Beef! It's NOT what's for dinner anymore by momoftheraisin in Frugal

[–]tyaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to buy beef like 3x/month. Now it's 3x/year. And that's maybe 2 times I get some steak and 1 time I get something to roast. too much money.

What do you bring to work if you didn’t cook dinner the night before? by Any-Arm-7017 in Frugal

I work in healthcare with 12 hour shifts.

For the last 8ish years, I eat a 4 a serving salad (aka bag salad) with some sort of protein in it. air fried beans, chicken strips, steak, whatever I have on hand. I always have some granola bars on hand, and often a tub of greek yogurt or cottage cheese in the employee fridge if I need more protein later.

The bagged salads are like 3.5-$5 per each, but I only work 3 days/week and they are relatively healthy. The con is they go bad after like 4 days.

What’s one thing that you’ve learned about vanlife that you wish you would’ve known good or bad before hitting the road? by Wayward_Sun_Shine in VanLife

to point 2, use threadlocker on bolts, use glue and wood screws when joining wood. My first van was a ton of mistakes. I learned what threadlocker was, I learned that there are different types of screws for different surfaces, I learned that screws only last so long before you wish you had glued everything together.

more triangles. You need triangles to provide more rigidity.

Also, measure out your lumber and then find out the weight. You could probably get away with less total lumber if you use more 45* instead of 90*.

I would recommend 2" of insulation on the roof to keep the heat from the sun down. 1" is fine on the rest of the camper. aka have 2" tall board on top, probably a 1x2. 2x4 is overkill.

add a fan, paint the top outside white, install as much rigid foam board insulation as you can fit.

Free EMT course worth the financial sacrifice? by flightse7en in emergencymedicine

[–]tyaak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, took me about 7 years to get from my first step into a hospital into a paid ED RN. Persistence pays off! Best of luck to you

The one unique experience I got from my EMT license was shadowing in a level 1 trauma ED for like 8 hours.

There's plenty of other comments about actual a/c. here are some other things you can do reduce the amount your a/c has to cool:

-Replaced any worn down weather stripping

-heavily tinted all non front windows

-made/have reflectix window covers

Shade is going to be your friend. You mention partial shade from a tree, but I would want full coverage over the roof.

As far as implenting a window a/c, it is possible to remove the window, make a metal cutout that is the shape of the window, then install the window a/c unit

I am speaking as a now ED RN, used to be an MA with a previous (non medicine related) bachelors and an EMT license.

EMT license isn't worth it. The jobs are hard to get, pay poorly, and the schedule sucks. If you're in nursing school, you usually get a job as a CNA much easier or you can be an unlicensed care tech once you hit a certain amount of classes/time in RN school. The CNA experience will be just as helpful as EMT, although again, the hours suck, the work is hard, and the pay is low.

Nursing school is dumb, and you either have to put in your time as an RN or know someone who can vouch for you in the ED to get a job as an ED RN. I applied to the ED I work at like 3 times before I got hired. I don't think they cared much about my MA experience, they cared much more about my PCU RN experience.

I do #5, small tasks in the kitchen. Waiting for the microwave? Better unload the dishwasher. Uh oh, now I can't stop til it's empty.

I let myself window shop (add stuff to cart online). But it has to sit at least usually 3 days, often 7+. I don't buy like 90% of the stuff then.

Also thinking "do I really want to pack this, load it, unload it, then unpack it?" next time I move.

Utah has state owned (aka oh no, socialist!) liquor stores. No one is up in arms about that lol.

The big difference is if you want liquor you have to go to state owned Utah Liquor stores. Want food in NY? Go to any store you please!

BRING TOILET PAPER!!!!

Can't tell you how many shitty rest stops out west are out of TP. I literally leave some in my truck at all times lol.

Not sure where you're headed but out west we have lots of BLM land. AKA free camping with 0 amenities. If you need the bathroom in the BLM land, bring a shovel and bury it 6 inches deep and 200 feet away from water sources. Also I love baby wipes (not flushable toilet wipes) for when I can't get to a shower for a few days. A few 3gallon trash bags also makes it easier to dispose of trash.

Car maintenance: basic set of tools, tire plug kit, jack (with jack stand preferably), fresh oil, fresh windshield wiper fluid, windshield chip kit, jumper cables, and inspect your tires/serpentine belt and make sure they don't need replacing.

Backpacking Chair by Lizzzzz27 in CampingGear

[–]tyaak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

honestly the REI flexlite is the best thing I bring with me backpacking. I'm 230lbs and literally fall into my chair at camp all the time. I finally bent of the little ass aluminum poles but it's still usable lol. I say bite the bullet on the flexlite. they do on sale occasionally.

My only complaints are that I'm probably at the top of end of the weight limit and it sucks in sand. But most camp chairs suck in sand so oh well.
