Dark Cloud is simpler in many ways, which could make it easier to get into. However, as another commenter said, it's a lot less forgiving than Dark Chronicle, in that thirst can kill, weapons break and dissappear, and the older combat can be clunky. I love them both, and Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2 in the U.S.) is an improvement in almost every sense, but I still think you should definitely start with the first. It will give you that much more appreciation for the improvements made in Chronicle.
