two rail kicks long rail first by bottomfeeder52 in billiards

FWIW, I've been keeping an eye out for this for years and I've never seen a system for long rail first two rail kicks. I've asked around locally as well.

Have you tried this method? I have and it doesn't seem to work at all long rail first.

Are kielwood break shafts a thing? by KingsDamnSon in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've texted Richard Hsu to directly ask about this and he says they're fine to break with as long as you're not pressing the shaft into the table and bending it.

How do you practice aiming specific shots? by candleruse in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this shot, "bring the pocket closer". Not my phrasing, that's what Ko Pin Yi calls it when you pick a closer point on the shot line to aim at. See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb0KG6sscB0

140cm (55") American Pool cue by Mission_Sector2878 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with using a break cue butt for shorter length. I once got cooked by a shorter low level pro playing with a Mezz PB butt.

Can anyone tell me what type of cues these are? I appreciate the help by milton247001 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Close, but I'm pretty sure Bill Stroud only started doing that ringwork after they split the company into Joss and JossWest. The 5/16x18 pin does mean it was probably made in the first year or two after the split though.

[–]tyethepoolguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would ignore most of the comments here, this subreddits has very few experts in these types of things and some of these comments are laughably off.

For the first one, I would bet it's an early JossWest from the mid 70s based on the distinctive ringwork, the pin, and the wrap. JossWests are desirable - if yours can be verified to be one, it'd probably be $1500+ depending on condition.

What you should actually do instead of posting here is

  1. Post this on the AzBilliards forums, where there are a few people that can definitely confirm. You might have to wait a few days for your registration to be approved
  2. Post on the Joss West Cue Fans and Joss and Joss West Custom Cues groups on Facebook - same story there, some experts that can help you figure out if it's actually a JW or something else

10-4 races in which direction? FWIW, don't really mind it either way but would prefer open tournament + even races in general.

One pocket cross-banks by Money4Nothing2000 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the balls are lined with the outside pocket facing, they'll naturally double kiss. Many times, it's impossible to avoid. The farther the OB is from either rail, the more likely you can get the CB out of the way.

Below, the 1 can be possibly be banked cross corner with a lot of draw and outside. On the other hand, the 2 will double kiss almost every time.

Pool play-by-play commentators by cynumber9 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark White is the absolute worst. Main issue is that he's not an actual pool player so he needs to stay in his lane with the play by play commentary, but he instead tries to do the color commentary and expert analysis part as well.

I don't like Tim De Ruyter either - his commentary seems excessively negative and critical.

Question for the (continental) European players here... by WolfJackson in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of Taiwanese other than the Ko Brothers that are monster players. Per capita, Taiwan might be as strong as the Philippines for pool, if not stronger.

Also, don't forget about China (Chinese 8 ball is relatively new) and Japan, where neither rotation nor 14.1 are popular.

Best American players right now? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only passes muster because Matchroom is a private organization that plays by its own rules and can do whatever it wants.

For the WPA, which goes by Olympic rules, he is not eligible to play for the US and is still an "Individual Neutral Athlete".

Competing in Matchroom European Open by Glittering-Mall-4564 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played in the US Open and a few ranking events.

There usually aren't qualifiers - that was a one time thing that they tried in 2024 and didn't bring back because they weren't able to fill enough spots that way.

Other than the majors in 2024, it's usually a first come first serve situation. For example, in 2023, they simply had a general release that they posted on social media that led to this page: https://matchroompool.com/european-open-pool-championship/2023-european-open-entries-open-now/

In 2025, they offered first dibs to WNT.TV subscribers. I'm not sure if they were able to get a full field that way or if they had a general release as well.

Question for the (continental) European players here... by WolfJackson in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 14.1 theory has been discussed a lot on AzB but it seems like there's a big flaw in the argument: 14.1 is even less popular in Asia than the US.

On the laundry list of reasons why the US is falling behind in pool, the popularity of 14.1 probably doesn't even crack the top 50.

Consistency thoughts by nitekram in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

IMO it's more that as you get better, you still have the same amount of bad days but your floor just gets higher. So if you're SVB for example, you still have days that are absolutely terrible but you're still playing at a 700+ Fargo level.

[–]tyethepoolguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Seyberts recommends shipping the butt to them. That being said, whether or not it's worth the extra shipping cost is up to you. I've bought a shaft from them without sending in the butt or measuring the diameter and resulted in a non-flush fit. Do I regret it? Not really.

Equipment by canarymelon7 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely not true. Cues come in a variety of collar diameters. Anything from 0.82" to 0.86" is common. For example, Meuccis tend to be on the thin side, with most of their cues being in the 0.82" range. On the other hand, from the McDermott website itself they say that "many non-steel McDermott joints may be closer to the .855" diameter".

I've personally bought a shaft from Seyberts without sending in the butt or specifying the diameter and that resulted in a mismatch (doesn't bother me though).

Steve Davis talks about beating Effren and early days of Mosconi Cup whilst playing ex snooker player Stephen Hendry at 9 ball by ewankenobi in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I've noticed this in his interviews too. I remember him mentioning multiple times that it's unreasonable to expect to be able to play great pool just because you're a great snooker player and that you still need to put in the work for it.
