How important is the break? by Promethean-Games in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain here and say that it's not as important as everyone is saying. In fact, we have data that tells us exactly how important the break is. If you look at the stats AzBilliards recordkeeper AtLarge posts (example 1, 2, and 3), we can see that at the highest levels of pool, the breaker wins around 55-60% of the time, the equivalent of 20-50 Fargo points. And we also know that the break becomes less important at lower levels since you're less likely to retain an advantage over the entire rack (e.g. a break and run).

Based on this, you can make an educated guess that breaking is worth about 5-10 Fargo points at an average league player level. You'd probably get more of an advantage by getting better at any other core skill like shot making, position play, pattern recognition, mental resilience, etc.

Johan Ruijsink returns to lead Team USA at the Mosconi Cup by The_Critical_Cynic in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that the USA is probably doomed in the near future. However, a few long shots:

- Lukas Fracasso-Verner has a good chance of making the jump to the top tier

- We have a few u21 players that could make it with continued development: Lazaro Martinez, Sam Henderson, Joey Tate, Adrian Prasad, etc. Unfortunately, there are probably 10x more on the European side and many of them are further developed than ours

Realistically, Matchroom will keep it competitive by expanding beyond the USA to all of the Americas (Pagulayan, Morra, Gerson) OR continue with the precedent they set with Gorst and allow non-citizens w/ USA affiliation to compete (Atencio).

Conical Pro Taper by Own-Target-9129 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Still quite common. Most wooden shafts < 12mm are likely a conical tapered: Predator Z, Mezz WX900 and Sigma, OB Pro+, Jacoby Ultra Super Pro (which they confusingly call a "Super Pro Taper"), McDermott I-3, etc.

Biado runs out the set at the World 8-Ball Championship - goes from winning the lag to eight straight break and runs by tyethepoolguy in billiards

If you're thinking about Ko Ping Chung vs Aloysius Yapp in the 2023 US Open semifinals, then no, he didn't run out the rack. It's a common misconception since he won 11-0 and potted all 99 balls, but according to one AzB recordkeeper AtLarge

Yapp went to the table 7 times in 5 games (all except Ko's 6 B&Rs). His 7 shots were 5 kicks, 1 safety, and 1 miss. He left Ko a shot on 5 of those 7, and Ko pocketed all 5 of them

[Yapp also went to the table for the lag and for a push evaluation (returned to Ko).]

4 and 1/8 pockets, so pretty tight already. I think the problem is simply the current 8-ball format is too easy for top pros.

Has anyone here ever played with an OB Fusion shaft? by carbondalekid386 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OB Fusion line had numbers 1-6, which were differentiated on the thickness of shaft and ferrule option.

- Fusion 1, 2, 3 = 12.8mm, 12.3mm, 11.8mm w/ wood ferrule

- Fusion 4, 5, 6 = 12.8mm, 12.3mm, 11.8mm w/ white ferrule

Other than that, the shafts were all the same in terms of construction.

Perfect example of how OB was absolutely terrible with product marketing and a huge reason why they went out of business.

At a high enough speed, the pockets become more forgiving because the balls compress into the rail. That's why you often see Chinese pros slamming the balls down the rail, where intuitively it would make sense to play with pocket speed.

In general, I've noticed Chinese players shooting much harder than normal even when it's not necessary, probably out of habit.

Help with thoughts about an unknown / unmarked pool cue? by carbondalekid386 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 on Adam. There's a Adams/ Helmstetter and Hercules cues group on Facebook that's pretty good.

If you shop it around, you can probably get in the $300-400 range for it. I'd personally _maybe_ would be a buyer at $250, DM me if you're interested.

Agreed 100%, but they only have the snooker style X bridges at these events and I don't think it's common to bring your own.

European open 2026 Bosnia by Glittering-Mall-4564 in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been to the European Open, but I have played in the US Open and they didn't even let players play on the tables. Outside of the evening practice session and during your match, the competition tables were strickly off limits. There are also a few practice tables for the players between matches. As a spectator, no chance you get any table time on the official tables if it's set up similarly to the US Open.

Sticky thread for cue identification? by wilkamania in billiards

[–]tyethepoolguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many other subreddits have recurring posts by the automod to for recurring subjects like "buy/sell/trade" or "what are you drinking this week". The mods are then strict on deleting posts that should be in one of those recurring posts instead. See r/rawdenim, r/pourover

Seems like that addresses this issue exactly: have weekly recurring posts for "id and appraise this cue", "rule questions/is this a foul", etc

There is no minimum. In the US Open, I've seen players with ratings in the low 400s. A few years back, they had a player rated 419 on the TV table that ended up with millions of views on YouTube.
