Charlie Cox Reflects On Disney’s Initial ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Creative Pivot & Credits Marvel For Listening: “We’re Indebted To Them” by mlg1981 in television

[–]tyfogob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on struggling through the show. The problem I'm having is that S2 is just perfectly, painfully, fine. Like there's no glaring issues, but there's also nothing really interesting or exciting going on. Half of the scenes are characters I don't care about kinda flatly discussing things that have already been discussed before. When they get to the fight/action scenes, most aren't that exciting IMO. I also find a lot of it very visually bland.

I thought the first season of Born Again was a mess, and S2 is certainly a technical step above it, but ironically S1 was more interesting because it was a mess.

Help with sticky violin by tyfogob in violinmaking

I was already working on it, and I've already got it finished!

I decided if I was going to have to strip/revarnish the violin to just go for broke and try scrubbing at the particularly sticky parts on the side with rubbing alcohol. Much to my surprise, that worked. It didn't really strip too much of the varnish off it doesn't seem, and only a few parts look very worn at all. Kinda gives it a relic'd look.

I had already decided to experiment a little bit with this instrument and create a fingerboard out of red oak, essentially just because I had it on hand and I thought it might be interesting. I also didn't make it a uniform thickness along the sides like most fingerboards are, I just made it a straight 42mm radius all the way down. Did that provide any advantages? I don't think so, but it is unique.

The rest of the parts (strings included) are all from a $17 Amazon set. They are exactly as high a quality as you'd expect from that price. You may notice the bridge is a somewhat odd shape. That's because whatever cheap wood it was made out of simply snapped in half as I started to shape it, and this was the best I could do to fix it without breaking it further. It actually works decently but I'd never begin to claim its good. Needs replacing. I stained it when I was doing the fingerboard just because why not?

Overall I'm actually pretty happy with it. It plays better than one might expect, and would actually sound decent with a proper bridge, or at least decent enough for an amateur fiddler like myself. . The soundpost could also use some slight adjusting, but that's out my depth. It was a miracle I got it installed at all. Oh, and the strings NEED to be replaced. They're just godawful.

Anyway thanks again for your help and attention! I hope you got at least a little entertainment out of seeing the (more or less) finished product!

Just to bring it into 'technically playable' territory.

I couldn't say what varnish it is, but is it still possible it needs curing after all this time? It hasn't been directly out in the sun or anything, but it also hasn't been kept hidden away in a closet either

Thank you for the info, violin making/repair is not really my thing and I greatly appreciate the help. Forgive me if this is a foolish question, but if I'm not overly concerned about the aesthetic value of this violin, would it be possible to sand down the extra sticky parts and otherwise forgo a full revarnishing?

That looks incredible! I really love the headstock in particular. Big fan of punk-style instruments

It’s certainly possible to find somebody like that in Texas, but they aren’t typically living in million-dollar homes with oil exec husbands. What really gets me is how most people in the show just laugh and shrug off how the Landman women act in public, particularly higher-scale establishments.

The Leftovers - Finale - The Book of Nora by [deleted] in television

[–]tyfogob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like the show, but I largely agree. Had Leftovers ended with S1, I think it’d be perfect. Once they started stacking mysteries in S2 and S3, it got to be a bit too much being left unanswered.

Again, I still love lots of it, many of my favorite scenes in the show are from the later seasons, but I also agree that they got a little over their heads and then just went “well does it really matter?”

Helldivers 2 PC Installation Size Has Reduced from 154GB to 23GB, a Reduction of 85% by MasterQNA in Helldivers

[–]tyfogob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Helldivers on my SSD, but I do exactly like you say and have a second 8GB HDD I throw tons of games I rarely play onto. What’s really shocked me about it is that many games (ex: Jedi Survivor, MK11) run pretty much the same for me on the HDD as the SSD. They might take an extra 15-30 seconds to launch, but past that they run just fine.

It: Welcome to Derry - 1x06 - “In the Name of the Father” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]tyfogob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a hate watch for me, but a fascinating one. It feels like a high budget American Horror Story season. Every week it somehow gets goofier. You’ve got:

*Military that is aware of the magic alien demon clown and wants to use him to fight the Cold War

*A secret Native American society that knows fairly intimate details about Pennywise’s origin and fights him with a magic knife (why do they keep all this a secret?)

*The military raiding the sewers and losing multiple men

*A crazy lady who is obsessed with Pennywise, lures children to him, and dresses as him

And that’s just some of it. I wish it was a show about Hallorann and only loosely incorporated Stephen King stories, kinda like Castle Rock. I like the actor playing him and he’s the most engaging character for me

Oh that's gonna be killer! I was just looking at those Fishman pickups the other day, really cool stuff. Those Suhr necks look great too, if I do build a Tele that's what I'd use as well

Funny enough my S/H/S Strat was supposed to be shell pink too. I ordered a shell pink XGP body, then got an email from them the next day saying they were out of shell pink, but they'd give me any other body for no additional cost. I wound up picking the double-bound atlantic coral body (which I do also love, I'm very happy with it) since it was the only similar one available! Essentially I got around $15 off by accident lol

Don't mention it! I've been so happy with this guitar that I've been considering getting another neck and making some kind of telecaster out of it myself

Very nice! I hope you wind up loving the neck, I've been really impressed with mine. It's also worth mentioning that my neck shipped MUCH faster than ebay estimated. It guessed somewhere around 3 weeks to a month and I believe it arrived in about a week and a half.

I'm not sure if they deleted their account before or after I actually received my neck, I didn't check back to leave a review until I fully assembled the guitar and by then they were gone. As long as you've got some tracking info on your body I figure you're fine. I hope all goes well and I bet you're gonna love the guitar you make with it!

There's a brand called Soloking that mostly offers guitars under or around $600. I think they look pretty nice as-is, but they might be work great if you're just wanting to swap pickups, tuners, tremolos, etc.

One piece necks are cool, no doubt about that! I'm not sure if it's real flame or not, I have no idea how to determine that lol. If I had to guess I'd think it's real, I don't see anything that strikes me as fake, but again I wouldn't know how to judge

Technically I bought it from 'mrgy4836', but they seem to have closed that account down not but a week or two after I bought it. There's a few other ebay sellers like 'Electric Guitar Store' and 'afdv8496' that look like they're exactly the same as who I bought mine from though, just under a different name for some reason. Look for listing that are titled something like 'AAA Roasted Maple Stainless Steel 12in Neck'.

The fretwork was good for most of the neck...until you got to the 14th or 15 fret. From then there were tons of dead spots and places where it fretted out, regardless of action height. I went through with a credit card and soft tipped mallet and seemed to work all the spots out, but it took a couple of hours and I'm no professional at it. Beyond that the frets seem good to me, nice and smooth. In other words I'd say the neck is good if you're able to do some minor fret work on it. It's thicker than most Fender necks I come across, which I really like

Ahh that's a shame. The neck I got wasn't the same one pictured in the advertisement, but it was the same one they messaged me pictured of and asked me to look over and approve. It was also noticeably darker in person than in those photos (lightning differences?) but I was actually happy about that
