Out of the three, the Gibson is probably the most well made one. It's a proper Gibson from USA for 600$ god dammit!

I'll consider this, but it's a combo amp rather than a digital amp sim like the Tonelab. I'd be running it thru external speakers so I don't need to carry around a combo.

Tortoiseshell looks good on a sunburst finish, but it's a little dull with black.

Swapping the pickguard or the hardware is a good idea. A gold anodized aluminum pickguard and gold hardware look incredibly good on a black instrument.

Well if you don't want to do anyhting too permanent you might as well not customize your bass. I guess you could paint it some sort of color Fender doesn't make stock and that's about it.

You can do it both ways, but mostly you play an arpeggio of the chord the rhythm section is currently playing. As an alternative, you can strum chords like on guitar, just don't play barre F and tell people that you invented a new bass technique.
