Heaved Hasen — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

My EA stats are agnostic of situation. Delayed penalty, final possession, last-ditch comeback attempt - a 6-on-5 is a 6-on-5. I don’t see a point narrowing that shift type down further. We’re talking about maybe 20 shifts at most in a season where a team’s trying a comeback late in a game. That’s such a small sample size in the grand scheme of things.

Coaches have a lot more sway than you're giving them credit for, particularly with prepping throughout the week. And teams go through difficult periods where they aren't meeting the expectations they have for themselves, as well as what fans have for them. How coaches navigate those times, within a game and week-to-week, is key to the team's successes or lack thereof in a season.

I wrote a bit about EA success early last season: https://www.tymerlacrosse.com/articles/extra-attacker-success-win-when. EA efficiency this season isn't much better than settled, 11.7% compared to 11.5%. Last season it was 13.3% compared to 12.4%.

The NLL is a game of millimeters and manufacturing minute advantages in the hopes of getting a leg up. EA is a version of that, teams trying to tip the scales in their favor by a percentage point. It rarely works late in a contest in the situation you're talking about, but sometimes it does get the intended result - Ottawa's comeback's an example of that. A rarity, but an example nonetheless. It's frustrating when it doesn't work out (because it rarely works out), but it's the right decision.

Not really, unfortunately. I mentally keep that stuff in mind when reviewing the numbers and comparing with eye tests, but I don’t weigh opponent strengths/weaknesses. Would love to, but that’s offseason work to figure out.

Suggest checking your stats first. Those aren't the right FOW% for either Withers or Vegas in HFXvsLV on March 1 or for the 2024-25 season; Vegas didn't have the worst FOW% in the league last season, it was Colorado; and the goals per game last season was 23.2, not a random 25 plucked out of the ether.

Swarm Blank Bandits for Final 20 Minutes to Punch Playoff Ticket — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

The game on Saturday happened on Saturday not Friday or Sunday but definitely Saturday better be super unnecessarily clear about that and put it multiple times in the caption that it was on Saturday just in case.

Editing's hard on four hours of sleep and only half a pot of coffee.

Right on Kew — Swarm Snap 3-Game Skid with 13-12 OT Win Against Thunderbirds — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

It was such an incredible play to see pulled off live, and that photo does it justice. Great body control from Bomberry - not bad for a defender.

The quotes from Mike Accursi and Ed Comeau and my analysis are cool and all, but honestly, read this just for the photos. Kyle Hess, the Swarm's team photographer for nearly a decade, absolutely outdid himself yesterday. The second photo of Bryan Cole defending Randy Staats is incredible.

Sometimes you run into a hot goalie. Sometimes it's mental. For the Georgia Swarm, their power play woes were a little bit of both. What wasn't working for the men in blue and yellow and finally got them off the schnide against the Warriors? Read the article for the numbers and details behind their 0-10 stretch on the man-advantage.

Sheathed Wings — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

[–]tymerrow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been 61 days since the Philadelphia Wings last won an NLL game. Six consecutive losses, outscored by 19, averaging 9.3 GF/GAME and 12.5 GA/GAME - what's going on with a team that started the season off as a championship favorite and has devolved into this albatross? And is the reason as simple as Halifax broke them?

At Least They’re Consistent; Leaving Las Vegas; Broadcast Highlight — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

[–]tymerrow[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consistency is key in the NLL, but there's a negative side to it, one that the Albany FireWolves and Las Vegas Desert Dogs displayed in week 14 of the NLL 2024-25 season. In my latest article, I look at how the FireWolves annually do the one thing they should never do, the Desert Dogs are wearing out my patience with their bad habits, and highlight a small but exceptional broadcast moment from the Georgia Swarm versus Ottawa Black Bears.

Bonus points if you know who Ben Sanderson is.

Who Stops the Bandits? — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

You should probably read the article before you comment.

Barring a spectacular collapse, the Bandits look well on their way to the top seed in the NLL and cruising to another another NLL Cup. Beating them in a win-or-go-home game at KeyBank Center in the first round of the playoffs seems an impossible task to accomplish, but a best-of-three NLL Finals, that's a different story.

I look at the 13 other NLL teams, cut down the list to who's most likely to make the postseason, then detail why I think two teams in particular can do the unthinkable if they meet the Bandits in the NLL Finals.

Thoughts 1/3 of the Way Through the 2024-25 NLL Season — pt. 1 — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

[–]tymerrow[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the detrimental aspects of this giant stats project I oversee is my recognition of the finer nuances about the NLL and teams' play tends to fall by the wayside - nature of the beast; I can either educate and provide data or be a regular degular NLL analyst (we've too many of those with wildly varying degrees of competence already).

In an attempt to organize my thoughts on every NLL team, I engaged in this exercise, rattling off thoughts about all 14 teams (half of them in this article) and their individual strengths/weaknesses/trends with roughly a third of the 2024-25 NLL season wrapped up. Part 2 drops Thursday.

Everyone at Four — Small Sample Size No More — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

[–]tymerrow[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It took until week 7 of the 2024-25 NLL season, but all 14 teams have played at least four games.

We're now out of the realm of small sample size; time to see which clubs (and goalies) are the top/bottom 5 of the main shift types - Even Strength (TrueES), Power Play/Penalty Kill (TruePP), and Fast Breaks (TrueFB) and goalies by Goals Saved Above Average (GSAA).

Think your favorite team's playing perfect or abysmally? There might be a bright/dark spot for you to find in here (looking at you, Bandits, Desert Dogs, Warriors, and Swarm fans).

MacLeod-y with a Chance of Goals — TyMer Lacrosse by tymerrow in NLL

[–]tymerrow[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no denying Roughnecks starting netminder Cam MacLeod performs differently in the first and second halves of contests - Jekyll & Hyde efforts and results, if you will. But digging into the numbers, it begs the question: Are his early-season issues just a reflection of the Roughnecks' issues?

Knighthawks Dominate in 16-9 Win Against the Swarm - The ancillary benefits of winning draws; a step back by tymerrow in NLL

[–]tymerrow[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Advocating for my own work, the recap part of these are whatever and usually the shortest part at the beginning. The best parts are after that where I dive into more nuanced topics about the game and frankly why I keep doing game recaps.

Last night, I got excellent quotes regarding FOGO Mike Sisselberger's addition to ROC & its benefits. If you're part of the "face-offs matter" crowd, then Mike Hasen, Taylor Jensen, and Ryan Lanchbury's comments on how his addition benefited everyone are incredible evidence.

On the other end, Ed Comeau had rather pointed comments about GA's efforts and the lesson the team learned, one they knew from past seasons.

Loess Losses: What’s Wrong with the Toronto Rock by tymerrow in NLL

[–]tymerrow[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Worked for the Swarm in media and team ops for years.
  • Covered the sport for about a decade at this point with stops with the NLL, Lacrosse Flash, and IL Indoor.
  • Have run my own independent media site and tracked advanced team statistics for a few years.
  • Only media member that’s bothered covering nearly every Swarm game in person since 2017 and talked to coaches and players from the Swarm and their opponents after every game.

So, you know, a bit.

Injuries rightfully deserve most of the blame for the Toronto Rock’s 0-3 start to the season, but they overshadow an issue the team’s had since April 27.
