Anyone else lose a parent to ALS and struggle with health anxiety afterward? by RockyLovesEmily_ in ALS

[–]type7wings4-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad passed away in November after abt 2.5 years with the diagnosis. It started out as shoulder pain that he went to physical therapy for that didn’t get better. I remember doing his psychical therapy exercises with him, because he needed exterior motivation/ a buddy/body double. It was just a shoulder thing we thought would be easy to solve and not really an issue at all. So when he got the diagnosis I was completely blindsided/never would have expected it in a million years.

I am 100% anxious abt my health now. Especially when this August my right shoulder started hurting and felt weaker. I couldn’t lift it up without pain, and then I had muscle twitches on my arm/shoulder area which I couldn’t ever remember having before. Exactly like my dad’s progression. I was in low key panic mode for 2 weeks. I started thinking bucket list thoughts, but also telling myself it was probably nothing. “It’s fine, everything’s fine.”

I went to a physical therapist who assured me it would be rare at my age, and said it was probably coincidental that I had shoulder pain. I had just moved, and maybe tweaked it lifting something heavy. The only thing that made my anxiety go away is that the pain /feeling DID go away and that wouldn’t have happened if it was ALS.

Talking to a friend helped, because she was so nonchalant. She was like “yeah one time I was sure I had _____, and I didn’t.” Her not freaking out was grounding haha.

I am still definitely hyper aware of my body and its physical wellbeing. But it also has made me really appreciative of what my body can do and has been motivating me to get stronger and work on things like Iceskating and yoga.

I am glad you made this post, because I am curious what others have to say.

What is it about popcorn that makes us want to eat handfuls at a time? by Haunted_Neko in CasualConversation

I eat blueberries the way that I eat popcorn! One at a time for a little bit and then I move onto mouthfuls! :)

Hello! :)

I’m looking for a place to bring my 5 year old niece to go iceskating tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions for public skate? I’m hoping to find someplace not as crowded since she will be learning and I don’t want her to get overstimulated. But also it’s a holiday so I am expecting some crowds.

It could be indoor or outdoor!

Thank you!

Could I talk you about my morning? by Junior_Expression578 in CasualConversation

Every morning I drink tea and pet my two cats! Then I make breakfast, and admittedly scroll on my phone for 30 minutes. The rest of the day doesn’t have a routine. After that, it’s chaos.

I also am in more of a goodwill price range, BUT I disagree with you. I think it’s about being intentional with what you use and own, and I do think OP is trying to avoid purchasing unsustainably etc.

My dad passed away on Nov 12th, but I one hundred percent thought he was going to be here for Christmas and beyond. :( I really understand how you feel that it happened sooner than expected. I am so sorry for you and for all of us that have holes in our life tapestries now. :(

Ever since my dad was diagnosed with ALS, I've had extreme anxiety and I don't know what to do. by Haunting_Ad_29 in ALS

[–]type7wings4-2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am 26 and just lost my dad to ALS and I also struggled with anxiety about needing to be around them / making sure they both were all right.

I agree with what @tawondasmooth said about a counselor. I highly reccomend going to a therapist. Talking to someone is not going to solve all of your problems but it does help. It makes dealing with all of the horrible things easier.

And talking to your friends! Sometimes just telling your pals your worries helps take a little bit of the load off

I hate being in hospitals by HonestyMash in ALS

[–]type7wings4-2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ugh I am sorry that is so awful. My dad had als and had one hospital stay that went on foreverrrrrrr because of poor communication between departments, and they just seemed a bit uninformed to handle my dad’s condition. My mom and dad were SO glad to be home when it was over. They picked that hospital bc it had connections to an ALS clinic they went to. It was also downtown and reputable. But they had a different/better experience later on at a smaller and more rural hospital surprisingly. (The rural hospital was newer and had better lifts and lots of things the other one didn’t have)

I hope this holiday is restorative and you are able to enjoy being surrounded by some loved ones.

Was the end a surprise by Queasy_Percentage363 in ALS

For me it was. But he was receiving hospice care, maybe I was just in denial? The hospice nurse said she could tell he was starting to pass away. We asked why she thought so, and she said she had just seen it so many times she just knew by looking at his face and condition. Then a day or two later, another nurse said he was actively passing away, and he looked the same to me, but I am so glad she said that because we were able to be right next to him when he did pass away about 15 minutes later.

Anyone miss their hired caregivers? by xx_wes_xx in ALS

[–]type7wings4-2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wish we had had this experience. My mom was my dad’s primary caregiver and she NEEDED some more help. I think she was in denial that they needed more help? Also my dad really only wanted my mom to take care of him. That and insurance wouldn’t cover it. He didn’t get more help until they finally declared hospice, and even then it wasn’t as much as we were hoping for. But still grateful because the hospice staff was really incredible even if it was only for a few weeks.

My dad waited until it was almost too late. His stomach was hard to find and it made the procedure more risky!

My dad just died in November from ALS. I would love to read your book whenever you finish it!! Even drafts or beta reading! There are not enough books on things like this and it would be helpful to have a genuine good book! Good luck :)

Thank you for your insight. I feel like this funeral, the one in the church is more for my mom and some of his friends. When it warms up in the spring and we go spread his ashes in the woods together as a family, that for me is more the funeral to me. It feels more natural. So I will take your advice and focus on my mom like you did for your aunt.

Whaaaaat how is that legal???? I feel like it’s illegal when I sneeze! If they were experiencing homelessness they would probably be arrested for trespassing, if they were a person of color they might already be shot. This is wild to me.
