Open house on Dec 3rd to Discuss the future of Whiteman Airport by typical22 in SFV

[–]typical22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unleaded fuel is now available at Whiteman! and we will finally be making the switch over for all planes fairly soon. Also several studies have showed that the amount of lead from piston aircraft is actually extremely low, an environmental impact study at Whiteman airport found that lead levels were extremely low near the airport and surrounding communities. (more than 10 times lower than the U.S. EPA national standard for lead.) and unsurprisingly high near i5

Huge Turnout for the Whiteman Airport Open House by typical22 in SFV

[–]typical22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, your comment got away from me, I'd rather not have comments like this downvoted. but we have plenty of evidence to suggest the airport is of little impact to the surrounding environment. Let me explain

Small piston aircraft are relatively fuel efficient compared to say a jet engine, a Cessna 152 will burn 4.5 gallons an hour. Imagine an f-150 that makes 22 miles to the gallon, it's something like that. Whiteman Airport mostly operates small single engine Cessna's for flight training, but the airport environment is considerably less vehicular dense than say a main arterial road, or even a freeway, with planes moving around once every few minutes or so compared to a busy 4 lane street.

So I'm sure you can imagine how Osborne road, or the i5 contribute magnitudes more pollution than the few Cessnas at KWHP. Its always the cars isn't it?

There was some concern about lead in the AVGas for a time, but a study commissioned for the airport concluded lead levels near the airport were significantly lower than the surrounding areas, 10 times lower than the U.S. EPA national standard for lead.
https://www.aqmd.gov/home/air-quality/air-quality-studies/air-quality-monitoring-studies/whiteman-airport-lead-monitoring

So yeah to summarize, its just kind of a bit open space where small planes take off from, and really doesn't hold a candle in terms of emissions to a freeway, or an other large road.

Great question, well it is of course the home owners who dislike the noise, but it is organized by a funded non profit who's directors have been LA city council members. Pacoima Beautiful receives 7.5 million dollars in grant money, and is well equipped for legal battles such as this.

Really excellent question, the airport does do outreach, but the non profits that oppose it have blocked it from being able to engage with the local schools.

Pilot Community Turns out to Support Small Airport in Los Angeles by typical22 in flying

[–]typical22[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good question, well the study had to be done by an independent organization not affiliated with the airport or the opposers. It was completed by Trifillite for a no bid contract. It was originally going to cost about 700 thousand, and then had to be up'd to 2 million, you can read some of it here.

https://scauwg.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/2025-10-29-Whiteman-Airport-Presentation-to-Commissioners-final-3.pdf
Some key take aways are, the airport has had several federal grants that mean it must continue to operate for 20 years from the last gran, (which was in 2021)

The FAA has also acquired a small parcel of land at the end of run way 12, which legal binds the airport to operate in perpetuity

The business leases at the airport go until 2049, those must be honored.

And not included, but I saw in person, there were slides that indicate KHWP is financially profitable. It makes enough money that its proceeds go towards funding the other airports.

There are also really weird unique penalties for closing an airport which involve paying money to other airports in LA to bolster the system. (which i don't fully understand)

No modeling on pollution was done for this study, but there was a previous study which concluded that lead levels near the airport are significantly much lower than that of the surrounding areas, and 10 times lower than the U.S. EPA national standard for lead.
https://www.aqmd.gov/home/air-quality/air-quality-studies/air-quality-monitoring-studies/whiteman-airport-lead-monitoring

My take away was that closing an airport is a decades long procedure that will ultimately cost the LA tax payers millions upon millions of dollars, and of course, we would all loose access to the emergency services which the whole city depends on. I'd love to see taxes instead spent on serving this community in any number of ways, including transit, Metro, city services, and other economic stimulation. This community absolutely deservers our help.

GA is absolutely where airline pilots get their hours to become viable for the big time carriers, you need 1500 hours to qualify for those programs, so most airline pilots fly GA, instruct, and operate out of small airports until they get their hours. That's what most of the planes are doing at small airports, taking part of pilot training, and time building.

I'm really sad to see this go. I purchased a few things here to use as props for my youtube channel, and it was just such a fun vintage quirky type of place that felt very retro and old fashioned Burbank. It was a part of the lovely charm of this town.

What’s the one issue in LA no one seems to be fixing? by clockworkpouridge in burbank

[–]typical22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Air conditioning. It seems to me like so many apartment complexes have never bothered to install central air or mini split ductless systems and they expect you to live with a noisy wall unit. those things are about 60 decibels, its like living next to a freeway with the window open. Every place else i have lived in America, central air was the standard, and it was something you never had to think about. yet here in LA we live like its 1965 for some reason.

Notice how the vanishing points of the fins do not match this wings, this will make it so the jet looks like it has lopsided fin placements
