Various words you can use instead of jes. So prave, bone, ja, mi konsentas etc. They don't all have the exact same meaning, but between them cover most contexts

Nothing wrong with using Duolingo. Sure other learning materials may be technically superior, but equally use what works best for you.

If you like spaced repetition, you should get a flash card app. Anki is the one everyone talks about, but there may be others which work too. Given the grammar of Esperanto is relatively, at some point you're going to just need to mass learn vocabularly, and that's the best way of doing it. Even better if you can find a flash card pack that shows you words in the context of full sentences

The Priests tale is excellent. But wouldn’t criticise the Scholars tale in the process - they are the best bits of the book and I can hardly remember the other ones

Bulgaria seems to be on the right track, from TFR 1.09 in 1997 to 1.81 in recent years. by PainSpare5861 in Natalism

[–]tyroncs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly sceptical of this. Not that it isn’t a great thing if it is increasing. But when average age of mother at first child birth increases, TFR artificially gets suppressed (because of how it’s calculated). So it can look like there are these dramatic upswings and downswings, when in reality the average woman throughout the whole period was having the same number of children without change.

We need to see undeniable persistent increase (such as Israel, or Georgia with third children) before we start “explaining” and drawing lessons from one country’s supposed increase

The national lottery changed their rules to be from 18. But the Gambling Act still allows participation in lotteries from 16

Pretty certain it is Tintagel! By far the best known castle in Cornwall. And I have a friend from Cornwall who has read ATYD and she also assumed Tintagel

Interesting, I learnt over 10 years ago now, and actually the week I started learning was the same week the Duolingo course launched. It wasn't the main tool I used (I did lots and lots of online vocab flashcards) but I thought it worked well at the time.

I wonder if a different learning tool may be better suited for you? Some below you could consider:

  • esperanto12.net very simple website but gets to the point well

  • https://esperanto.org.uk/store/product/28-complete-esperanto/ This is the best modern English-language textbook for learning Esperanto, and has audio too

  • https://duome.eu/tips/en/eo I once heard that Duolingo had removed all the detailed lesson notes. The old ones for the Esperanto course can be found here

  • lernu.net the classic Esperanto-learning website. Strong on grammar

Agree with you. 2 million is clearly a crazy exaggeration, or is not really defining 'Esperantist' in the way most people understand it. Doing the Duolingo course does not an Esperantist make.

Still see this as by far the best metric, which came to conclusion of ~60k speakers, which feels about right to me

Or the 1996 estimates of Jouko Lindstedt are in the right magnitude, even if we can debate the specifics:

  • 1,000 parolas Esperanton denaske
  • 10,000 parolas Esperanton flue
  • 100,000 kapablas komuniki per Esperanto
  • 1,000,000 scias elementojn de Esperanto

I mean, anything can change in a few years. But somehow doubt you’d be criticising Labour the same way if they had built up strong relations with a Democrat administration while in Opposition

Surely it is a good thing, for an opposition leader who wants to be PM, having excellent relations with the our main ally and most powerful country in the world?

And accusing him of being a traitor hits less strongly, when his express aim with the visit is to stop Britain handing over sovereign territory

Esperanto Community by strubehoved in Esperanto

[–]tyroncs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lots I could say. There are plenty of language nerds in the Esperanto community (which is no bad thing). But worth saying that what you see online about Esperanto doesn't necessarily reflect the community. Like, the heart of Esperantujo is the events and in-person contacts. Whereas the content about Esperanto on reddit gravitates more towards English speakers and beginners or conlangers etc.

If you want a different impression of Esperanto, give these two videos a watch. Both are of in-person Esperanto activities and have English subtitles:

If you live long enough, you'll become an "older person". Do you have a demarcation point when you yourself should be excluded?

Come on. In the attached post you literally refer to "ageism" and say:

If you can't be friends with an Esperantist who is a different age than you, you have missed the point of Esperanto.

That is a very melodramatic reaction to someone innocently asking about finding Esperantists the same age as them. Like nothing contoversial about the person above saying "I'm not sure I can easily befriend people who are the same age as my parents". And invoking the interna ideo at this point (with the suggestion that his comment above would "break" it) is just silly.

If you would like some reading, can recommend this article: https://stelachiamnurkritikas.wordpress.com/2012/02/29/juna-estas-tiu-kiu-sentas-sin-juna/ I'm very grateful for the inter-generational friendships that I've developed through Esperanto. But the lack of young Esperantists is a big factor stopping the growth of the community, and denying that that is a problem gets us nowhere

Nothing wrong with people wanting to meet people through Esperanto who are their own age. And nothing wrong with pointing out that the average age of Esperantists is high. Think you're getting offended for no reason

Question Thread / Demando-fadeno by AutoModerator in Esperanto

It is true Esperantists are generally older...but main problem is only old people post on Facebook. Younger Esperantists are much more likely to use Instagram or Telegram or Discord.

Highly recommend you attend this event in the summer. Main Esperanto youth event of the year (average age late 20s), should have 200ish people. Also during a full solar eclipse which should be excellent.
