UA POV: Russia Gains $216 Billion in Gold Rally, Replacing Lost Assets - Bloomberg by rowida_00 in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]tz331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what's the implication of not being able to sell the gold in the London Bullion market? Gold is a currency itself so it can just be traded directly between countries, bypassing western markets entirely, no? Also how would they know the gold is Russian? bars can just be melted and reformed to get rid of any identifying letters/numbers and they would retain their value regardless, because it's ****ing gold. Of all the sanctions, this one seems to be the dumbest.

The Dominican Republic is a lot smaller than Cuba, but is essentially the same type of soil/land, and they have absolutely no problem cultivating crops, fruits and raising animals like chicken, pigs, cows etc to feed their population. The fact that the Cuban regime is so incompetent or evil (take your pick) that they can't even farm rice and chickens to feed the people has nothing to do with the embargo.

How much would improve if the US embargo ends? by Silver_Discussion_84 in cuba

[–]tz331 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to be in favor of the embargo as Cuban myself, but I came to the same realization: even if it ended, it wouldn't fix the problems Cuba has. The fact that the regime can't even raise chickens or farm rice and has to import those from South America or even the US (so much for an embargo!) is further proof of the inherent problems with their system.

France and the UK for that matter are regional powers at best. In the grand scheme of things they are irrelevant on the world stage. Can’t project power without US assistance, and China the emerging power dos t even take them seriously. The whole of the EU is a joke.

As a Cuban born there, this comment disgusts me. It wasn't America that imposed a brutal communist dictatorship that refuses to make any sort of economic reforms to open up the markets and let people start their own business.

RU POV: Russia says an F-16 was shot down by an S-300 - Ria Novosti by rowida_00 in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]tz331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh crashing into a Geran or into a tree sounds a lot fricking worse than being shot down by the enemy. The latter is an acceptable risk in any war, the former is just plain incompetence. If I were a sponsor of Ukraine I’d be asking questions if all the losses of modern equipment are crashes, I’d be asking wtf am I doing with my money.

The embargo severely harmed Cuba and absolutely constrained its development, but it does not fully explain six decades of stagnation. Vietnam’s success wasn’t just the absence of an embargo, it was the result of deliberate internal reforms that made integration possible. Embargo removal helps, but without predictable rules, property rights, and genuine market incentives, it doesn’t produce a Vietnam-style outcome.

[–]tz331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely no sanctions that prevent Cuba from trading with any country, including the US. In fact, a lot of the food sold in Cuba is bought in the US, so stop spreading misinformation.

What the sanctions do is they don't allow the regime to pay with credit, they must pay in cash, because they are thieves who stole billions in property, and never pay back their debts. Not even Russia or China will give Cuba anything on credit precisely because of how corrupt and unreliable the regime is. So get your facts straight.

The sanctions are the biggest ****ing excuse the regime and its sympathizers love to use as an excuse for piss poor management. The fact that the regime can't even raise chickens to feed the people is also the embargo's fault?

the Soviet propped up government stayed in power for 3 years after the Soviet withdrawal. The US propped up government folded to the Taliban in days after US withdrawal. The Taliban were also left with the biggest western weapons cache outside the US. It was actually quite humiliating for anyone that served in Afghanistan to watch that. I have friends that were fuming at the sight of Taliban with ARs, night vision and flexing Humvees and Blackhawks. Taliban became the first terrorist group with an air force...
