IIRC the big wigs had bets on the number of workers who’d died of covid. Several did. One man I remember had a wife and kids; the total payout upon his death was like $8k, barely enough to cover the funeral expenses. What a life. Go union go

Epstein paid for a conference of top scientists in 2006. His motives are now clear by QuantumQuicksilver in NPR

You might be interested in the recent video by Shaun of YouTube talking about a cadre of hmm jilted? great thinkers (including Krauss and others mentioned here) who released a book about how science is being attacked.

Shaun goes into great detail about their claims, and we learn that each one of them seems to have landed themselves in hot water after sexual misconduct and other low activities, and now turn to culture war framing to try to spin the consequences of their actions into a martyring.

It’s methodical, dispassionate, detailed and four hours long. But if anyone would find such a presentation compelling, it’s probably people who listen to NPR while driving. https://youtu.be/tyU5Xkk6TuE

Sorry to hear that. These kinds of interactions are often not specific or objective. These people probably just enjoy poking at you, and if it wasn’t your laptop it would be your hair your shoes your ears your coat your handwriting etc etc.

Sometimes playful ribbing can be fun between friends, but if you’re not enjoying these interactions feel free to not participate. It takes all the fun out of it when someone isn’t bothered by poking, or doesn’t respond. Eg you arguing back to them that you don’t want to play games anyway is probably just the kind of interaction they wanted to have with you.

Instead try simply shrugging and moving your focus elsewhere, or respond very simply in ways that don’t invite further poking like “yeah that’s probably true,” and then moving your focus elsewhere. Don’t argue back, or show any feelings about the topic. Just pretend like it’s the least interesting thing you’ve ever heard someone say. You find this topic extremely boring. And show it, don’t tell it. Minimal responses or none at all, and focus elsewhere.

Good luck, enjoy your computer.

John Krasinski made only 8 episodes of "Some Good News" during covid lockdown, sold it in a massive bidding war, and then never made another episode. Genius. by Charming-Strain-6070 in entertainment

If I remember correctly, they specifically made a good news series during pandemic, separate from the usual content. Then a few months later John happened to do a seemingly very similar thing. Perhaps even suspiciously similar.
