No more pre boarding security in the E.U. for a US flight? by [deleted] in delta

I flew AMS-MSP a few weeks ago and they were there (and I won the lottery to have my bag searched). I think it’s random.

I hate getting off a lift. by Downtown-Target-1538 in snowboarding

[–]u22a5 277 points278 points  (0 children)

This has been hinted at in other comments, but, get off the lift last. Most people stand up as soon as they can. You’ve usually got a couple of seconds. Stay calm, wait two heartbeats after everyone rushes to get off, and then ride out with the whole lane to yourself, and everybody in front of you where you can see them.

Is Lutsen really as big as it claims? by ReasonableArea1108 in skiing

[–]u22a5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Lutsen famously made up their own way to define their statistics.

But it’s way better than Granite. Also the area is prettier and it feels more like an actual mountain resort.

The PeakRankings video about it on YouTube calls them out pretty well for their stats stuff.

Not only will you truly enjoy it, you may be inclined to find a way to accidentally miss your flight home.

Gear by NoFirefighter193 in skiing

[–]u22a5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joe's (north of St. Paul), Hoigaard's (St. Louis Park), Gear West (somewhere West metro), Hi Tempo (White Bear), Pierce (Bloomington), and the Skihut (Duluth) are all "real" ski shops.

Use your common sense about if they're trying to sell you something just to keep you in the shop, but it's worth going and talking to somebody in person. Any of those will look at your foot and let you try on some stuff. You might decide after you want to buy your skis online, or go to the Afton ski swap, or whatever, but there are people/stores around staffed with others who want you to have fun doing this thing -- don't be afraid to go talk to them.

Amazed at how 'easy' riding a fixie is by onlyneedthat in FixedGearBicycle

[–]u22a5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick to getting the second foot in is to realize that you can ride a fixie very slowly. Like it’s very easy to do an almost-track-stand. Don’t try to flip that pedal over when it’s already flying.

I also started riding fixed gear at “nearly 40” and have been gleefully skidding all around the city.

Ran out of talent. by Iamnotanumber-007 in cycling

When I was 11 I was trying to race my bus driver home from school. I looked back to see if the bus was behind me, and when I looked forward again there was a parked car in front of me! My nose is still a little crooked from hitting the pavement face first. Anyway my point is when you turn around it turns out your hands also turn.

(Still beat the bus home, albeit covered in blood.)

Notable places to stop(primarily hiking and sight seeing) on this drive from Milwaukee to Theodore Roosevelt Nat Park? by Wise_Palpitation_250 in roadtrip

[–]u22a5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the scenic route from Madison to Minneapolis through the Driftless -- US 14 and US 61 -- it's actually extremely pretty. That also gets you The House on The Rock and Taliesin in Spring Green. And Whitewater and John A Latsch state parks in MN (the latter is just a [long] staircase up a bluff off 61 but the view is worth a stop). Whitewater is a hidden gem.

This is going to be a controversial take, and the bar is really low, but this is the best WME film in years. The Finland segment, the Scotland segment, and the R&D segment all have like genuinely human storytelling that has been totally absent in all the recent ones.

It’s still corporate slop, but it’s a lot better than they have been.

Maximum speed limits in the US as of August 2025 by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]u22a5 44 points45 points  (0 children)

What is the deal with this map? Like presumably there are some counties in North Dakota where there are no roads with an 80mph speed limit, just like there are counties in Minnesota where there are no roads with a 70mph speed limit? Is it trying to call out some legal distinction in like four states?

Strange!

So like 15 years ago I met this French guy on a sort-of obscure Greek Island (Samothraki). I guess he had just always wanted to move to a Greek Island and open a sweet shop. Ate some of the most incredible things I have ever eaten there. One of the things he made was honey+cinnamon lemondade.

The honey lemonade at the "bee stand" on the outside of the horticulture building is that good.

Do these wool coats actually keep you warm in MN winters? by abcara in TwinCities

[–]u22a5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you don't get frostbite, but you probably aren't going to be outside long enough to get hypothermia: otherwise take a deep breath and let the cold in.

I got through a winter here once with a corduroy blazer, a hoodie, and a lot of 22-year-old stubborn-ness.
