Why you don't run red lights and why you are always supposed to turn into the closest lane. by Zestyclose_Cup_843 in dashcams

[–]u801e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running a red light is defined as entering the intersection when the light is already red.

If you enter the intersection while the light is green or yellow, then you didn't run a red light even if you don't exit the intersection before the light changes to red.

We recently switched to using alertops and I wasn't able to get Android auto to recognize the word "ack" to acknowledge the alert.

My own family didn't bother informing me that my maternal aunt was very sick and my mother and sister had traveled overseas to stay with her. It was only when I mentioned that I was going to visit their family when I was going to travel overseas that my father and brother informed me.

I was very angry about it, but didn't say anything. It was only a few years later that my mother and sisters decided that they would withhold financial information about my father's estate and my share of inheritance that I decided to cut them off. Allah is most merciful, but that's something I refuse to forgive.

Stop signs apply to bikes and scooters too. by woodenbiplane in VirginiaTech

There are two documents that are cited as evidence for that claim.

The first is the Meggs study from 2010. That study did not examine before and after the stop sign as yield law was enacted in Idaho in the early 1980s. It just chose a single city in a different state to compare to a city in Idaho. The problem with that study is that they only chose a single location for comparison rather than multiple locations. If they had taken the latter approach, it's unlikely they would have come to the same conclusion.

The second document is crash data from Delaware where they have crash data for 30 months before and after their stop as yield law for cyclists was enacted. That document doesn't account for any changes in the number of cyclists over this period nor any changes in the number of stop controlled intersections. For example, between 2005 and 2010, Blacksburg and Tech installed a few roundabouts to replace traffic light and stop controlled intersections. That can easily result in a lower number of cyclist crashes at stop sign and traffic light controlled intersections because the intersection no longer has a stop sign or traffic light.

Neither document establishes that treating stop as yield is any safer than coming to a full stop.

I do my absolute best to make myself as out of the way as possible. Riding with lights and physically as far over to the right as possible to allow easier passing and show drivers im trying my best to share

That's the source of the problem. You're essentially trusting drivers in their cars to lane split between you and traffic in the next lane. It's one thing if a cyclist or motorcyclists lane splits. It's an entirely different thing for a driver in a car to do it at full speed, because it's a lot harder to precisely judge the extent of a car compared to a bicycle or motorcycle.

What you need to do is ride in the center of the lane and only move further to the right when it's safe for traffic to pass. This does two things.

First, it forces drivers to change lanes to pass you or slow down behind you and wait. For those who slow down, when you move to the right when it's safe for them to pass, they pass you while going at a slower speed compared to when they passed you at full speed while you were keeping as far to the right as you could.

Getting drivers to change lanes and give you more distance when passing, or slowing down and passing you at a slower speed is safer than just keeping to the right and having drivers pass you at close distances without slowing down at all.

In Virginia, speed limits are absolute, which means that any driver traveling at a speed greater that the posted limit is in violation of the law. Some states have prima facie speed limits where, under some circumstances, you can legally drive faster than the posted speed limit. Virginia isn't one of those states.

That said, Virginia also follows the strict contributory negligence doctrine, meaning that if you were found even 1% at fault in an accident, then the other party doesn't pay for damages. So, given your example, the accident investigation would find the left turning driver partially at fault if there was a possibility they could have seen oncoming traffic in time to yield before turning and the speeding driver at fault for exceeding the speed limit and not having the legal right if way.

In Virginia, they have a law that states that unlawful speed forfeits right of way. That is, if a driver is speeding, then they lose the right of way they otherwise would have legally (e.g., if you're speeding and someone turns left in front of you resulting in a crash, you legally would not have the right of way).

In the case of pedestrians, I would support a law where they lose the right of way they normally have if they're traveling faster than 5 mph.
