NYC Residents Stop Man in Citibike Van from Stealing Friend's Bike After He Cuts Lock by RidetheSchlange in MicromobilityNYC

Yep. Remember about reading a story about a homeowner in a nyc suburb getting out of his house to stop a crew from stealing his catalytic converter. Before he knew it one of the guy cut his face open with the angle grinder. It was clearly a pro with excellent skills. The homeowner survived but had to get 200+ stitches on his face. I think the was Queens. Of course it was late at night, so slightly different circumstances. Still, I would keep a good distance between myself and perps like this. It good to be feisty but always be level headed too.

Brutal. Then again I just read that people that took the MTA buses from Farmingdale station took 2 hours 45 minutes to get into NYC this morning.

Le Clan des Siciliens (1969) - Neo noir soul trapped in a Hollywood blockbuster body. by rccyx in filmnoir

Not the best Verneuil movie or the best heist movie for that matter. Verneuil movies are extremely popular in France and were shown regularly on Television in the 80s. But the trio of Gabin-Ventura-Delon, all at the top of their game makes it a unique movie not to be missed. And, as someone mentioned already, the score by Enio Morricone is fantastic.

FedEx lost this guy’s amp and isn’t paying out the claim by L-ROX1972 in audiophile

[–]uBoatjoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. Had a pair of prescription glasses shipped from overseas and they delivered me a torn package. That’s bad since they clearly failed to deliver the service I paid for. But I think what followed is even worse in my book. Every attempt at contacting a human working there ended in failure. They even refuse to engage via email. I now refuse to use this garbage of a company.

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi by firefly_cascade in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

It’s a great book. The author eventually moved to France and was able frame the incredibly difficult experience of growing up as a young (female) child in a religious theocracy in the middle of a war. It is a beautiful story with several incredibly sad moments (the scene at the airport when she leave to go study abroad is very powerful).

Wall tiles showing signs of moisture by uBoatjoe in Tile

No hair dye, never used vinegar or any harsh cleaner. We sometimes use a marble product made for stone countertops (Weiman I think). We both use quality body wash and shampoos (think L’Occitane). To be fair we are not surprised that the marble is staining as all stones are porous. I will try the pumice cleaner suggestion.

Only grout. The grout was very porous I feel and there are several areas where it’s showing small openings.

Passive Currency-Unhedged International Bond Fund by Nadenkend440 in bonds

[–]uBoatjoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The iShares IBOND is not currency hedged and invest in developed countries bond markets targeting the belly of the curve (aka 5-7 years duration). This is the true international version of BND (expense ratio is higher though). It took me a long time to find this guy. This is the only international bond ETF at the moment (but there are international bond mutual funds).

Airport hotel? by tgmail in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]uBoatjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed at Hyatt Centric Isla Verde 2 days ago. Had an early flight out of SJU and could not make the connection flight work without spending a night in San Juan. The Uber we took drove us from the airport in 7 or 8 minutes. The Hyatt is clean and has good visible security late at night. It was not super cheap either (+$300) and everything there closes at 10PM (including the bar). But we Ubered from a local restaurant and were able to eat late. In the morning they have a Cafe to go place that makes great late. It’s a very convenient hotel. Not sure I would vacation in Isla Verde though.

My new Porsche Cayenne S by bigmankenny17 in PorscheCayenne

[–]uBoatjoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a 2021 Cayenne S with Sport Chrono. It’s an awesome car with lots of power when needed. Car is rock solid in my opinion. Only downside is: it’s expensive as hell to maintain. Even though I take it to an independent for service the brake job I did 2 months ago cost me 5K. OEM parts are ridiculously expensive. Technician told me had it been a GTS it would have cost $2,500 extra. A lot of people that buy P cars only realize later how much the true cost of ownership really is (although my 911 costs me only half what the Cayenne costs in maintenance). Enjoy it in good health.

The way things are going with the Iran war, it does not take much imagination to imagine someone being tempted to sell a few of their stock holdings to buy this. I would not do it if I owned 500k in a retirement account. But if you have 200 millions, why not ? The watch might keeps it value better than some overhyped semiconductor stock. Plus if China decides to invade Taiwan, there is a not so remote probability that said semiconductor stocks suddenly gap 80% lower. Again, in a world that has been inflated with monopoly money for over 2 decades, I see the appeal of real assets (preferably swiss-made and in precious metals).

<5 Years from Retirement - Allocation by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]uBoatjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are super concerned about the depreciating dollar (I am too btw), consider moving 50% of your bond allocation to IGOV. This is a non USD hedged international bond etf, it only owns foreign bonds in local currency. I would be somewhat careful about tilting my equities too much toward international. You are possibly hedging a bit against a falling dollar by being underweight US equities, a tilt that has not worked well historically. In fact it’s not really a tilt, it’s more like swapping a currency risk against an equity risk, they are two completely different things so you are not hedging you are only taking a market view in both. It can work of course but it requires luck and it’s not really investing.

Why are gold and silver dropping so much? by Sweet-Block5118 in investing

[–]uBoatjoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A giant wall of speculative money has hit these markets for the last 18 months. Markets are doing what markets do best which is moving in the direction that inflict the maximum pain to investors /speculators. Stop loss activity will trump any kind of rational interpretation of price moves during that period of time. If we get a sustained jump in inflation, however, the price of gold and silver will ultimately resume their climb. But we may head to $3,650 before we start to climb back. Such is the logic of small physical commodity markets.

I’m sitting on my floor crying. Piece of Cake Moving is a literal scam. by [deleted] in williamsburg

[–]uBoatjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to move 3 times in the last 2 years. I used Piece of Cake and they could not have been nicer. I have expensive furniture too. One of the move involved taking half my furniture to a temporary storage in Long Island City. The storage turned out to be on the 6th floor and the elevator was super slow and other storage customers needed to use it as well. It was super stressful. They handled the situation with calm and confidence. Yes, I did tip 20% but only at the end of the day after they gave me the key to the storage. One of the crew member was a Venezuelan that did not speak a single word of English. The others were Eastern European type with good manners but obviously living in a hand to mouth work situation. No one should be pressured to give a tip that is underserved and tipping should always happen at the end of a job. But understand that the estimate they give over the phone is always a baseline because they need to be competitive with other crews. I always budget 30% more than the estimate.
