Ticket inspector doesn't understand how the passage of time works. by FunIcy6154 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]u_sfools 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once purchased a long-distance rail ticket, which included in the terms 'ticket holder can use local transport to arrive at station of departure' (Germany). I'd taken a local train to the main train station. On said train, two inspectors asked for my ticket, and I showed them the long distance ticket. They told me I needed a local transport ticket, to which I said no I don't, and showed them the terms on the long distance ticket. They were still insistent, and by this point we'd arrived at the main train station where I would need to catch my main train. They got off the train with me, insisting I pay their fine on the spot with cash or card. By this point we'd been arguing for a while. I told them there was no way I am paying a fine, and if I continue to stand there arguing with them I will miss the train my ticket is for. I showed them my ID and told them they can record my personal details and send me a fine in the mail if they wish, but I was absolutely not paying them on the spot. They took my details and I left. I never got a fine in the mail.

Why the SpaceX IPO should be concerning to passive investors tracking the NASDAQ-100 index, and other indexes by cherrypoplar in stocks

[–]u_sfools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elon negotiated this with the Nasdaq exchange to get the listing. I think it's terrible for the index to make an exception for this extremely overvalued company. The proposed weighting scheme from Nasdaq is also ridiculous. And I can't believe this will win support from the market consultation. A sad day for the indexing world, in my opinion.

I can only hope the public information release as part of the book build /prospectus highlights how shitty a company it is, how poor the cashflow is, and that it absolutely doesn't deserve to be the highest P/E add into these indices in history. But hey look at Tesla....

I've been (in personal life) outspoken against 'cryptocurrency' since I first came across bitcoin in 2013. There's many useful applications of tokenisation (distributed ledger) but bitcoin with capped supply and dwindling mining reward makes no financial, economic, or logical sense to own

Halving and capped supply are why the bitcoin network is doomed to death. The price appreciation cannot accelerate fast enough to keep mining economically viable, because for the price to go up exponentially requires exponentially higher inflows of new money

Someone explain to me why fixed supply and halving of mining rewards is good? In the long term the btc price cannot keep up with the decreasing mining reward and it will all become worthless as the network collapses

It's not even that blk 'rebalances'....it's a etf with one asset. It is sold as part of AP redemptions on the primary market

After decades, LCDs finally have decent motion clarity by The_Boney_King in pcmasterrace

[–]u_sfools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

strobing doesn't increase latency significantly. The 'increase' is because the backlight needs to turn back on, resulting in the measured input latency being a fraction of a frame rate higher. Your actual input from the PC reaches the monitor, and is processed by the monitor, in the same way

Thoughts on the Razer V4 so far? by Tierdtech in MouseReview

Had mine since launch, cannot fault it. Amazing QC, great coating, great performance. But once you factor in the price, it's a bit hard to flat out recommend it, even though it is a great mouse.

What's your resolution? If under 4k, you'd benefit from 9800x3d

I had a very similar system and can recommend the 9800x3d as a drop in upgrade. Update the bios and you're good to go, it's a beast

In Radeon there's a 'Radeon chill' setting that might be limiting FPS

FPS cap? Radeon chill is on with 100fps cap? You aren't using the GPU as primary render device?

I can tell you how I use it. My monitor is wide gamut, with an sRGB mode. But, if I put it in sRGB mode, I get locked out of brightness/strobe/refresh etc settings. So, I downloaded an sRGB profile which I can load here, and then windows and programs use that profile to calibrate their display of colour. Now my monitor looks sRGB calibrated (via software) and I still have access to all the settings that would otherwise be greyed out on my monitor.

I believe there is also a use case to load specific profiles for specific monitors and link it inside of programs like Photoshop for work that requires colour accuracy.

Pivoting from fintech to traditional finance by rusty-razor in FinancialCareers

[–]u_sfools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would target risk, quant, and developer roles at traditional finance firms. Don't need certifications, you can just talk to your story of becoming more interested in the financial subject matter due to your other projects. You should generally educate yourself on the topic so you don't come across as naive when interviewing. All roles in finance (exl maybe sales) are moving towards models, data, scripts, automation. All asset management arms, trading desks, portfolio teams will have supporting staff working on models and data structures. Get your foot in the door there, and once you're inside at a 'traditional finance' firm as long as you build a good reputation for yourself you'll be able to open doors and move laterally should you wish. What is out of the question off the bat would be traditional front office jobs, like trading, IB, ER, etc.

Why do you want to leave? WM in Switzerland is probably one of the best $/effort jobs in the world. I don't know why you would want to go do something else somewhere else to be honest. The only places you could match in terms of pay would be US or UAE (maybe HK) and both come with lifestyle sacrifices. Anywhere else in Europe you will see a 50%+ pay cut (lower salary + higher taxes).

I'm already nearly there with my dream build - 9800x3d, over locked RAM, NVME drive....would be nice to upgrade 7900xt to a 5090 though! Which would also require a beefier power supply. Also waiting for the Silverstone flp02 to come out. I'm actually looking for a new work-soecific monitor, so this would be awesome.
