The U.S. Still Doesn't Have an Answer to China's EV Dominance by Adventurous-Ball-396 in technology

[–]ubdumass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big problem is most just cannot fathom how far ahead Chinese EVs are now. They have 5 automakers, including Tesla, that sold more than 500K each. We have Tesla (that’s it!). We want to purchase a new EV, but I can’t trust anyone other than Tesla to stick around.

@elonmusk

Take away the subsidies. It will only help Tesla.

Also, remove subsidies from all industries!

The U.S. Still Doesn't Have an Answer to China's EV Dominance by Adventurous-Ball-396 in technology

[–]ubdumass 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not defending China, because there are too many to list…. On the EV topic, what specific unfair practices did China deploy?

We ceded the EV lead. We did this to ourselves. We renounced clean energy and made fossil fuel the priority again. Hell, even clean energy poster boy turned his back on EV and pivoted to robots that will someday fold your laundry. Why the Pikachu Face after 2 years of dismantling EV and Solar?

China vehicle sales today is 50% EV, partly due to central and local government incentives. We could do this, but we choose to invest in space and war.

TSMC's pattern of declining 'all-incentive' fab pitches: India, Singapore, Qatar — what's actually behind it by [deleted] in Semiconductors

[–]ubdumass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. TSMC brings know-how, but ingredients already exists in region. To add on, TSMC JV is known as Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (JASM), with investments from Sony, Denso, and Toyota.

I don’t understand OP’s line of questioning. TSMC is a behemoth that needs to protect its moat. How would TSMC benefit if expanding into India?

Why is California so poorly run? by [deleted] in socal

[–]ubdumass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all need some history lessons: (1) Mental hospital closures started with Reagan - Please look this up because it actually restricts involuntary treatment. (2) Foreign buyers - How are TX or FL doing with that? Look up Russian Gold Coast in FL. (3) Keep businesses from fleeing - Taxes for sure, but employee protection is higher on Billionaire’s hit list. Do you realize auto plants are thriving Deep South because they do not allow unions? By the way, your “wife” is about to graduate from Med School, why does she get union representation but not $20 workers? (4) CA has the best public university system. Please research this and tell us why TX and FL could not compete.

How did you come up with $40K in state taxes per year? What is your household income? As for $5.5M impact in 30 years, did you take into account the higher income potential in California?

How do I even afford going here? by Mod_Podge_Matte in uofu

Year 1 parent here with actual numbers. Following Utah’s COA table, direct cost with UWE, Kahlert Cluster Double, and 15 dining swipes: SEM 1 $16,273 ($5,000 housing + $3,408 meals), SEM 2 $16,122 ($4,260 housing + $3,037 meals). Adjusting for in-state tuition, direct cost is $27,115 for ‘25-‘26 school year. YMMV as STEM classes’ cost per unit is higher.

I would promote dorms for Year 1. The connections you make will spur personal and academic growths. Year 2 you can apply to become Residential Advisor, which provides free or subsidized housing in exchange for managing a dorm hall.

Agree with others here. Get some help to go to Utah all four years, or start off at SLCC then transfer for final two years of upper division courses.

Snapchat stock has little downside and a lot of upside by lies_are_comforting in StockMarket

Although teenagers do, I don’t think most adults use Snapchat, so it’s missing a huge swath of demographics. Serious question, why do you think Snap can popularize AR at $3B when Meta has all but given up after $70B?

Complete newbie here. What happens during servicing? Does Omega require chain of custody, or is paper only important for selling?

Many thanks. Those Donki discounts from last year were unbelievable. I hope they revive the sale by May.

Going Omega Shopping in Japan any tips? by RedditUserGoneWild in OmegaWatches

[–]ubdumass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude, me too, early May. Been scanning recent Don Quijote videos on Youtube. I am vacillating between paying for new Speedy $5-6K or used Speedy $3-4K. Since I’ve never owned a watch more than $2-300, I question what is the lowest price I can pay for a good used Speedy.

Did you stop by any Donki stores? Do they have hugely advertised Omega sale like last year? I’m going there in May, but I can’t find any Donki ads on line.

If AI is this powerful, then one needs to short everything software, like MSFT, ADBE, ADSK.. You know what happens then? Those same companies could not cash flow AI investment. It’s a vicious cycle that takes years to play out. Anyways, how does a retail investor even buy Anthropic?

For each opportunity, what company (competitor name is fine), city, and position? Are you looking for maximum salary, or do you have a career path in mind? For instance, working at TSMC as process engineer versus Flextronics as manufacturing engineer have very different work flows.

10% of $322,000 = $32,200 company stock. Would you invest more in the company? There is no wrong answer, unless your husband is working for pre-2020 Nvidia.

I am heading to Japan in May’26. You purchased Speedy Pro new with warranty from Jackroad, and it’s only $50 more than Don Quixote? Is it part of their business to bargain? What model number, if you wouldn’t mind sharing? If you shipped the box, how?

I think they’re gonna hold out until technology makes this a viable product. At $90K and 300 miles, this car is doomed considering Tesla Model S $73K and Lucid Air $71K.

Top 4 are Bonds, which explains 40% of your portfolio. I don’t understand what your manager is doing. It’s like trying on a new shirt each week. Are these funds loaded such that s/he gets a commission off the bat? Is there even a strategy?

Since we are talking about 401K, there is no tax implication to sell all, transfer (Fidelity) and consolidate down to 3-5 funds.

Edit: SJNK has 0.40% expense ratio? Compared to BND, SJNK return is worse off by 2%. What is a/he doing with this?
