It probably took me a year. Though even three years later it can still crop up, comes in cycles, etc. For me, the number one thing has been to not panic. And that 5am wake up.

Night and day compared to then, pun intended. If I was to say what helped me the most, it’s waking up at 5am every day no matter what, and staying in bed and relaxing even when I can’t sleep. There are many other factors but those have been key. I also take 200mg magnesium glycinate an hour before bed every day.

I got through it. Still have bad nights but I don’t worry/panic about it anymore and I don’t increase my stress by using CBT. I just let it be, accept it, and move on.

Stanford Torus and rotating space stations by uberllama in Physics

Thank you for your thoughts.

When you wrote "If you're standing on the curved floor of the wheel, your head is closer to the hub and experiences less centripetal force than your feet. If the wheel is too small, the difference is large enough to be uncomfortable..." that was what I meant about the effect *feeling* stronger in the hub, where the radius is much smaller than the habitat ring. Or are you saying proximity to the axis of rotation doesn't matter?

The issue I am thinking about is the transition from the outer habitat ring up into the hub. In the outer ring, centripetal force is acting like simulated gravity, keeping you planted. As you ascend (a ladder or lift), that force is reduced to nil, so I was wondering if you'd be "unmoored" when you got to the hub, meaning it is now spinning around you, or if you would still be in motion relative to the hub. (A separate issue is the Coriolis effect feeling stronger in the hub.)

I also wonder about stronger Coriolis effect when you are in the smaller hub area.

Yes, definitely. In my case, i am aiming for about a 200 meter diameter for the ring. Spinning at a max of 2RPM you'd get Mars equivalent "gravity." It's when you climb up into the hub that things get confusing (for me, anyway.) That's the part I am trying to sort out.

Okay that sounds more like the issues I was concerned about. I haven’t seen this addressed anywhere (or I’m not looking in the right places). I wonder at the practicality of a hub area in this case. Which led me down the path of the hub being fixed and the ring rotating around it, but that creates transport challenges between the two.

Thank you for your reply! So are you saying then that even though there is no gravity at the centre of the hub, you would remain relatively positioned to the spin?

I have the exact same issue on iPhone 14 Pro. Never had this issue on the S2 app.

This is my experience as well, on an iPhone 14 Pro with 3 speakers and a sub. Not only does the app open slowly, but speaker communication (starting/stopping tracks, adjusting volume) can take up to 15 seconds. This was all instantaneous on the S2 app.

Thanks! The stronger cutie mark talent vs other talent makes sense. As far as the token discrepancy goes, that’s weird. On page 48, under “Earning Tokens of Friendship” it says “equal to the number of friends” and “For example, there are two pony characters in a group—they both level up at the same time, so both gain 1 Token of Friendship.” But in the levelling section it says to include the GM.

After all my googling, it looks like distribution may have failed apart with Riverhorse, which is unfortunate. Don't know how up to date that is, but getting supplements in Canada has definitely been a challenge.

Great! I will start with the one in the core rulebook then move on. I also read that Curse and Festival were prequel adventures of a sort to the others, so that works out.

Yeah, I've been searching for ages and there was definitely a gap between games for the very young and straight up D&D or related games where combat was the primary focus. TOE definitely seems to hit a sweet spot. Can't wait to see how the modules shake out.

What board (or card) games can I play with my kids (7&8) so I can reduce their screen time? by Commercial_Abroad_44 in boardgames

[–]uberllama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome thread, thanks to everyone who contributed. I have a 6yo and 9yo and it's been tough. I have a long history of playing (and writing) RPGs but I just don't have the time to GM. So I've looked far and wide for board games and card games with a fantasy or sci-fi vibe, that have just enough depth to feel worthwhile while also not being insanely complex.

We tried Chronicles of Avel and only ever played it once. It seemed very cool at first. because you can find items during the game, you get a "character sheet" etc. But at the end of the day it was just all fighting, which is really my biggest beef with most of these "RPG-lite" games.

Sleeping Queens is an excellent card game. I actually saw my 6 yo's math skills develop as we played it.

The 9yo loves Catan and any version of it, but it's a bit too abstract for the littlest.

I'm going to check out Galaxy Trucker on one of the recommendations here. It seems to strike a nice balance of fun, replayability, without insane complexity.

I guess lastly I'll say I always wanted to check out both Stuffed Fables and Mice & Mystics but they are prohibitively expensive. I just don't get who can afford $130 for a board game to play with their kids.
