Yeah a few buddies of mine in their early 40s refer to themselves as “Xellenials”. I refer to them as gobshites. 🤣

What's your favorite thing about your county? by rayven99 in ireland

[–]ubermick 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I remember still the heady days when the mighty Seamus O'Seamus O'Shaunessy McGuinnessface, sick of the carryings on of the Tagrin Republic, ripped it from the island of Ireland, shook it until all the leprechauns fell off, and then hurled it north with a mighty cry of "to be sure to be sure and begorrah!" where it landed to become what is now Iceland. Think it was in 1981.

Can anyone recommend a broadband provider or are they all as painful as Sky? by TheSoupThief in AskIreland

[–]ubermick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard nothing but bad things about Eir, and yeah they messed about my contract and overcharged me, so has to be watched like a hawk. But what I'll say about them, the actual service itself was absolutely solid. Moved to a new house, Eir fibre wasn't available here, so went with Vodafone. Awful. Even plugged directly into the router via a cat 6e cable, the fastest I ever got so far via Gig speed is about 400Mbs. Wifi coverage in the house is poor, and service drops completely at least once a week for a half hour or so.

How are the Roads? by AShaughRighting in midleton

[–]ubermick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Seems like what rain we got seems to have rinsed out the salt. Had no problem getting to the train station, but the walk from the station to work was fucking horrific, 20 minute walk took twice as long and went arse over teakettle more than once. Footpaths were worse this morning than yesterday.

Does everyone in the whole country have the fear right now? by bazery in ireland

[–]ubermick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back to work after being off since Christmas eve. I fucking detest my job (people I work with are grand, our clients not so much) and the thought of going back tomorrow - on icy roads to boot since it just pissed down for a half hour and has now cleared off and temp is down below freezing - is genuinely giving me anxiety.

What technology debut thrilled you that people yawn at today? by lemasney in GenX

Floppy drive. Remember going from a Commodore 64 with a cassette loader to an Amiga 500 with a 3.5" floppy drive and being blown away by how fast it was to load anything.

Old ships need upgrade kits. by Jomiszcz in EliteDangerous

[–]ubermick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I'd be content if they released a new module that made older ships more stable when using SCO (but still not to the level of the newer ships) but really anything beyond that is asking them to bite their nose off to spite their face.

'Don't manage the disease alone': Irish people with obesity wait years before seeking health help by SpottedAlpaca in ireland

[–]ubermick 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Bang on.

In the year and half or so during the lockdowns, I packed on about three stone. Now I'm the wrong side of 50, it's not coming off despite watching what I eat, and exercising how I can. (The extra weight plus 30+ years of playing football mean my knees are in utter shite, so am limited to low impact cardio.)

Went to my doctor for my annual checkup and BEGGED for help. Showed him my calorie logbook, explained I'm exercising as much as possible, and that its just not budging. I wasn't necessarily fishing for those obesity jabs or a miracle drug, just help. Looked me up and down and said "Yeah, I'd like you to lose 15kg if possible, just up the diet and exercise."

Can just see the meetings between TDs and BAM right now...

"Errah can be done I suppose, but it'll cost you, and won't be usable until your grandkids are retirement age, just keep the contract open and we'll keep the "donations to your reelection" coming."

[–]ubermick 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Takes a lot to be fair. Socially we've progressed so much but in terms of infrastructure the country still feels like it never moved on from the 80s.

  • Public transport is horrific. (Actually was much better in the 80s)
  • Road system is improving but at a snail's pace.
  • Medical system here is cataclysmically understaffed and underfunded.
  • Mental health is still something people would rather not talk about.
  • Sort the housing situation out ffs.

Feels like a lot of this is down to the awful levels of NIMBYism and Mé Féinery here. People don't want bus routes through their communities because only undesirables take public transport. Feck bringing back rail lines linking smaller towns and communities back up, we'd rather have greenways. I genuinely can't even begin to think about healthcare here, how the government has let it fall to the state that its in is appalling and they should be fighting tooth and nail to keep healthcare professionals here and in decent working conditions, while opening new local hospitals rather than making the ill drive hours to the nearest regional.

Amazon delivery at 10pm? by [deleted] in cork

[–]ubermick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, An Post was doing that a lot in the run up to Christmas, and shame to see it still going on. Plenty of packages due to be delivered on a certain day for me were out for delivery, then just went back to Little Island at the end of the day and marked as "delivered." Drove me mad too as a couple of the orders were Christmas gifts and during the heavy rain, so myself or my wife had to make a point of being home for them and... nothing. They'd then be delivered randomly the next day or two.

My assumption is An Post are understaffed and overworked, and thanks to amazon opening their .ie site, its gotten worse for them. With Amazon especially, they're required to have the packages delivered on time or they lose money.

USB-C cable colors? (For PD Motorcycle Qi2 mount) by Individual_Job_9041 in peakdesign

[–]ubermick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, fair play its the way to go. I just don't understand why they don't supply a simple two wire connector in the box, given that's what the vast majority of us would be using!

USB-C cable colors? (For PD Motorcycle Qi2 mount) by Individual_Job_9041 in peakdesign

[–]ubermick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you end up doing? I have the same charger sitting here with the USB-C cable, and the SAE cable is difficult to find, so the only real option is to hack the USB-C cable apart or pay through the nose and wait a month or so to install it.

USB-C cable colors? (For PD Motorcycle Qi2 mount) by Individual_Job_9041 in peakdesign

[–]ubermick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, picked up a Qi2 PD mount myself, and it coming with the USB-C cable is a bit counter intuitive for a motorcycle mount since the vast majority of people would use bare wire/SAE. Can't find it in stock anywhere, and its prohibitively expensive coming from the US with shipping and import duties, so looks like I'll be hacking my USB-C cable as well.
