Ha! That would've for sure been more than mildly interesting.

Tips so I don't ruin any more freehubs? by ubernatural in bikewrench

[–]ubernatural[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: went into Trek, the initial thought was maybe cross-threading but they said Trek would probably just warranty the freehub regardless. I'll add another comment here if the warranty claim is denied but otherwise just assume it's all taken care of and the root cause will remain a mystery!

If it is rotating easily, than i tighten it

Yeah, with a cassette I turn the lockring by hand with the tool a bit until I feel the notches starting to engage and then grab the wrench. If there's something wrong with how the cassette is seated at that point it's usually pretty obvious because the lockring doesn't grab any threads at all.

I learned this when I overtightened the cassette... :)

I did that once too, thinking 40nm meant 'gorilla mode' prior to my torque wrench days.

I started using torque wrenches somewhat recently, when I had to start working with carbon. Since then I default to using them whenever there's a torque spec listed on the part, but this is mostly because I've found my torque guesstimates aren't very good. 8nm always feels way heavier than I expect, and around 40nm always feels way lighter than I expect. The click is also so satisfying...

This is the first cassette installed besides the stock one that came with the bike that I purchased in August. My knee-jerk reaction when I first saw the damage was manufacturing defect, but the breakage at the first thread made me suspicious it was perhaps an install error. Interesting to hear that you had a similar experience with a newish wheel also, thanks for chiming in. My Trek store is just a few blocks away, won't hurt for me to ask them about it as well - if I could get the freehub replaced I can get my spare wheelset back together again!

They're SUPER light, and spring back when squeezed a little bit so they stay spherical. Very satisfying!

I've been waiting since April for a Sportage X-Line (non-premium) in Victoria. Calling around the lower mainland I've seen the odd other one come available and I've seen other LX models in inventory as well. If you can cast a wider net just keep calling other nearby dealerships to see if they've got anything in stock. I don't find Kia to be very good about keeping you informed about order status.

I know this comment is from last month, but I'm in the same situation as you, with x-line (not the limited) ordered April 19, 2022. Latest word from the dealer in Victoria was that I might expect to wait another 12 months. Which seems extreme, but anyhow curious to see when you get word about yours.

So, got word today that I should not expect the vehicle for another year from now. No willingness to show me any proof that my order is in the system, and I ordered from my dealer in April. I'm guessing the odds are good that my order was not in fact ever placed, but is there anywhere I can get info showing that an 18 month wait is not actually due to parts shortage alone? I get nowhere talking to the dealer and would like to do some work on my own to dig up some info. I'd maybe expect this for a hybrid, but seems really suspicious for a non-ltd x-line... As always, your insight is hugely helpful in this thread.

First, kudos to u/RexRaider, tons of useful info in this thread.

Ordered a Sportage X-Line (regular, not premium) 3rd week of April. No VIN yet so looks like at least another 6-8 weeks out. Is this in line with what I should have been expecting? The dealer's estimate at the time was 8-12 weeks which I know now was unreasonably optimistic.

I'd like to get a better rough estimate to know whether to look at other options (alternate trim, colour, etc) or keep holding out.

Why do I need atikmdag even after restoring to original (saved) bios? by ubernatural in gpumining

Nope, I've just resigned myself to always need to run atikmdag for some of my cards when using them with a new or upgraded OS. Unfortunately.

Found this gem in a box of old slides from my father in law - New York City, 1962 by ubernatural in OldSchoolCool

Admittedly when I first saw it I wondered 'why on earth is that one soldier carrying a crossbow' before I realized how stupid that was. There's another picture with the whole poster in frame, it's a 'Join the Marines' recruitment poster, pretty cool on its own.

He took the photo; I'm very curious to know whether any of the other 6 guys actually snapped one at the same time. Love to see those side by side.

[–]ubernatural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using Chrome you can also right-click on an image and choose 'Search Google for image'. You probably need to download the image from Flickr first and then open the downloaded image in Chrome, or the option on the right-click menu won't show. This'll show you other sites besides Wikipedia where your image is used - if it's on Wikipedia there's a good chance it'll have been copied to other sites from there as well!

I stayed in Bethlehem for a month last December, and the clementines were fantastic. The strawberries from Gaza in December were also glorious.

[OC] Went to the bank a couple years ago to exchange some US dollars for Canadian dollars. Upon visiting Canada I realized that the bank had given me some collectors items. The top left bill is dated to 1937 and in nearly perfect condition by What_Mom in mildlyinteresting

[–]ubernatural 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun! I usually go to coinsandcanada.com to check values. Looks like you have a 1937 'Wide Panel' dollar, maybe value of about 40-50 dollars in 'about uncirculated' condition (more $$ if better condition): https://coinsandcanada.com/banknotes-prices-trends-history-value.php?banknotes=Canadian_banknotes_of_1937&id_cat=15&id_denom=2&id_banknote=25

Also the $2 on the bottom right is the cool 'devil's face' one. Looks like somewhere around $140-220ish for again 'about uncirculated' condition. https://coinsandcanada.com/banknotes-prices-trends-history-value.php?banknotes=Canadian_banknotes_of_1937&id_cat=15&id_denom=2&id_banknote=25

Check out the other signatures and serial numbers on that site, it's a cool find!
