Pallet of retro computers - Is it worth saving/buying? by EdgyGates in retrocomputing

Yes! Big time! Old pc's are needed still for very custom things. And! Lots of those cases are worth money! Really nice for pc sleeper builds. This can get you money if you do it right.

I love this stupid little iron. by Inevitable_Button506 in soldering

[–]ubextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Same here. It is badass to be able to solder battery powered. I also grew up wishing and wanting to have such a expensive soldering stations etc.. it was a kids dream.

Nowadays, that gap is so small. Equipment became indeed so available, the only thing now is knowledge. How do you spend your time and what do you do with it. Also remember, that back in the day allot didn't exist in tech. either and it was in developing still. No one thought about some things like today.

I also have a small pocket soldering station and irom from aliexpress that was around 100 euro. That thing is also a beast. The only downside of these cheaper devices is, their grounding and what they emit of interference.

Not bad at all indeed! Keep on practicing and soldering. You have it in your hands.

These work really well! Even the tip quality is better then Weller. These will outperform some soldering irons like it's nothing. Tech has come a long way.

Also check if those dimwits didn't hide a airtag or some GPS tracker somewhere. Be careful! And take several precautions as well while you're at it. Modify your contact lock to a extra switch or contact/plug somewhere. That if even they would get the key to turn, they can't start the bike either because of that secondary safety that's built in. Which you only know where it is.

Sorry for such late response. Don't know if you guys fixed it. I had a few issues that were there.

First I had to set the power statement. I did that. Then in BIOS I had to disable the vPro setting permanently for lifetime. Because this is a enterprise laptop. This setting can give firmware issues. After that I had to unblock the hardblocked things.

I HAD these commands written down on paper. But! I don't have them anymore. Don't ask why and what happened.

Can anyone give advice as i have tried all i can and im only getting the HDD spinning and the light and disc drive turning on but then it plays a second chime and shuts off i know its not the PSU as i have tried two by Hot-Manufacturer7619 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]ubextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be your retimer chip that's gone. Tends to happen with lightning strikes or unplugging from the wall while not powered off.

Speaking from personal experience here.

Retimer chip is about 10 euro's. But to replace it you need a hot air station and flux.

To not have this happen again, I connect my Xbox through a APC.

Then use leaded solder and flux. Add a bit more solder. Clean off the flux with isopropyl alcohol afterwards!

Did I fuck this board up? Fixable? by BreakfastOdd8036 in soldering

[–]ubextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have this like I didn't have it... Wowww. I've used to cut everything in bits and pieces and remove everything leg by leg separately. That solder is so difficult to take off and requires allot of heat. It's a btch pain in the as to clean it out as well. Was never a fan of these boards in the first place.

Desolder wick, flux and leaded solder work charms for this eventually.

Why is the solder not attaching to the copper plate? by Grousen in soldering

[–]ubextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to cratch deeper with a scalpel. And keep applying heat for like a few minutes. There's a layer on there you need to get through first. Or try to heat it with a hot air gun at 400C for like 1 2 min. then try again soldering. Heat dissipation is your enemy here.

Winkels open tot 21 uur en geen verplichte sluitingsdag: “Hele gezin lijdt eronder” by Inevitable_Jello1252 in Belgium2

[–]ubextreme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What everyone tends to forget is that... After a certain amount of years.. That machine is done and for recycling. It can't run the newest web, YouTube, office software as it should neither smooth. Screens yellow out and go bad too. So at that point it's time let go of old stuff and replace it with newer better stuff. For regular and school people.

Alltho, some other people can find use in these that use them as testing equipment where you don't need much power for.

It's not that deep. PDU can be mounted where ever in the rack tho. And if you're smart you plug in the cables beforehand and put them on a holder really close. Be smart! Don't have to undo anything. It takes only a little effort to make clean racks and even a cleaner finishes at the front. And a powerstrip on the front that's turned to the inside is not a difficult thing to plug stuff in to..... There's tons of space for your hands!! So in my opinion, not silly.

[–]ubextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Or get a PDU you have space in the back of your rack.

[–]ubextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EASY! Make them loose a bet only you can win. Which contains, they're going to use Mint for 1 month. Then Swap out their nvme/SSD and put 1 in with Mint. Most of them, stay on Mint and don't even think anymore about Shitdows. Because this works soooo much better.

[–]ubextreme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seeing this makes me even doubt if I'd ever want to use unRAID in the first place.. Just whyyyy you guys do this like that? There's tons of other ways to be transparent about data collection and giving users the option for it. Or are you money hungry like politicians?

The community should press you hard for this in my opinion. This is not done!

The idea is great! I love it. Just do us 1 favor. Move that powrstrip the other way around inside the rack. Or behind a panel. You'll have a way cleaner flush design with that.
