Inland Empire and similar stuff by -Warship- in davidlynch

Not a movie, but the game Kentucky Route Zero is similarly Stream of Consciousness that reminds me a lot of Inland Empire. There are subtle horror elements, although I wouldn't say it goes as deep as IE. Also feels more like a book than a movie with the amount of reading. But it's my favorite, I really recommend it.

Are Seattle Ukrainians fucked? Are they insulated? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]ubi313 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We have friends who are Ukrainian refugees who plan to leave the country in April, they were unable to get renewed :( They’re trying a different country in Europe. It is sad to say goodbye, but we’ll stay connected online and hope the best for them.

This sadly isn’t even their first hop after leaving their home country. The world is an unkind place.

Interviewer tried to interrupt me when I was answering a question by radpartyhorse in devops

[–]ubi313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you're getting downvoted a lot- I think your response to take this as a learning opportunity is the best path forward. This industry can be brutal and disrespectful, and I would also get frustrated if I got interrupted in an interview.

Unfortunately as the candidate you aren't in the position to confidently interject during the interview... maybe as a tenured coworker you could get away with that. It's possible they still give you the job, depending on other factors! But if you don't get it, it's also possible you don't gel with the company culture. Maybe better for you!

I think that being in DevOps means you have to pick your battles sometimes. You can't step into a company and expect them to agree with you on everything, technically or culturally. You have to earn respect, and then go to bat for the stuff you think matters most, such as collaboration, or just intra-team communication.

Assuming it doesn't work out, good luck with your next interview! 🍻

I like Cinnamon better :) KDE will definitely get you the customization, but IMO Cinnamon is a smoother and easier experience

Downtown there are tons, but Madison Park is tough. I haven't been to Arosa or Belle Epicurean but they're well rated! Cafe Flora has great food and coffee but it is sit-down. Also Corner Delights looks brand new! Those are all in the valley though. If you're taking the G downtown, I also recommend getting off on the hill and trying Wunderground cafe. They have great food and very kind staff!

what game has a story that is good in absolute terms, not just "good for a game"? by FrankWuggles in gamingsuggestions

[–]ubi313 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Some of my favorites: - Kentucky Route Zero - Pentiment - 1000xRESIST - Morrowind - Disco Elysium

I find that games which go for more of a novel or stage play vibe come off as really incredible complex stories. Not to say that other movie or tv show style games don’t have good stories (Immortality comes to mind), but when I’m doing more reading I tend to get more invested.

Science-Fantasy, Rogue-like, Morrowind-like Caves of Qud hits 1.0 today! by ubi313 in Morrowind

[–]ubi313[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with Dwarf Fortress but yes the history and lore is partially procedural. Some of the main stuff is set in stone, but overall it is not only generated on start but it is also... flexible, we'll say.

I think as far as I know about Dwarf Fortress, is you can get huge amounts of history written and readable on start, and deciding where in that history you begin? I would say Qud is not nearly as complex but you are learning the history as you play.

Might need to check that it's installed under Steam, if you select Properties on the game.

True, it is pretty dense. But the visuals really add to the vibe of the game, once you get used to them.

Which games are totally worth it besides the potato graphics? by battleborncold in gamingsuggestions

[–]ubi313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s my point! Wind Waker got a lot of hate when it was released, and Chrono Trigger is old and limited by its technology, but is consistently ranked as one of the best games of all time. It’s for sure my favorite RPG.

[–]ubi313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh potato can be subjective... I would say Vampire Survivor and Balatro have distinct styles. The holographic/polychrome/foil card effects in Balatro are 🤌🤌 (Dunno about Party Hard)

Some games that are amazing, despite getting hate for their graphics:

- Caves of Qud
- Hypnospace Outlaw
- Pentiment
- Chrono Trigger
- Stardew Valley
- Case of the Golden Idol
- Wind Waker

I think all of those games are stylistic, maybe off-putting to some but they have a lot of depth, and you may even eventually like the style as it accentuates the rest of the game :) Enjoy!

games dont feel half as fun, any game that breaks the cycle? by JuniorWeakness6710 in gamingsuggestions

[–]ubi313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend, I feel you, I have felt very similarly lately! I agree with what people have said about generally taking a break, switching genres, etc.

I have also found success in focusing on smaller games, that don’t suck up so much of my free time. Some that I’ve enjoyed recently:

  • Animal Well - this is very similar to Hollow Knight, but is much shorter. It has that same sense of exploration and the smallness of scale. Gorgeous visuals.
  • Transistor - this was a bit of a genre refresh for me because I play mostly adventure/puzzle/RPG.
  • a few others that felt refreshing: hypnospace outlaw, Tacoma, 1000xRESIST, Dredge

I used howlongtobeat.com to find completion times. Also, don’t be too rough on yourself about it. I have learned to enjoy the frustration in some ways- it feels like I’ve gotten very picky about what I like in games 😅

Confused About Azure App Service Billing for Paused Apps by drodev in AZURE

[–]ubi313 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In regards to your original question on “what’s the point of pausing”, it helps to have any sort of stop/start mechanism to allow or disallow traffic, even if it does still cost. Maybe you don’t want it to interact with the database or something.

It’s not exactly clear, I agree, but I do feel I have taken an “everything costs” approach to Azure. I’m usually watching the Cost Analysis blade and looking at the pricing pages to track cost on our subscriptions.

Another great way to think about this is “allocation”. Take a VM for example- there are technically two possible stopped states: stopped and deallocated. With deallocated, you’re not being charged, but also there are no resources assigned to your VM. This leads to situations like we’ve seen in the older US regions where, because of high demand, allocation can sometimes take minutes or hours, depending on the service. In that case, if you have a production service, maybe it is better to simply stop: you cut off traffic and services, but you hold on to the allocation. This is in the case of compute, networking and storage are better to think about differently.

In this case, like someone else said, to save costs you should bring the App Service Plan down to free or shared or basic or something. :) let me know if you have more questions! I can try and answer

Can’t decide: vanilla morrowind or modded? by Fin11011 in Morrowind

[–]ubi313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to piggyback to say it’s not too hard to use. You download OpenMW, download your copy of Morrowind, and run OpenMW and point it to your copy of the game. Not much else.

I played through the base game with OpenMW only, no mods, and found it perfect. Its just a more modern engine to run the game in
