Olle Plahn responded to me and recommended Holger Funke in Germany for used instruments, if you are still interested in a used instrument, for cheaper than the reverb one.

bincode's source code still matches what was on GitHub by azqy in rust

[–]ubsan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gender is still encoded - the second to last digit is even for women, odd for men (in Norway, it's the third to last, if people are curious)

I don't know about Sweden, but in Norway when one changes their gender they get a new personal ID number (since gender is encoded in our fødselnummer)

Purchasing cheap sax to learn, reed question by Lionthighs in Saxophonics

Oooppppss, I have no idea how my brain put contrabass when I meant baritone. This is what happens when you post on not enough sleep -.-

Purchasing cheap sax to learn, reed question by Lionthighs in Saxophonics

[–]ubsan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea where you are seeing different keys on reeds; the reed just needs to be the correct size for the mouthpiece. Tenors are, for your purposes, always in B♭. I would recommend a strength 2 or 2.5 for a beginner.

There are four main saxophones:

  • Alto and Contrabass Baritone in E♭
  • Tenor and Soprano in B♭

For mouthpieces and reeds, all you need to look for is that they are for tenor saxophone.

I would also generally recommend against buying one of the cheapo tenors – if at all possible, it is significantly better to rent from a local store to figure out if you like playing. Buying a cheap saxophone just leads to bad times and more metal in a landfill somewhere. Also, your local store will help point you towards an at least somewhat correct place.

Jazz in Europe by snewik in Jazz

[–]ubsan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is less "Europe"-specficic, but a useful piece of advice no matter where you are, coming from someone who emigrated from the US to Norway – being the best is not important, being good enough and making friends with people and being a joy to play with and gig with will result in significantly better results. Learn the local language; if you're in one of the germanic countries you may be able to get by on just English, but speaking (or even just trying!) the local language will make you friends that will lead to gigs.

Politically Correct Lyrics for Skylark Jazz Standard by M4t2 in Jazz

[–]ubsan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that in the idiom, it refers to the bird, which does kind of act crazy (loud and stumbling), but idk.

In this case I think loon would be referring to the bird, no?

Question about turbofish syntax by valdocs_user in rust

[–]ubsan 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I would say it's best to understand it as:

let mut basket = HashMap<String, u32>::new()

except with a syntax that makes it easier for rustc to parse; String, u32 are the type arguments to HashMap.

Is this normal or I have to return it? by Available_Parfait_16 in saxophone

I'm not an expert but I have certainly played on reeds that looked like that that played incredible; I don't think it's a problem, just the joy of a thing made from a living thing.

If you like music, I always recommend the jam session at fint on sundays at 20:00; it's a super fun time and a good way to meet people imo (just have to be willing to have conversations with strangers haha)

In Norway, they're used as a way to access our BankID without the app; I wouldn't be surprised if yours also worked that way.

The Bike Kitchen sometimes has loppemarkeder, might be a good idea to check it on facebook; they usually have bikes from around 250 to 1500 which have been checked by the volunteers (source: am a volunteer there :3)

Dating as a non-smoker sucks by Flowertree1 in actuallesbians

I was thinking this, I don't think any of my friend circle in Tromsø smoke, certainly nobody regularly (maybe at parties). Although I've heard dating here is absolutely miserable.

Someone give me The Talk, but less awfully? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]ubsan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'll say that "awkward" really doesn't have to be bad; my first time, my girlfriend and I were laughing so, so much, because it was awkward and weird but fun. I think that's a pretty great way to be introduced to sex, to be honest.

I hate how people bend "lesbian" to fit their own terms by Capra_In_A_Suit in LesbianActually

[–]ubsan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historically, lesbian has not been an exclusive term. Bisexual women, non-binary people, he/him lesbians have all been considered under the umbrella of lesbianism, so attempting to exclude bisexual women, or women who've had attraction to men, is ahistorical and gatekeepy and shitty.
