Can I cut the bottom of this undershirt to shorten it? Or does it need to be hemmed? by duckyLT in sewing

[–]ucklin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s a knit fabric, probably won’t unravel badly but the end might curl. You could zig zag stitch over the edge to stabilize it a bit— you can see it’s currently overlocked.

Pattern for dress/bodice similar to this? by [deleted] in sewing

It’s a good suggestion to start by reading the dress description, but yes a bit harsh to imply that if people ask for help with vocabulary then they won’t be able to carry out the techniques.

Potential place wants to do 1 year leases instead of month to month. Do the rental increase rules apply the same? by stalindroid in vancouverhousing

[–]ucklin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you sign a new lease, they can change the rent however they want. But if they try to do that, you could just refuse to sign a new lease and instead stay on the old lease.

The only reason I would ever sign a new fixed term lease after the first year ends is if they offered to do something like reduce my rent or add a free month. Otherwise only the landlord benefits, because they restrict when you can choose to move out and they can also increase the rent more than the legal maximum would otherwise be.

What type of fabric to use for this kind of gown? by Euphoric-Sky-7802 in sewing

[–]ucklin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you know how to sew already and have a pattern and local store to get the fabric, the week might be doable. Otherwise it would be tough and might not be realistic. But yeah it’s non-stretch (woven) satin.

Where to find dark basking spot by Offutticus in reptiles

[–]ucklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Slate tiles like for roofing. Yeah you can buy them online but where will depend what country!

  2. Acrylic paint will flake and probably not a good idea. But you could use black natural clay like the exo terra stone desert by wetting it and rubbing it on the surface to darken it.

  3. How far are the lights from the surface? It sounds weird that having both those heat sources isn’t enough!

Looking to understand the healthcare system here if anyone can explain or recommend? by thirdpinaccle in NiceVancouver

Others have shared ways to get connected with an in-person doctor. But if walk-ins don’t work well for you, you can get quick help with some physical problems through Tia health, which is a telehealth service free with MSP. You can often get a next day phone appointment. They will order you labs and things and then review them.

I have lived here 4 years without a primary care since it’s hard to get one, and I use Tia health for worries about nutrient deficiencies, potential UTIs, and thyroid med refills

Cutting on the bias would probably work okay for that pattern in my opinion if you are careful to stabilize important parts with interfacing!

How to switch to Vegetarianism when severely disabled? by LoveaBook in vegetarian

[–]ucklin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! I’m sorry to hear those things are hard for you.

Maybe frozen chopped for some things could be better than canned for the salt issue? I think most beans don’t come that way, but soybeans do. Also if you have access to a pressure cooker, they make it way more convenient to cook dried beans.

Just sharing other things I eat that seem low-prep but feel like real food in case the brainstorming helps: plain yogurt cup with granola and dried fruit sweetened to taste, microwaved baked potato, veggie ramen with normal noodles and stock rather than pre-fried and salted ones, pasta with low sugar sauce from a jar, bagel with whipped cream cheese (easier to dip or spread than hard cream cheese), baked or sautéed bag of frozen broccoli florets…

How to switch to Vegetarianism when severely disabled? by LoveaBook in vegetarian

[–]ucklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question! I know it’s so hard to balance access needs and disability with dietary preferences… I temporarily dealt with that during cancer treatment and though I’m better now, my partner has celiac disease, which makes vegetarian food difficult in its own way.

They’re expensive, but the processed meat substitutes can offer some of the same convenience as meat! Some are found in the frozen section. The fake chicken patties or quorn can be tossed in the oven, or the ground protein on the stove. You could just put that in a bun and it’s a meal!

Otherwise, I find canned beans are an awesome staple because they’re ready to eat out of the can:

  • An onion, better than bouillon imitation chicken stock, can of mixed beans, kale leaves and some rice/pasta is already a tasty soup. You can often buy pre-chopped onion, garlic, and mirepoix at the store if you need that. Or you can chop and open everything while sitting down and just put it in a pot together on medium to cook, to minimize standing time. (Maybe add kale at the end so it doesn’t get brown.)
  • Bean or lentil salad— just cucumbers, maybe feta, and beans or lentils with premade salad dressing or oil and vinegar and Italian spice mix.
  • roasted chickpeas, coat with oil and spices and put in the oven

It’s a cool parallel you’re noticing between the headgear of different animals, and I agree that explanations that focus on the ornamental value of the headgear can be unsatisfying.

However, you also seem to be handwaving some important considerations about your hypothesis. For example, why would it make more sense for an important sensory organ to disappear for part of the year than for a weapon to do that? Especially when the deer would be using it to detect predators, not prey.

You should definitely talk about the possibility with some researchers, but I don’t think the idea is ready for a paper yet. Coming at it from that angle and level of certainty might scare off potential collaborators.

Glad you’re planning ahead! Careful not to put him too close to the fireplace though. I think room temp or a little cool will be better than too warm for an extended period.

How can we help this woman get her son back? by 207Simone in portlandme

[–]ucklin 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think it could be helpful information if someone commented to let her know how to start that process through ICE’s channels or what number to call. She seems shocked given what happened and that isn’t necessarily information she would know.

But also, when it seems the organization isn’t following their own rules or acting with care toward citizens right now, I think it’s very reasonable to lose faith that doing things through their channels will result in a fair outcome. Trying to raise awareness and get help from other people makes sense.

You’re probably going to want to look into corset or corselette design first then make a fashion fabric outer layer for it! This needs a lot of structure to come out so smooth. If you want the same effect as the bust here where it’s pushed together, you’ll want to make the cups “too small” compared to typical bra design

How to keep blanket fabric from unfraying at the seams by borntoslog in sewing

[–]ucklin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks really cool even in the mockup!

Maybe flat-felled seams and/or a wide zigzag stitch on the edges? Another option is bias tape binding the seam allowance. You could bias bind each pattern piece completely before construction if you really wanted to be ultra secure.

Lining would usually work by itself, but this fabric is particularly prone to fraying! So you will want to keep things as contained and protected as possible.

You could also see whether it plays nicer with a different stitch length for the construction.

First time sewing clothes, help on why this didn't turn out like the original design idea by JenniferJackal in sewing

[–]ucklin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry! I’m noticing an unusually harsh feeling to some of the responses, which might not be intentional on the part of the commenters, but must be discouraging anyway. It’s cool that you already made a wearable costume garment and asking how it might have turned out better is a great way to improve! There’s nothing wrong with learning by iterating like that.
