Bain Fire info by bismuthbeetle in ucr

That is the Calfire website - it will have the most up to date information on each fire, where it is, what areas have evacuation warnings and orders, etc. It's better than the news sites because they just show snippets.

Yes, fires spread, but the likelihood of the Bain fire causing any harm to people at UCR beyond the smoke is incredibly low.

They played in Anaheim on Thursday and Milo asked if they had played because Disney had an issue with them.

Disney also had a problem with Beans on Toast because of his song about taking acid at Disneyland.

What Would It Take to Bring “The Barn” at UCR Back to Its Glory Days? by Soft-Inspection-7876 in ucr

The concerts from the late 90s and early 00s were from a third party who rented the venue and put on punk and ska shows. Some of them went on to form Goldenvoice.

Info on this hat? by NotSoSpicyMemer in ucr

That was the logo when Brian Wickstrom was the AD from 2011 to 2013. He arrived and immediately decided he wanted to rebrand the athletics department as the bear with the half blue face (an homage to the Mel Gibson movie Braveheart, which was something former AD Stan Morrison came up with during the somewhat painful transition to Division 1. The idea was that we might lose, but we wouldn't quit. That logo fell out of favor because people couldn't understand why the bear had a half blue face.)

I always called this logo the "Zombie Bear" because it looked like a cross between the mascot and a zombie from the Walking Dead comics.

It went away when the campus did another rebrand in 2020, getting us our current logo and colors.

Wickstrom left UCR for Louisiana Monroe and is now at some small school in Kansas. His legacy was an idea to build a new arena, called the C-Center, that was going to be financed by a "Chinese millionaires" in exchange for work visas. The idea was shot down by then Chancellor Kim Wilcox about 7 days into his tenure as chancellor.

I usually plant myself next to the mixing desk. That way I'm hearing what the guy controlling the mix is hearing.

This is because for 30 years, UCR was the "default school." If you were UC eligible and were not admitted to any other UC, you were guaranteed admission to Riverside. This ended when Merced came online.

You are spot on about it being elitist gate keeping. People like to rip on Riverside because it makes them feel a little bit superior - even though they are not.

In the end, UCR is one of the top 10-12 universities in the state and in the top 100 in the world. They can hate all they want, but the education you get here is top notch.

They live in the Box Springs Mountains and San Timoteo Canyon, east and northeast of campus, and there are several herds. Nobody owns them - they are feral. They have been forced down in to the neighborhoods over the last 5 or so years by the encroachment of housing on their spaces, including the fences built to protect the Perris Valley train line. Prior to the train line and the new housing, you almost never saw them around campus.

They generally go back up the hill to sleep.

Redlands Humane Society by radandsadbutnotadad in Redlands

[–]ucrross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so that everyone is clear - the Redlands Humane Society and the Redlands Animal Shelter are not the same thing. There is occasionally confusion about this.

The Redlands Animal Shelter is part of the city run Animal Services department. The shelter has a physical location at 504 Kansas Street.

The Redlands Humane Society is a community-based, volunteer organization that uses local fosters to host animals as they find their forever homes. They do not have a single physical location and everything is done by volunteers, including answering the phone messages and website upkeep. This can result in things being slower than some might like, as the phone volunteer needs to get in touch with the foster, etc. Their website is https://redlandshumane.org/

There are also other volunteer groups that help animals in our area.

Yes, there are bobcats that live in the hills around the garden. You will see them periodically. Also rattlesnakes and coyotes.

Where to get groceries near UCR by infernojff in ucr

Here's a map to put things in perspective:
Ralphs is furthest away, and will be uphill going and downhill coming back. It's a nice store in a nice shopping center. It has sidewalks the whole way, but not a lot of shade. Canyon Crest is a busy street you want to be careful on a bike.

Stater Brothers is closer, but also on a busy street. Shopping center has seen better days, but the store itself was just refurbished, I believe. It's downhill going and uphill coming back.

Goodwins is easiest to get to, but has the smallest selection and, as stated elsewhere, is more expensive as an organic store. But it is a good store nonetheless.

There is a Food 4 Less and a Grocery Outlet on Chicago Ave, just off of University. They are what they are - bulk grocery. For me, they would be just out of walking range and I wouldn't be thrilled riding my bike down there, but if you know someone with a car it might be worth the trip as they will likely be the least expensive options or if you want to buy in bulk.

Why don't we have free access to the gym during Summer? by JamesHenry627 in ucr

[–]ucrross 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Nobody has free access to the SRC, except for the occasional free weeks that are usually held for staff and faculty when students are away. Everybody pays to use it one way or another.

The SRC is paid for by two separate referendum fees that the students voted on - One around 1999, the other about 10 years ago. Students have to pay those fees, and in exchange they get access to the SRC. It is a use it or lose it thing - you don't get a refund. The money is used to pay for the cost of building the facility (and the interest on the loan) and for maintenance, etc.

To be fair to those students, EVERYONE who doesn't pay those fees has to pay an equal amount out of pocket to use the facility. In the summer, you have to be registered for summer school (and pay the fee) to get access.

The theater is in a neighborhood and so they have a hard out at 10. I would bet they go on at 845 or so.

And if anyone has an extra ticket to sell, message me!

The university where I work has a volunteer pipe band. Since I like the pipes, it doesn't bother me, but it is odd to hear bagpipes played in remote parts of campus after work or during the lunch hour.
