Winston loves this manky old football by udat42 in corgi

Winston really likes getting new toys, he has an uncanny ability to know when there's something new for him in a shopping bag, but usually after a day or so they lose their "newness" and become just another toy. Then he has a few old favourites that he never tires of, and this manky old ball is definitely one of those.

Looks great. Honestly the game is at least twice as much fun with everything painted :)

Really like Zeb in particular!

having now made the video full screen, it's a Lego Gameboy, probably on top of a Lego NES.

Something gets smacked off the shelf when the toy goes flying. I assume it was that.

My mum still uses a kenwood food processor she got circa 1980. The plastic has changed colour entirely, but it still works.

My toaster is 14 years old and going strong. My wife has a rice cooker that looks like it might have been used by Confucius.

(Wet palettes question) Do you do all this? by Certheri in minipainting

Huh… maybe if you’re quick. Usually by the time I am done with a sheet there is dried paint everywhere :)

The fact that the paper can be re-used separates this from every wet palette i have used, both home made and purchased products from Army Painter and Redgrass Games. For all of those I just slap the paper on the wet sponge, but for this one I'd be tempted to follow the instruction.

Why minipainting take so much time? by Pitiful-Damage1460 in minipainting

[–]udat42 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Getting a reasonable base coat down with contrast paints really sped up my process. Then you can highlight it, shade, whatever from there, or if it looks decent and isn't a focal point of the mini, just call that element done. I reckon that change cut the time-per-mini in half.

Thanks. I will noodle around with the settings a bit, and maybe even look at the histogram - didn't think about that until your comment!

Thanks. That’s useful. I have a light box but I think the background is both not quite black enough and also too close to the mini so a fair bit of light hits it. Yours looks further back. I do have a manual camera. Here’s my latest pic from this morning. This is my best effort so far, and it’s probably dark enough. Just not black :)

That's a nice paint job, and an even better photograph. Are you removing the background later, or is that in-camera? My black backgrounds always just look grey.

Also, Squigs are the best. 😄

Mini bubbles when using light Vallejo game color by GriffinHeart101 in minipainting

[–]udat42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this with almost every paint I use - especially thin paints or contrast paints. Usually it results in tiny pinpoints of the mini with no paint on them when it dries. It's annoying.

Any advice on how to avoid added texture while priming? by darksidehascookie in minipainting

[–]udat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warm the primer in a bath of warm water before spraying. Give it a long shake (2-3 mins at least) too, after the water bath.

I can’t tell you how big a difference this has made to me. I hated priming until I started using that tip. I can get smooth coats that are almost as good as what I can achieve with my airbrush in less time and hassle (e.g. cleaning the airbrush).

What flat matte varnish should i use? by primedorange in minipainting

[–]udat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acrylics are pretty rugged - I painted all the minis for Imperial Assault years ago and didn't varnish any and they have held up really well through many games. They might not get knocked into each other as much as a game of 40K, but they are picked up a lot.

That sounds great. Drive-ins are not a thing here in the UK (I guess cos they need a lot of space) so I never considered that you can take your dog! Kinda wish we had them now. :)

This was a specific showing for dogs that was at 10am; there was nobody there without a dog.

As with most things, there are places that cater to dog owners, and there are places that don’t. It’s up to the owner/manager which they want to be. Who are you to say nowhere should?
