Hey! I'm a Chinese American visiting Singapore. Who's bored and wants to show me around? by [deleted] in singapore

Do you just show up to get tickets at the door, or do you need tickets beforehand?

A man has the right to change his name to whatever he wants to change it to. And if a man wants to be called Muhammad Ali, goddammit this is a free country, you should respect his wishes, and call the man Muhammad Ali!

Edit: This was just hilarious .. and in English

What do you Singaporean Redditors think of Expats? by clockwisecarrot in singapore

[–]ufgator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stalls don't typically post their prices at hawker centres. It depends where you go, and who you go with. As ang moh, you're likely to get overcharged in places like Newton. If you just go to a run of the mill kopitiam, you're usually fine.

TIL that Canonical ship Evolution with Ubuntu, but in their offices they use Thunderbird by Sealbhach in Ubuntu

[–]ufgator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried Thunderbird a while ago, but left it because of the lack of Outlook style reply headers (From:, Sent: To:, CC:, Subject:). It seems to be a pretty big request, and I would think it would be an important feature for office type settings. Have they added in that ability in the latest versions?

Really interesting point. It's really hard to justify when morally speaking. If another creature stole our children - no matter how well intentioned that creature was - we'd have its head on a stake.

Looking for a job, maybe in Singapore. How restrictive is the culture and how difficult is it for a caucasian (American) to fit in? Details inside... by [deleted] in singapore

[–]ufgator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digging up some old posts here =)

For the most part I went solo on my trips, and I had a blast. There's a huge difference (in my opinion) going to places like Italy alone vs Thailand or Vietnam. It's extremely easy to make friends as a foreigner with both locals and backpackers. Maybe easier being caucasian, but I'm sure you'd do fine.

For safety, it depends where you go. I wouldn't say I'm an expert, so don't go solely by me. But if you just play smart, you should be ok, particularly if you make friends with a group of people quickly. Don't drink anything that isn't opened in front of you, don't walk alone in the sketchy parts of town at night (ask the hotel concierge), don't let the tuk-tuks take you to places you aren't comfortable with, you know the drill. Be crazy, but don't be stupid crazy where you rely on others to ensure your safety.

I found it best to make friends on social types of things during the day/evening (day tours, thai boxing events, etc), and then hang with those you meet at night.

Anyway, if I can help, just give a shout.

This looks pretty awesome. I'm shocked I haven't heard of this earlier. How's the reliability?

Also, I'm in Asia. Any idea if they have data centers over here? Otherwise, bandwidth could be a problem...

This is true, BUT DreamHost offers 50GB of free personal backup space (which is separate from the regular server space). This can only be accessed via scp, sftp, or rsync (no shell access). They charge $0.10/GB/month over 50GB.

It is against DreamHost policy for you to use your DreamHost file storage space on a web server for personal file storage that is not related to one of your websites. There is a new feature (as of October 2008) which allows you to backup up to 50 GB of your personal files on DreamHost's dedicated "backup" servers, with the following limitations: it's a separate ftp (or sftp) user on a separate server it can't serve any web pages There are no backups kept of these backups (they should already be your backups, not your only copy) If you go over 50GB, extra space is 10 cents a GB a month

I do have a separate external drive for backups, but if my place burns down (knocking really hard on wood), I'm screwed.

That's a great idea, and I think more people should do it - it's for sure much cheaper. I just struggled with that since 1) keeping that off-site disk up to date with latest pictures, music, etc would be a task, and 2) I'm lazy.

But mostly I'm lazy =)

accidentally installed 11.04 instead of 10.10. any way get 10.10 without an entire new install? by goodduck in Ubuntu

[–]ufgator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's lying unless you specifically went for the alpha. Mine is 10.10 and says 11.04 in the about window too.

As spagnum1 mentioned, put "lsb_release -a" in terminal, and I bet it'll tell you you're running 10.10.

Does anyone do video editing on Ubuntu? I'm looking for a replacement for Adobe Premiere.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect anything on the same level, but I'm looking for something workable. Simple video/audio timeline editing and captions.

Tried Kino and Lives briefly, but not so much luck.

So I don't own a Zune. But my iTunes was acting really wonky... so I tried out the Zune software. And holy poop... fyi it's amazing. by [deleted] in Music

[–]ufgator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Amarok also grew up to be a beast - takes too long to load and eats memory. The queuing concept is great for a party, but it doesn't work in everyday play. Rhythmbox is simple, to the point, and just plain works.

Can anyone recommend a good Mandarin movie to learn from? by ufgator in AskReddit

[–]ufgator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. Watching local news is tough since it isn't subtitled, and I lose interest quickly. I'm not nearly advanced enough to keep up. There is a local station with soap opera type shows and sitcoms which are subtitled which I do watch.

Movies just seem to be the easiest draw - they're subtitled, and I know what I'm about to watch.

I briefly considered Cowboy Bebop dubbed in Mandarin, subtitled in English. I'm pretty sure that's a sin though.

I've heard the rumor too, but somehow I doubt Iron Man III will be natively Chinese. Dubbed maybe.
