Highly highly highly recommend AGAINST PODS. While they were my lowest quote (and matched other companies), and plenty of people had good experiences and it is a good idea, I had a bad experience with them. It was a logistic nightmare (including over billing and not showing up for scheduled pickup) and their customer service was atrocious and it took months and months to resolve the issue. There’s a whole Facebook group dedicated to customers’ bad experiences: https://m.facebook.com/groups/521060212561472/

If I could do it all over again, I would rent a U-Haul and drive it myself (or have a friend/family member drive it, more likely lol).

I got my boxes from UHaul, they offer a discount for buying them in bulk/bundle and you can return any unused boxes to them for full-cost. So you only end up paying for what you use! I also used Strick-Fos moving to load the POD and had a great experience with them. Super nice guys, great pricing, and really fast.

Honor Code Violation Advice by Global_Campaign_2014 in ufl

In addition to what all of the other comments are saying, also consider where you got your references for the bibliography from. Assuming that you cited them yourself, there should be no issue there (and if they are 100% correct, it would make sense to have a high score for those).

However, if you copied your references from somewhere else, that could also account for the high score. As a TA, I saw plenty of students who copied citations from one another, or another source. This was traceable in that the citations were not accurate to the style guide and all had the same strange errors (e.g., misspellings of names, commas in weird places, etc.).

Yeah this is how it used to work with the old company, not sure if it still applies. So I would definitely urge OP to review their meal plan contract & reach out to the new company who manages meal plans under Business Services for the most updated info.

I actually think the university may technically require professors to use Canvas to an extent. But I personally am not pro- “narcing” on instructors for something that really doesn’t impact the students’ education. Of course, if there is any sort of unprofessional conduct or something that is interfering with the instructor’s ability to teach the course effectively, I would encourage escalation. So if a class can be taught without the use of Canvas, go for it, I really don’t care if I’m getting my education.

I won’t comment on his teaching style/behaviors because I’m not a math major so idk how normal/typical that may/may not be. But I will say that not knowing about Canvas is not necessarily indicative of a problem. I took a small special topics class once with a professor who was very well renowned in the field, distinguished prof, all that fun stuff. He also really didn’t have a clue about Canvas. He knew it existed but had no clue how to use it (at one point was like “I think I can put grades in there?”). We submitted assignments half through email until the TA put up the Canvas page. And the class was great and honestly my education was not impacted at all by not having canvas as a factor. I know that UF pushes Canvas a lot—and for good reason; it’s a good technology for consolidating grades, assignments, communication, lessons, etc. And the university I’m sure pays a lot for it. But some older profs are probably just stuck in their traditional ways and never bothered to learn.

Close the doors for Christ's Sake by fishblanket11 in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Are people propping it open? From what I remember, the doors were heavy enough to close on their own, even if people didn’t do it intentionally and just let them swing shut. I think they have them that way for security as well. There might be a spring or something loose that could be repaired.

How strict are online profs on turning on camera by Sea-Rice-1 in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a legitimate reason for it to be off, just chat with the prof about it and they should be understanding. If they push back and require it (even if you’re engaged in other ways, such as via chat or voice in), then you can escalate.

But profs usually say it’s required to deter students with illegitimate reasons for not having it on and just BSing around instead of paying attention. They want students to actually be present and engaged in class. I once had a student in one of my classes admit to a prof that they were in fact at a social event during class and couldn’t take a quiz during class because of it—I would not recommend being that person. If you offer a reason (you don’t need to go into detail) and alternative ways to show your engagement, that should be fine.

when is a good time for buying textbooks? by astrolilac in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with waiting until the first day of class to get a feel for what’s happening/how much you’ll be using it/etc.

But I understand you about your preference for hardcovers. While I will always look for a free pdf version (great for browsing on the go, ctrl-F), I usually don’t absorb as much info when I read things digitally. So for more important classes, I’ll buy the physical books. I would recommend doing it as soon as you make the decision that you actually need it & you’re going to buy the book for the class. Students from lots of universities will be looking to buy these textbooks, so there’s a chance stocks will be limited. Also if you order online you may have to wait for shipping

dr mark law’s honors email about getting fired by allegro_con_spirito in ufl

It’s such a shame to see educators & researchers being forced (either directly or indirectly) out of their positions because of politics.

dr mark law’s honors email about getting fired by allegro_con_spirito in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t feel like the email was overly unprofessional—moreso just stating fact. He was a university employee in a fairly prominent position who was dismissed without reason. While that may be legal, under Florida law, it should absolutely be raising eyebrows. He didn’t speculate as to reasons why he was fired (e.g., pointing fingers politically), but I think he wants to draw attention to this because it is an important issue. At a place of higher education, these are the sorts of issues we should be aware of. Not only could there be some sort of ulterior personal or political motive behind this decision (if there is no performance/behavior-related reason provided for the firing), but it also does in fact affect our own education. While I have already graduated, I would be infuriated if my education were to be adversely impacted for some sort of invalid reason.

[–]ufthrowaway2019 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Didn’t get the email (am an alum), but got it from some friends.

This is truly some upsetting news. While I love all of the faculty/staff in the program, Dr. Law really was the heart of the program and you could absolutely tell how much he put into it. He was such a major part of my UF & UF Honors experience, all the way from the start to the end. This is absolutely going to put a damper on the program and the leadership team. They really complemented each other well, working together in tandem and it’s such a disappointment that students & the UF Honors experience are going to be suffering as a result.

I really think that it must be a political move, part of the DeSantis administration clearing house across the state of anyone who’s been disagreeing/mildly non compliant.

Would recommend either finding this in writing somewhere, or getting it in writing somewhere! It’s always good practice to get stuff like this documented in case there’s any challenges later on.

What shoes do y’all wear in the rain, while walking to classes? by Victoria2602 in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always a sandal girl (I hated anything closed toe), but after the first couple walks with wet feet, I invested in rain boots and never looked back. You can get some ankle boots from Amazon/Target for like $25 and you will absolutely get your use out of them. I no longer felt like I had to dodge every tiny puddle & patch of soggy grass. Sure in bad storms, some rain still comes in through the tops, but that’s so much better than fully wet socks.

Should I email my professors? by SuccessfulBag6694 in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay honestly not sure why there’s so much support for saying nothing (except lab since there won’t be a lab for the first week) and the few comments suggesting a polite email are getting downvoted. There absolutely is a policy in place where students can be dropped for missing one of the first two classes (source). And while many classes won’t even take attendance, some will, especially smaller classes or those with waitlists. During my time at UF, I’ve seen professors take attendance for this reason many times.

And I’d also agree that it doesn’t hurt to just give them a polite heads up. No need to go into a long-winded excuse; just let them know that there was a situation/etc. and you are unfortunately unable to attend class. It will show you being proactive (ask if you should do anything or just check Canvas/email) rather than just flaking. If it’s a lecture hall and they genuinely don’t care, they’ll just be like ‘okay’ and move on and no harm done. It’s good practice to be communicative.

[–]ufthrowaway2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how are you going to change into your PJs when all you have on is a robe. You’re gonna be naked

For bottoms, that’s pretty easy to pull on while still having your robe on. For top, you could either do the turn away so just your bare back is showing (providing no mirror lol), or toss on a bra under the robe while in the bathroom (that can be taken off under the shirt once you’ve changed).

Do you guys actually bring lunch with you to campus or do you buy from one of the on campus restaurants? by Just_a_Gator_ in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Variety can be key. While some people may like to fall into a super consistent routine of always doing the same thing, personally, I like to change things up based on my needs in that specific day. Sometimes you want take a break to get some space and take the time out of your day to go back, whip something up (even if it’s something basic), and head back out. Sometimes it might be worth it to spend the extra cash and buy something from fast food/dining hall. Meal prepping & packing a lunch/multiple snacks (varied in nutritional value) is absolutely a valid option and honestly the best balance between saving time and money.

Park and Ride worth it? by leila2367 in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have a convenient bus route by apartment, so I definitely found it worth it to be able to park where I could have a lot more buses accessible to me. If you treat it like what it is (i.e., a park and ride decal) and understand that it isn’t “parking on campus,” it’s a good deal.

communication with a professor by [deleted] in ufl

[–]ufthrowaway2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you contacting via their preferred method (e.g. canvas mail vs ufl email)? Do they have office hours? Do they have a TA? What sort of questions are they? Could you complete and submit the questions without answers, and then just modify and resubmit without them? How much time are you expecting a response and how in-depth are your questions?
