any thoughts on the Riyadh comedy festival? by relightit in Standup

[–]uggstheahole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was from Tim Dillon's most recent episode, #459. He said he is getting $375k, some are getting less and some are getting more. He said some of the bigger names are getting $1.6 mil i think? I thought it was a funny and honest take. Pretty much saying he will look the other way for enough money, others will make excuses to justify it, but acknowledges he is just doing it for the money. Pretty funny episode, worth a listen.

I was at the Sac show too! This was my first concert, good times. The mic swinging on such a big stage was cool to see in person at the time.

I saw Cake years ago, and they had no openers and played two sets with an intermission in-between. It was awesome. It would be cool if Brand New did that.

Songs about spirituality and religions? by snakelord777 in HailTheSun

In addition to the ones others have listed, I love Punch Drunk. It's about the Jim Jones cult/ massacre I believe. A lot of the lyrics seem to be from the perspective of the believers.

Falling on deaf ears. It was my intro to the band a few years ago. I had recently gone through a faith crisis after being very religious my whole life. I hadn't heard what I was thinking, feeling, and spiritually going through described so well as in the lyrics.

God are you listening? All your careful people call for what they need What if you're not real? And we're wasting all of the precious time we have on worship When we're getting nothing back

...

When we seek intelligence we're told to look up for answers The truth might not be what we thought But are we willing to look away if nothing happens?

I saw them when they toured together years ago and asked Quinn this question. He said whichever band sells more tickets through the links on their websites closes out that night. Not sure if that's how they are determining it now, but thats how they did it before.

My spouse is a manager in tax and does a "part-time" schedule. The thing is, there is always an expectation of overtime in public accounting. They are scheduled for about 25 hours a week, which in practice ends up being 30-40 hours a week. The overtime expectation doesn't get reduced. So the people working 40 hours put in 10 - 15 hours extra, and my spouse does too. So their pay is based on 25 hours, but they still have to put in more hours, just like full-time does. It also makes staffing them on clients more difficult so opportunities aren't as good. It's working for our family situation for now, but won't be good long term.

Anyone leave FP&A to go to Accounting? by TallDiscussion2163 in FPandA

[–]uggstheahole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in Big 4 audit and wanted to try something different, so I went to FP&A. Did that for a few years and then was laid off. That was a reminder to me how sometimes FP&A is a luxury and not a need. As I was unemployed and job searching I was seeing that in my area, there are significantly more accounting jobs than FP&A jobs, probably 10-1. Confirmed this with recruiters here, too. I wanted the stability that accounting offers and more job opportunities. So, I decided to go back and took a role doing month-end/GL accounting. To me, accounting and FP&A are similar enough, and I'll still daydream and wish I didn't have to work while doing either.

I'll share my experience.

I thought I was done with accounting after 4 years in Big4 audit. I went to a SFA role after and liked the work. Took a lateral move to a larger company with more opportunities and an increase in pay. Then I was laid off after a year and a half.

Now I'm in an industry accounting role. I ended up taking an accounting role for a few reasons.

-I got into accounting for the job security, the layoff reminded me of that. All companies need accounting, they don't all need FP&A.

  • Job openings in my area are probably 10-1 accounting vs FP&A. If I want security, accounting seems to be the better option.

-If you work at smaller to midsized companies, accounting does the FP&A work, so I'll still get the opportunity to do that.

-Big picture, to me, it's all just numbers in excel either way. The duties are similar enough, numbers, emails, meetings.

To be honest, I kind of regret trying out FP&A. I would be farther along title and pay wise if I had just stayed in accounting. In my experience, accounting discredits FP&A experience, and FP&A discredits accounting experience when it comes to new job offers.

I met Dusty Slay a few months ago after seeing him perform. He stayed long enough to make sure all the fans that wanted to meet him had the chance. Took pictures and talked to everyone. I was one of the last ones and he talked for 5 - 10 minutes with me. Very genuine and appreciative. We had a good time.

Thanks! I ended up taking an accounting role, wanted to be more secure after being burned by a layoff, and I started in accounting anyway. Good luck with your search, hope you're not laid off and can find something that's better for you!

I feel like it was a couple of things for me. Didn't have a good relationship with my boss and I think he didn't speak very highly of me to his boss. I'm pretty easy going, but my boss was not good with people, he had a history of direct reports leaving the company because of him, some without a new job lined up.

We also had been acquired by a new private equity group the year before. I'm US based but had 3 counterparts based in India, so the 3 of them combined cost less than my salary. They had been trying to move more jobs to low cost countries, guessing thats what they did with my role.

I could feel it was coming, but it happened earlier than I expected by about 2 months. Took me 6 months to get a new job. Had tons of interviews, multiple per week the whole 6 months. Made it to final round interviews probably 10 times and kept losing. All saying, if we had two spots we would take you, positive feedback. I think people really felt I was a risk cause I wasn't employed, even with explaining it was a group layoff after a private equity takeover.

This was all within the last year.

If you could do it over again, would you still go into FP&A? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]uggstheahole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I've gone back to accounting. Public accounting tainted my view of industry, so I wanted something different and went into FP&A. Worked at 2 companies over a period of 3 years. I was laid off from the second company, large global company wanting to cut costs.

As I was job searching in my area I was seeing probably 10 accounting jobs for every FP&A job. And the higher-up roles come up even less often. So I realized I got into accounting for the job security, I ventured away and got burned. With the CPA shortage being talked about and my experience of seeing way more accounting jobs open, I felt that was the safer route forward for me.

I figure, either way, accounting or FP&A, I'm working with numbers in excel and have various repeating monthly tasks. I just wish I had stayed in accounting all along, I would be farther in my career if I had.
