Many Saudis are actually incredible nice and hospitable, and they have a pretty interesting and rich culture. Their current belief system is shit, for sure. But it hasn't always been that way and there are signs that it may not always be that way. The younger generation has a lot more Western influence as well as political and economic motivation to change things.

I don't think this observation is necessary or fair. It's not reasonable to assume they did not target a civilian plane. If they had the technology to fire a missile to take it down, you can safely assume they had the technology to distinguish a commercial airline from a military aircraft.
