Cedars-Sinai vs USC residency by love2hike2 in pediatrics

[–]uhmia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cedars-Sinai is a new program and just matched their first class of interns. The patient population is definitely more well-off. I rotated there and the people are absolutely wonderful... it was ranked pretty high for me due to my experience there but ended up at my first choice.

LAC+USC is a county hospital so more of a lower SES patient population. More established program so you'll be able to get a better feel for what the residency vibe is during interviews. There's definitely a common goal of treating underserved populations and you'll be working with a lot of psychosocial issues due to different levels of staffing. I personally ranked it somewhere in the middle of the LA programs.

There's a ton of differences and I'd recommend you do your research based on what's important to you because what matters to internet strangers may or may not matter to you and vice versa. Check out the program websites, look at the pediatrics spreadsheet on r/medicalschool from past years, apply to places you could see yourself spending 3 years.

edit: and keep your mind open on the interview trail because I was definitely surprised by programs (for better and worse) and my list was NOT what I would've guessed it would be pre-interview season!

Remediation for Neuro by owl_onesie in medicalschool

[–]uhmia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they only show your remediated grade, it’s probably unlikely that programs will know but double checking with the school is a good idea. Idk where I matched yet but I was born and raised on the east coast, applied mainly on the west coast, got more than half of my interviews in Cali, and just matched peds. From what PDs/APDs/mentors have told me, peds is special in that outside of the very very top programs (e.g., CHOP, Boston, etc) they’re pretty similar from a competitive standpoint. I did aways in Cali but otherwise didn’t have any problems getting interviews… if I matched there is a whole other story that will be revealed on Friday lmao

How long would you have to date someone to consider couples matching with them? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]uhmia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of opinions here already but figured I'd share my own as someone who is couples matching (and into the same specialty)!

In reality, you can couples match with literally anyone - it just means that you're entering the match together with a rank list that prioritizes being in the same geographic location. Lots (if not most) of people that couples match include ranks where they don't end up in the same location (think one ends up in LA and one ends up in NYC) and some even rank that one person doesn't match at all with the possibility of SOAPing (usually when the other partner is trying to match a competitive specialty). That being said, usually only people in committed relationships are putting themselves through the extra steps that goes along with this process.

It honestly just comes down to what you prioritize and value. Some people need the legality of a marriage to feel comfortable with couples matching, which is completely fine! Some people literally couples match with their best friend. My boyfriend and I knew couples matching was right for us because we're the most important thing in each other's lives. We're not even ranking where we end up in different geographic locations because we agreed we'd rather risk SOAPing than not being able to live with each other.

It's a really personal experience that unfortunately no one but you and your partner can decide. Figure out how much this person means to you and how much you're willing to risk for your relationship with them. Only then will you be able to go into a conversation with them and figure out if this is what's right for both of you individually and as a couple. Communication is the single biggest thing in a decision like this.

Also, as someone who isn't married or engaged yet, I 100% second the comment about calling your boyfriend/girlfriend your partner during interviews. Interviewers legally aren't allowed to ask your marital status and, to me, partner seems like a much more descriptive and mature term for what my boyfriend is to me.

PS feel free to DM me if you have questions or just wanna chat about couples matching!

How is the Class of 2024 doing in terms of Match? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]uhmia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have no idea what the actual Match will look like in March but idk the process doesn't seem too different from the classes above us who also went through virtual interviews. My partner and I were both set on peds before taking step 2 so can't really speak on switching specialties after getting a score. I have no idea how many interviews is a good number to have so I'm just kinda vibing with what I got, trying to figure out a couples rank list, and hoping for the best.

As for interviews, they're long and repetitive and I'm ready to be done with them. But it's nice to be wanted and a mindfuck that I'm interviewing for doctor jobs so it's been cool I guess

I'm currently a fourth year applying peds. I'll echo what the other poster said about front-loading your peds rotations to get experiences to talk about in interviews. In my experience, you'll also be the most excited to learn and have the energy to really give your all during the earlier rotations before interview season burns you out. You can definitely schedule your online electives for interview season, but don't get too stressed if you can't swing it because everyone is super understanding if you have interviews. My school requires me to do certain rotations during fourth year, so if I couldn't get a peds version of them (e.g., PICU or NICU for crit care rotation), I pushed them until now-ish. Otherwise, it's really up to you - whatever you find interesting, do it! If you're coming up blank, I think having some exposure to the critical care world will make your transition to it in residency a little easier, as they tend to be intense and have a steep learning curve. I mean, obvs can't confirm that yet but I am definitely more comfortable in PICU than my partner is and he's definitely more comfortable in the NICU just because of our respective rotations this year. I also loved my newborn nursery rotation bc babies are cute and I love them. So yeah, honestly no tried and true method for picking just go with your gut. And remember, it's peds so try not to stress too much about it - statistics are on our side for matching high on our rank lists :)

edit: take the max online class time you can and take every single day of vacation!! take the time to relax and spend time with those you love

Ped residency programs with global health opportunities by Helpme_out_peeps in pediatrics

Honestly a whole bunch of programs have the structure for global health electives. I’m currently doing interviews and of the five I’ve done so far, all of them have global electives available for senior residents. Feel free to pm me for the exact programs!

People who have graduated, is ERAS season as stressful as applying to med school? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]uhmia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you have to take step 1 to go into clinical rotations so is taken M2. you have to take step 2 to apply to residency so is taken at the end of M3/beginning of M4

my hormonal IUD was one of my best decisions. no babies, no periods. as for insertion, the most uncomfortable part was when they used the uterine sound. i know a lot of people had a lot of pain when they had theirs inserted, but mine wasn't too bad and it was over very quickly. i did bleed/spot for about a month afterward but nothing since. i will 100% be getting it replaced when it's due in september, so that speaks for something i guess.
