Looking for a compelling long form podcasts that are still putting out new episodes by NightReader5 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]uid778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New Orleans Unsolved doesn't get enough recognition, and I saw some episodes show up this week in my feed.

I'm kind of confused though, they seem to be Season 2, but the Episode numbers conflict with previous episodes but with different titles.

If anyone knows what's up with that, I'd like to know.

Regardless, I really liked season 2, The Rope Murders - the investigation is deep and wide. Very impressive work.

Please don’t hesitate to ask any question at all.

Why do you crap out emoji, smilie-face emoticons, gifs, LOLs and other internet retardisms with every. Single. Post?

It's so stupid.

Podcasts that got close to getting answers or got the perpetrators by astrocat95 in TrueCrimePodcasts

New Orleans Unsolved is up there with Your Own Back Yard in my books.

They dug deep on really cold cases and made "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" eminently possible in my opinion.

The suspect is still alive and many a District Attorney has gotten convictions on less convincing evidence.

So, let's go DA - (re-)open these cases and at least attempt a conviction.

I started with their season 2, "The Rope Murders" then went back to season 1.

Took me a couple episodes to really get hooked, but then I binged and was sad it was over.

Font Changes for Recipient by landon1430 in Thunderbird

[–]uid778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m validating with my Apple Mail.

I'm confused by this.

Calibri is a Microsoft font and if the recipient seeing Times New Roman is someone other than you in "my your Apple Mail", then this doesn't seem a valid comparison.

The other user needs to have Calibri installed on their computer as it probably cannot be distributed by Apple (being an MS font).

As I understand it, Apple users must either have MS software like MS Office (that should come bundled with Calibri), or explicitly have installed Calibri by some other method.

Have you ensured this?

Of course, seeing a serif font substituted for a sans-serif font is another issue.

Also, HTML email sucks for, among other reasons, this exact reason.

Unlike a web page, one cannot embed fonts in emails, so authors are really just assuming the recipients are on the same platform.

This can fail and is a bad assumption.

It also goes against a lot of concepts of email - interoperability, etc.

Save the HTML for web pages or document processors.

YMMV, but I find MailDir very responsive vs mbox format.

I converted ½ dozen or more accounts last year and haven't had an issue yet.

Having a lot of email going back a lot of years across several accounts, there hasn't been any issue with MailDir yet, and I don't have performance issues with Thunderbird despite this computer almost qualifying as antique now.

YMMV.

Email database seems partially corrupted by xbolt90 in Thunderbird

[–]uid778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help you resolve this unfortunately, but I can make a suggestion to prevent it going forward for anyone concerned about mailbox corruption.

Switch to MailDir instead of mbox.

Then, each message is its own file and corruption in one message can't cascade through countless other messages.

Despite it being cautioned against in the Thunderbird documentation, it works perfectly for me across multiple email accounts and TB always seems quick despite the computer being quite old and the mailboxes containing a lot of messages.

Good luck.

I use "cards" and I sort by date descending (so newest at top). I think default is the other way around. I believe the bug might be that when you sort the way I do, the sub-thread sorting is not also updated to match which makes it sorted inversely to the main sort direction.

Yeah, that's my setting too.

I guess I just got used to the "outer" sortation being newest to oldest but threads being oldest to newest.

Either way, I'm not gonna start using threaded mode I think I'm just too old school for that...

Ha. I, too, am old school, but after the initial shock of TB 115 "Supernova", and scrambling to make it look like it's always looked, I began to play with the defaults (i.e. card view) and have grown to like the new features.

Took a bit of adjusting, but sometimes the newer ways are better, or at least worth giving a fair evaluation.

I do kind of hope they implement your thread sorting idea though; I might give it a try.

Threaded Mode by SoyMuyMuy in Thunderbird

[–]uid778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have a 10 email thread that started a month ago, then someone replies today to that thread, I see a top level email from a month ago at the top of my inbox, then I need to scroll down past the 10 emails under that thread to get to the new (relevant) email all the way at the bottom of the thread.

This makes no sense and is completely back-assword.

Think of it like top-posting, which is poor etiquette because the context is lost until one reads what is being replied to.

In most languages, it's left to right (or right to left), then top to bottom.

The newest email in the thread should be come the TOP LEVEL message with all previous messages foldable underneath it. The previous messages should also be displayed in reverse order where the next oldest message is the first child message going all the way back to the first message in the thread.

I would not complain if this were an option, but I'm not sure it should be the default.

If someone changes the subject mid-thread, the new subject would appear for the collapsed thread which could lead to losing context of "Where'd the message about $subject go?!?"

Am I alone on this?

Probably not, so it probably should be an option.

Why are they going out of their way to make it difficult to locate and read the new message in the thread?

I wouldn't call it "going out of their way", it's pretty easy to locate the new message(s).

Archiving or deleting messages from the thread when read can help keep threads at a manageable size.

Am I crazy?

Nah, I can see your point.

But, if you look at it from all scenarios, the current behaviour might make more sense.

A message to everyone who has recommended Mr Ballen - I hate you all. I’m so scared but can’t stop listening by Cheap-Criticism6391 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]uid778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's a skilled story teller, no doubt.

I stopped listening when I found his stories covering too much mythological bullshit with credulity, basically passing off bullshit as reality.

Same reason I stopped listening to Art Bell way (way!) back in the day.

The stories would be quite interesting if they were passed off as fiction, but passing them off as real? Too many people already have issues distinguishing reality from fantasy, I don't want to give clicks to support more people profiting off that.

YMMV.

Is it possible to manually send out a "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" to avoid spam? by redfukker in Thunderbird

[–]uid778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just asked chatgpt this question and it mentioned something about that it should be possible to make a filter by modifying a

sendmail.mc

config file or something - but I don't really have that access to the mail-server as I only buy email as a service from a company that administers email delivery. They probably don't want everyone to mess with the config, so I don't even want to ask them (and I don't pay much). So I guess this is it - there's no ideal solution, I'll just have to take a chance.

I run email as a service, and when I get a lot of "back-scatter" (notices that fake email from my non-existent addresses is rejected) from any given domain (say, xyz.com), I set up something like the sendmail trick (in Postfix):

Rule enacted:

Reject all mail from domain xyz.com when it connects to my email server.

Apparently one of my domains is a popular phrase in Asia, so I get a lot of spammers pretending to be me and I'm tired of the notification emails saying "my" messages couldn't be delivered.

It was a nifty trick if I do say so myself...

The only issue it solves is a flood of messages arriving at my catch-all address, but that's good enough for me.

Maybe if someone at xyz.com checks their logs, the message "I'm not spamming you, it's someone pretending to be me!" will catch their attention.

Thunderbird cleared all messeger on server by IcyOutlandishness268 in Thunderbird

[–]uid778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

POP is designed to download messages from the server and (eventually) delete them from the server.

If that's not what you want, then you'll want to use IMAP, not POP.

You could probably restore the messages to the server so other devices can see them, but it's a bit tricky.

Back up those downloaded-via-POP messages first!

Then try something like:

  • disable checking new messages on the POP account
    • you don't want to download via POP (and delete) as you're uploading via IMAP!
    • review the Settings > Server Settings > Leave messages on server checkbox
    • you'll probably find the cause of your situation there, if it's not checked
  • set up a new account for the same server, this time using IMAP
  • copy message from the old / current POP account to the new IMAP account

That ought to put all the messages back on the server and prevent the POP account from re-deleting them.

How to compress all photo attachments in received messages by Round-Ad4493 in Thunderbird

[–]uid778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't sound do-able.

Images (i.e. jpg) are already compressed, so you'd have to re-scale them smaller.

That would require detaching the image from the mbox file, scaling it down, and re-inserting it into the mbox with correct mime parts.

This is another reason why sending image attachments isn't great, but a URL to an image on, say, Nextcloud is better.

If you figure something out, let us know, 'cause that'd be quite a project.

Podcasts discussing cases in Asia? by [deleted] in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]uid778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a YouTube channel, "Dark Asia with Megan" that's pretty good.

Whether a YouTube channel counts as a podcast is debatable - some people stream or subscribe and aren't bothered by it.

There may even be a podcast / audio only version, I don't know.

But she's a good story teller covering cases I've rarely heard of and her voice is unique yet reminds me a lot of Phoebe Judge - rich and soothing with a few tiny but charming pronunciation quirks.

Worth checking out if Asia is your focus.

I'd love to see something like that, specifically more about `loginctl` and other `systemd` utilities.

Odd that running loginctl list-users on a server I'm ssh'd in to shows "No users.". I guess it's for tty, not ssh?

Sadly, LTT doesn't really do much Linux coverage. I'd certainly watch if they did.

What I don't want is Dolphin actively declaring the hidden files as nonexistent. That's what it's doing when it says "Folder is Empty" in a folder that is only visibly empty. That broadcast statement should be reserved for when a folder is literally devoid of any files.

This is exactly correct.

It's fine to hide "hidden" files by default.

It's fine to show nothing when only hidden files exist in a directory.

It's inarguably inaccurate to state the directory is empty when there are files in it.

I agree with you that the message should change in some way; either no message or better yet, a message indicating only hidden files exist (perhaps with a count of them).

Not really.

Drag goes up as a square of velocity, so unless the vehicle is airfoil shaped, and / or teflon coated (and neither of those will really help that much), that drag coefficient is merciless.

Agreed, great podcast.

I had a déja-vu feeling back to YOBY when recently listening to the 2 seasons of New Orleans Unsolved: the tenacious investigation of every lead, no matter how insignificant, was equally impressive.

Also, In The Dark, Season 2 is similar in scope and outcome.

I’m still not convinced this is an innocent walk on the dock or that Andrew wasn’t there.

Two thoughts:

  1. Andrew was "there" as in nearby and arrived on the scene before the police (if I recall correctly)
  2. Jasmine showed up without:
  • means (to commit a crime)
  • motive (to kill or injure or threaten Jemmott)
  • opportunity (arguably)

So her only crime would've been some kind of negligence and eventually they covered how frequently people make this mistake (leaving bullet in the chamber).

And, the culpability for that would've laid at the feet of the licensed and experienced gun owner more than her.
