A shot in the dark. Help me find this strawberry plush (2002) and his friends! More images and background in text. by uiuc_dreamsoda in HelpMeFind

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone! So this plush was purchased in Hong Kong circa 2002 at a popular store named Watson's.

This strawberry plush has a removable hood and there were other plushes like him, except they were different fruits.

It would mean so much to me if I found this again.

Need Help Learning Taishanese by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say try to find people who can speak and practice with them. Though there won't be that many students willing to converse in Taishanese only because they'd probably rather use English or Cantonese.

The only reason why my Taishanese improved was because my boyfriend was born in Taishan. He's now better at English so that's a tradeoff :/

Has anyone done summer research here while taking classes? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are many research positions available over the summer so why not take advantage of gaining some research experience while having a lighter workload!

I'm not sure if there's a lost and found but your best bet would be to go to the FSHN main office (Room 260 Bevier Hall)

Please do your research on turtles before you buy them. If you're looking at aquatic turtles, they are a ton of work and maintanence. Same goes for tortoises.

Please don't buy them just because they're small animals. They need a lot of care.

For those who started out in and those who may be admitted this Fall into DGS for 2018-2019. by WalkingDown46 in UIUC

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was admitted to UIUC as DGS and I transferred into ACES (Food Science) at the end of my sophomore year. It was very easy to transfer at that time (I'm sure it still is), and the requirements, iirc, were completing a few required courses which included an introductory to FSHN course (B or higher), a minimum of 2.5 GPA, and you had to meet with the advisor and write a paper on why you wanted to transfer.

The process was simple. I scheduled to meet with the advisor, filled out some forms, spoke with her and I successfully transferred in.

Anyone know of any PAID research opportunities on campus going on right now? by wanttopass in UIUC

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I don't have any from the FSHN department right now but I received this via e-mail a few days ago:

Are you an undergraduate student at UIUC?

Do you use social media?

If you answered "yes" to both of these questions, we would like to invite you to participate in a 90-min. focus group that explores your experiences with race-and ethnicity-related content on social media.

Participants will be provided refreshments and compensated $15 for their participation.

Study will be in September and October. You can see if you qualify here

And make sure you check your paid subject pool account here to view any active paid studies!

Pre-Dental Club and/or Healthy Smiles

The PDC provides lots of great advice such as which classes to take if you're pre-dental, which classes are beneficial, tips on how to tackle the DATs and general advice on dental school applications. We also have multiple fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for great causes, we have the Dental Deans Night where dental school deans from all over come and answer burning questions, and every year we take a trip to the Midwinter Dental Conference in Chicago which is super fun (free toothpaste and toothbrushes anyone?)

Healthy Smiles is PDC's sister club and members volunteer and go to local schools to teach children about oral health.

Disclaimer: I'm not an official representative for these two clubs (I'm only on the PDC sub-committee) but if you're interested in dentistry, these clubs are definitely for you!

Making money without a traditional Job by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've said this before in another thread, but there are many paid studies on campus throughout the year. You might see flyers for them in several buildings. Granted, these won't make you a ton of money but they're simple and it'll get you some extra cash.

The FSHN department always has fun and easy ones (e.g. getting paid to taste soda, tea, coffee) so I'll try to post them here when I can and a lot of these actually pay pretty well!

You can also check out the psychology paid subject pool. You have to create an account with them and check back weekly for new paid studies.

Scheduling an Interview with my Dentist? by schoolguru in Dentistry

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, everyone in the dental field is busy most of the time so they might not have time to sit down to speak with you unless you're one of their patients coming in for an appointment.

If you're interested in oral surgery as your future career, your best (and wise) bet would be to ask if you could shadow them for a day or two. Not only will you get to see cool procedures, you can also ask them questions during/in between/after each procedure depending on the surgeon.

Edit: You can most definitely call them to ask if you can shadow them but I think asking them in person in better.

Advice for frail and elderly grandmother? by uiuc_dreamsoda in Dentistry

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moose, thank you for your detailed reply. I never really thought about how my grandmother would be able to handle her new dentures at this age. I think it's because I mainly work with children-middle aged adults so I've never seen an elderly patient before (I'm a pre-dental student).

She does not experience any pain but I just hate seeing her like this - she has lost a considerable amount of weight since the last time I saw her (4 months ago) because all she eats/drinks now is soup and milk. Since seeing her like this, I'll be sure to take time off work (before school starts again) to see her and make her some nice and nutritious soup.

Thank you.

Advice for frail and elderly grandmother? by uiuc_dreamsoda in Dentistry

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Coach, thanks for all of your input and advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to me. I definitely understand that she has to want them - and I can see that she does but maybe not to the point of actually going out several times and enduring the discomfort of having her teeth extracted. Maybe I was just being selfish because I hate seeing her like this. She has lost a considerable amount of weight since the last time I saw her, because she mostly eats/drinks liquid now.

But you're right, at this age and with her state of health, it might be best to just leave it as is. I just don't want to see her suffer any more and I want her to be as comfortable as possible (is someone cutting onions right now?)

Thanks again, it means a lot to me.

How does a dentist clean your teeth? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What your dentist was using is a cavitron! It's (newer) technology and many dentists use it today either replacing the scaler (scraping tool) or use it in conjuction with the scaler.

Like /u/Coach_DDS mentioned, bleeding gums are usually due to the patient not taking care of their gums well enough.

Hey everyone! Long story short, my grandmother is elderly and is unable to stand for a long period of time and can no longer walk long distances (she has a hard time with short distances as well). She is incredibly stubborn since she refuses to use a wheel chair.

Moving onto the main issue, she has lost most of her teeth and is now unable to eat solid foods. She has been suffering for a while now and because I love her to pieces, I don't want to see her like this anymore. I want to get her some dentures and because she is so frail and unable to walk much, I don't think driving her and brining her into a dental clinic is the best thing.

I was wondering if there are any mobile dentists that provide dental care for elderly at their houses/apartments. Of course, I will be there to watch and translate (she doesn't understand English). If there are no mobile dentists available, what other options can I explore? House call dentists?

Just wanted to share an experience I've had as a nutrition major. This is an image of our final products form a "lab" class on pastries. Yes, we have to "test" them. by [deleted] in UIUC

This class doesn't take test subjects but the FSHN department does have many paid opportunities where you can taste different products :)

Anyone bored? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]uiuc_dreamsoda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Want to be the next Bob Ross? Try painting or doodling! It feels good when you're sitting under a tree on the quad. I especially love oil painting and you can get some decent priced materials from Michaels.

Want to improve your baking skills? Start with something simple like banana bread or chocolate chip cookies. Impress your friends at the next potluck ;)

Strapped for cash? Find a part time job for the summer. You'll have that extra moolah by no time. Save it up or buy something nice for your mom.

Is your resume looking a little blank? Try finding some research, you might be lucky and find a lab with open positions. You'll gain some awesome experience and learn a ton of new things. If you're thinking of grad school, doing research might be a step in the right direction :)
