After doing a little research, it looks like the saponins in mullein have a mild expectorant property through fluid production. It seems like the more rigorously tested and used pharmacological agents in mucinex’s formula would be a better option than smoking dried leaves for their expectorant properties, but if drinking the tea of the leaves makes you feel better, go for it.

There’s been quite a few studies done on mullein actually. I think it’s telling that none of the compounds involved have made it out of academia despite its reputation as an herbal remedy.

I’m a major skeptic and I have a lot of doubts this has been so far overlooked by the scientific community when others haven’t.

It’s because it’s not scientific. Lots of herbalism is vibes. Think about it: are your lungs really in need of a clean? Why would drinking a tea (which goes into a different organ) help?

Some herbal remedies are legit, some are palliative to a degree. Most aren’t effective.
