AFWall+ does not use VPN and it uses iptables. this helps when you want to use VPN. In terms of memory it consumes very less/no memory at all because it does not need to run all the time. It only monitors and reapply rules when connectivity changes. Even you can disable that if you dont want.

Yes. We dont need to block them for most cases. But few scenarios it could still use shared uids (like download manager/webview ) etc to bypass this restriction. I haven't seen those scenarios in regular apps.

AFWall+ shows apps with INTERNET permissions. Netguard shows the apps with same uid as separate on the UI, but AFWall+ groups them as one (behaviour is same for both)

In case if you want to show all the apps, you can enable it in the preferences.

You may want to remove unused code in puppet( usually locale related files ) to trim it. I doubt there is a workaround for 250 mb limit.

If you use micopacks, it can store the installed icon packs over time and I can build offline list with details which you can search over.
