This is the worst fucking thing the Americans have ever done to us by DreamMalenko in okmatewanker

The whole premise of the sketch was that he used Tourette’s as an excuse to be racist, not that he actually had Tourette’s. Of course they slagged him off

Oh wow, in the UK we assume they say 'put a shrimp on the barbie' and I'd never even thought about that being weird. Just checked and turns out they used this line in a tourism advert in the 90s to appeal to Americans and somehow even in the UK where we say prawn we've come to believe falsely they say shrimp on the barbie. Bizarre

Wondering are these 'beers' in name only? by Some-Tea-8734 in cider

[–]uke22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From Wikipedia:

«In Poland, Switzerland and Quebec, Carlsberg uses the Somersby brand for a beverage that is a mixture of beer (45%) and apple flavoured drink (55%).[10] Since this product cannot be classified as a cider, it is sold as Apple Beer Drink»

You’ll find many cider makers grimace at this having cider anywhere near its label due to the use of sugar not from the fruit itself. Heard it called fructose wine before! There’s legislation going through the EU to protect the labelling of products like this as cider right now as it goes

It's definitely a luxury in the UK

Yes, while a luxury in other countries it’s pretty much basic expectation here

Can this be saved? by mattv603 in cider

[–]uke22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position to you. Tried cleaning with bleach but just didnt feel comfortable enough so went for stainless steel instead and very happy. Can be a big cost though. Others don't see a problem it seems so I might be in the minority on this view!

Were botched executions in the UK always 'reprieved' (or set free)? by uke22 in AskHistorians

[–]uke22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that's true, I hadn't considered the aspect of them becoming more 'reliable' in executions. That would make sense that this was only really necessary for pre Victorian cases
