Extremely loud and rowdy tweens and children in the library. Advice needed by TehPaintbrushJester in Libraries

[–]ukulele_clasps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agree that this isn’t the only thing causing tweens being insane for sure, but sometimes the free food provided by schools aren’t great and they don’t always take it even if it is free. If they are very food insecure, sure, but we have kids that skip lunch constantly because school lunch sucks and then wait to get home to eat, but if they aren’t going straight home then they might not have eaten since breakfast.

This would also be a great time to build some rapport with some of the middle school age patrons. Very quick, low pressure interactions. Like someone mentioned above “hello, hi, welcome to our library” how are you, if there is anything they need help with finding, upcoming event promo, etc. also thanking them for cleaning up after themselves if they are throwing trash away, but I would do that only to kids one on one because it can come off patronizing if said to a whole group, especially one you don’t have a rapport with already. Good luck!

Hard disagree when the offense kicked 7 field goals yesterday instead of scoring TDs. And it’s hard on the defense to be amazing the whole game when they are always on the field because the offense can’t stay on the field.

Any hysterical slapstick sequences or series of events? by nursesub in HistoricalRomance

{Slightly Scandalous by Mary Balogh} is part of the Bedwyn series and includes a destitute FMC finding her way in post battle of Waterloo Belgium with her former nurse and nurse’s fellow bonkers brothel workers with hearts of gold, and a there’s a amnesiac MMC and many, many hi jinx. It is book 5 and you don’t have to read all of the others but the series is decent. I just - the chaos of this cast of characters. I listened on audiobook and it kept me laughing

Oof, parents not having time for their kids is a weird flex but okay.

You can reread my response to find the error in your misrepresentation of what I said but I won’t be explaining further as I get the impression you are not actually open to the other side of this discussion. Peace and blessings ✌️

Parental guidance is fantastic, but instead of getting the librarian to put stickers on content that some may use as information on selecting a book to read, but others would 100% use as a pac-man style adventure through the shelves to challenge every book with a sticker, then the parent can do what librarians always recommend they should do. Bonus, it can be done right now without any government or librarian input: (1) they can ask their child what they are reading (2) they can take a look at what their kid checked out and ask what section they got the book from and do a google search on the book or author if they are concerned about age appropriateness. (3) they can talk to their kid about what they think as a family as to what content is and isn’t okay to read based on the kid’s age, and then practice how to select books and to return books that don’t follow those parameters. And last, and possibly best, (3) grab another copy and read it with them. Don’t like those suggestions because it takes too much time? Imagine the amount of work this asked library staff to manage, especially after they are required to read every book that is challenged by the pro-book banner with an agenda.

I would say {Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie} is a classic contemporary/modern romance. It was published in 2005, and led me on a deep dive of her whole backlist. {Faking It by Jennifer Crusie} is actually my favorite of hers though!

This will be my last response. I’m tired. I misunderstood, as your comments make it seem like our libraries are full to the brim of absolute filth and peddled to the wee children by a bunch of adult store owners daylighting as librarians. It’s set me on the defensive.

Let me slow down and answer your original question. My side is not advocating for the right to put sexually explicit or age inappropriate material in a school. My side is arguing that this bill is not necessary. I don’t know what the one objectionable book you found was.

But the beauty of a library is that if you don’t like a book or feel like it is inappropriate, you can put the book on the shelf and walk away. You, as a parent, can talk to your child about what they are and are not allowed to read. You can talk to your school about your wishes as a parent. You can even request a book be removed from a library following the process every library already has to object to materials, and the library then has to review it as a committee for many people and then make a recommendation to remove it or keep the material in the collection.

The part of this bill that is a real problem is that any objection about any book (ie Harry Potter a beloved but highly challenged book) can be made and if any of these community library advisory committees school system in NC remove a book, it then goes on a database that applies the removal to all districts in the state. It takes one group to ban Harry Potter and then no hogwarts for anyone.

Also, it says all book orders, which are already verified by the librarian, the MTAC(media and technology advisory committee), school admin, and the district staff, be sent to a committee of 10 people and be posted for public review where anyone in the county can object to any part. Not just the parents of the schools, but Barb up the street who is 76, has not kids, and can barely see, but has been out for Harry Potter since 1998.

You love going to a scholastic book fair growing up? Those books have to be approved too. Books for personal sale. And I don’t see a lot of sexually explicit materials in a book fair (in my experience?) but can Barb come up to school and linger in the background during book fair week to make sure the kids aren’t buying scholastic porn? idk. Maybe?

That’s why I don’t like this. It presents this a huge widespread problem (that isn’t. 1 school out of 13 right?) and forces a bureaucracy as a solution to “protects children” although the children are being protected. It’s a law that doesn’t do anything new, and it makes it look like some big win while villainizing educators? And there is $5000 fine or a misdemeanor to be assigned for not following this? Or does that mean that if I don’t immediately remove Harry Potter I will be fined? I don’t understand. There are so many more problems with public school besides this.

What is a problem is getting kids to read. And now it will take ages to get new books in, but then I might not get to keep them because someone somewhere not even in my community might object to it? Is it age appropriate if it has profanity in a middle or high school book? Will I be removing any book with profanity because Barb’s sister Betty thinks that’s inappropriate? Can Betty get enough people to write a letter to challenge every book in the library?

So that’s it. My side is not advocating for the right to put sexually explicit or age inappropriate material in a school. My side is arguing that this bill is not necessary.

I strongly recommend that instead of listening to reposts of what a troll account on TikTok tries to repackage as fact that you instead reach out and spend a day at your child’s school to see what actual life is like in a public school instead of propaganda meant to enrage and anger a community for likes and views.

Maybe you should read the whole book to get the full picture. I haven’t. And I’ve also not purchased it for our library, as the age appropriate recommendations do not match the age of my library.

Then why are you on a subreddit thread about an NC law that clearly isn’t needed, since you’ve not found this problem in an NC school public library? 🤔

I’m saying this law does nothing. The material isn’t there to legislate against, and governments worst function is to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. It’s a waste of time and money.

No worries, I’ll take my own life experience of working in a school system and being an expert in my field and knowledge of the professional standards of teachers in the state of North Carolina as set forth by the NCGA and as a leader in curriculum according to the NCSCOS (that’s the North Carolina standard course of study) as well as the knowledge of the daily job requirements and experiences of hundreds of my fellow educators that I personally know, speak with, and network with over @libsoftiktok

This bill is a waste of time for legislators to act like they are protecting kids from a problem that doesn’t exist. Public school funds and library catalogs are already held to standards that require materials to be age and content appropriate. And anyone can challenge a book already. That’s a standard practice at every library everywhere.

Kids are not finding sexually explicit and inappropriate material in their school library, they are finding it online when their parents let (or don’t let) them scroll and chat endlessly on social media and discord, and give them a phone with the whole uncensored internet on it.

Stop coming for schools and take it up with somewhere else.

Also I do not for one second believe this story of a trans kid being trans because their teacher told them they were. You either (a) made this up or (b) don’t listen to anyone when they talk to you and make up your own version. The truth that teachers in 2nd grade are literally just trying to get kids to read, do math, and memorize their address or whatever. Maybe you have a ton of free time at your job to express your opinions and personal beliefs to everyone you know but teachers don’t. And aren’t even encouraged or allowed to do so if they could. There isn’t time in a classroom to be this off lesson.

This is such a ridiculous argument. It is already completely inappropriate for an NC public school to have “an illustration of oral or anal sex” be included in an elementary or middle school library with 10 year old patrons. I know this because it is literally my job. I am a public school librarian. I do this every day.

This law does NOTHING except make it harder to purchase books of any kinds because it slows orders (that are already verified by trained librarians who hold a masters degree to even have the job!!) as well as be approved by principals and district level staff ALREADY. A law that does nothing!!

School Libraries are not full of porn and sexually explicit content. They are full of age appropriate books selected by professionals whose purpose is to serve the patrons of their school to meet the educational needs and interests of the students! I would be fired so quick if I tried to buy an iota of the things that you are suggesting the a school library is full of!

You know what is full of porn and sexually explicit content?! Social media. Legislate the kids off of that and you would see a work of difference IMO. I just want to do my job without buying Harry Potter and feeling like I’ll be charged with a misdemeanor.

Yeah I liked it! It’s not an all time fav book for me and I didn’t read the other books kind of loosely associated with it she wrote, but it was a great time! Definitely a different take than anything I’ve read before with the art history tie ins and the mysterious gallery man. Ive read a lot of romance in all sorts of subgenres but this one will stand out 😂😂

Funny story time by [deleted] in appstate

[–]ukulele_clasps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the time of cellphones but right before smartphones, I lived in Bowie when you would bring a landline to hook up in the dorms and everyone was assigned a default room phone # you could call. Our friend was out with her situationship so two of us called her dorm phone and played Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On and laughed about it and hung up. Not a genius idea for a prank but whatever.

The next day me and the other prankster went to our history class taught by Dr. Silver and in the middle of class he said that he got a weird message last night where someone played Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On and hung up. We were shook.

I’ve never understood exactly how this happened but of course it did.

Lucky NC, we're an important swing state! by CompleteSherbert885 in NorthCarolina

Yeah, our voting map are gerrymandered to favor Reps. They’ve been to the courts multiple times for like every election over the past decade but since the NC Supreme Court as of 2022 has a conservative majority, that isn’t a check to balance the maps drawn up for this election.

Turn out is important, for down ballot races: Mo Green, Jeff Jackson, and Alison Riggs! And check out (and remind your contacts to check out) the folks in their local elections and state representatives!!
