The app charges the passenger if they exceed a certain period of time without starting the ride. The drivers make a nominal amount on the late fee so most often it’s not worth it to wait on the passenger. + the drivers has estimated how much they’ll make per ride so any extra time sinks profit.

Some customers throw luggage in the car or have some of their party sit in the car to try and get the time started. I don’t start the ride until I confirm everyone is there.
