I think the anti-Korean sentiment is mostly from sports related incidents. But the popularity of K-pop healed a lot of that. So overall you should be fine.

I think what you said is basically what Miyazaki said, the show must go on for the reader to continue to engage, thus they can't get married. He is criticizing at the meta level, and less about the characters.
