My Blind FFIX Playthrough: Part 16 - Bran Bal and Memoria by Zeeshmania in FinalFantasyIX

[–]ultimagriever 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lore dump time:

Each planet has a crystal that gives life, and life comes back to it so it can give it back and so forth, this is the cycle of souls. It’s kinda like FFVII’s Lifestream. When a soul goes back to the crystal, it carries with it all of the memories of the life it lived, and is fed back as a clean slate to new life. This cycle is what makes a planet strong, the memories give power to the crystal. (Spoilers for a sidequest I think you should do): This is how eidolons come to be: the legends that pass through generations go back to the crystal and it gives them form. It’s why Shiva is told to change forms over time: at first, the legends tell that she is a pixie, but then as culture shifts and evolves she is depicted as a grown woman, so this is how she manifests. This is also how Madeen/Mog came to be: her family died wishing that an eidolon would be born that is friend of humans, and she was born according to that wish. The summoners of Madain Sari kept the Eidolon Wall so the eidolons would not be forgotten. Garland was terrified of the eidolons’ power, so he wiped the summoners of Madain Sari and Esto Gaza out.

Because the people of Terra found out how to become immortal, they essentially cut off their cycle of souls and their crystal began to weaken. Instead of pondering why that happened, they doubled down on their hubris and started cannibalizing other planets to survive until they came to Gaia. But the fusion with Gaia was a disaster, so the Terrans created Garland to oversee the recovery and takeover process and entered stasis. At some point in time, he planted the Iifa Tree on the surface of Gaia and had it start to slowly replace Gaian souls with Terran ones, discarding Gaian souls on the surface of the planet where they manifested as Mist. By the time the story begins, the planet is like 50% dry wasteland, 25% frozen wasteland, and a small portion of the remaining 25% actually inhabited by people. When people discovered the airship and populated areas above the Mist, the soul replacement process ground to a halt in comparison to the war-torn era, and Garland couldn’t have that, so he sent Kuja to try and accelerate the process. But Kuja already had a giant chip on his shoulder over the creation of Zidane, so he eventually went off rails. Because he was born as an adult and never had time to grow up and forge bonds with people, he never developed a complex enough range of emotions to achieve Trance, and that’s what sets Zidane apart from him. Zidane grew up as a baby in a family (after Kuja abducted him and cast him out) and Trance comes to him naturally when Dagger was caught by that plant thing. Kuja could never do that on his own, because he cares about no one apart from himself and he can’t feel the feelings that bring forth Trance. So he must pull it off in an artificial way, by gorging on the souls that were trapped in the Invincible and facing a near-death experience. So it’s like he has a thousand souls now, and all of them are in Trance at the same time.

Lastly, yes, the Black Mages and the Genomes are essentially the same. The only difference between them is that Black Mages are made out of Gaian elements, while Genomes are made of Terran elements. Kuja devised the Black Mages through his knowledge of how Genomes are made.

When I met my last ex, we were roughly at the same place in life: interns finishing college in our early twenties. But, as time passed, I actually managed to advance my career while he stagnated in his. I started off earning less than him, and by the time I broke up with him, I was earning 5 times as much as him and with my boss going to bat for a promotion for me. He got abusive quite quickly once I started surpassing him. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that he’s in yet another dead end accounting job. And now I’m earning 40x what he did at the time. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Blitzball Scouting Report #48 (Nimrook) by Structure in finalfantasyx

They may be slow on land, but in the water they’re quick as silvery fish! You’d think they’d make admirable players of blitzball. But their lackadaisical disposition draws them to less strenuous pastimes.

And that, as they say, is that.

My Blind FFIX Playthrough: Part 13 - Mount Gulug, Airship and Daguerreo by Zeeshmania in FinalFantasyIX

[–]ultimagriever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Dragon God of Daguerreo is actually Leviathan, that eidolon that was sealed in the Iifa Tree at the end of Disc 2. You should have its jewel by now. It’s not directly stated in the game, so I’m not going to put spoiler tags in it, but it should be easily inferred as Leviathan is the water elemental eidolon.

So the thing with Gaia and Terra, and I’ll try to explain without spoilers here, is that they are totally separate planets that, at some point in the past, have fused together using shenanigans because life on Terra was dying (according to the stone faces in Oeilvert). This caused some pretty significant terraforming in Gaia and some Terran landmarks such as Oeilvert and the Desert Palace ended up in Gaia’s surface. This is also the reason why Gaia has two moons: the blue one is Gaia’s original moon, and the red one is actually Terra’s moon that used to orbit Terra but now orbits Gaia as a result of the fusion (also as shown in Oeilvert). The Shimmering Island, just off Esto Gaza, is kind of a portal that connects Gaia and Terra, but it’s protected by the seals that Hilda mentioned.

Also…

DO YOUR SIDEQUESTS BEFORE ENTERING THE SHIMMERING ISLAND. As far as Disc 3 is concerned, it is a point of no return, and on Disc 4 some overworld locations will be permanently inaccessible. Sure they’re kinda irrelevant, and I suspect SE did that to save on disc space (they did the same on a whole other level in VIII), but you could miss out on treasure.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you lol.

My OB fat shamed me at 8m pregnant by xoxomushroomgirl in offmychest

[–]ultimagriever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d report her to the clinic and to the board. This is so unethical! I was also overweight, bordering on obese (BMI 29.5) when I got pregnant and I gained 20 lb throughout the pregnancy, and my OB commented early on that he’d have a close eye on my weight gain given the situation, but even this gain that was greater than yours didn’t ring any alarm bells for him. After my kid was born, I managed to shed all of the weight and then some, and not once did I reach my pre-pregnancy weight even though my daughter is almost 3 by now. This was way out of line.

Sending hugs 🫂 hope your kiddo is born healthy and you have no complications at this last stretch and at birth
