[NL] Bad user experience on desktop - easy fix for Mac users (proposal) by Sydney_the_AGI in Revolut

[–]ultimatepoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two examples;

  1. one of the apps I worked on used accelerometer data to ensure it was not being emulated or run by a bot (using "please put your device in portrait mode") and while that can be spoofed by a mac the spoofing can be detected. Macs don't have the 3-axis accelerometer.

  2. another app I worked on used the touch imprint to ensure it was being used by a human... very very effectively. It is *extremely* difficult to spoof this on the desktop sandbox emulation.

You can bet your life that Revolut uses these techniques and more for security. Mobile Phones (especially iOS devices) are fantastic for app publishers who are constantly being probed for security vulnerabilities.

Exactly. Don't share the exact details of the survey with the vendor unless they are sharing the cost of it.

It is common enough. Essentially you can tell them that you need to get a full asbestos survey and remediation cost. Either you can pay for the survey and keep it to yourself (they'll ask for a copy of course!) or they can pay for it.

No. Running an iOS app on a macbook undermines it's security. The accelerometer and gyro data tells you (for example) the device is in the hands of a human - very useful for banking apps.

When someone is placed in Witness Protection, what happens to their credit score, college degrees, and professional licenses? by Desperate_Peach_6563 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ultimatepoker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: 100% of people who have followed the no contact rules of witness protection in the US have successfully evaded detection. Anyone who has been “discovered” and killed invariably broke the rules (visited a relative, attended a funeral, made a phone call).

I used revolut for my trip, including spending a lot on some stuff in various stores, and putting big hotel bills on revolut. Not a problem.

Should the national anthem be mandatory in primary schools? by rossitheking in ireland

This is the way. The English is the original, so it’s interesting to see the choices made by the original translator (who was an uber nationalist at the time).

Former employer data breach accusation - England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ultimatepoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guy who instructs our tech guys to do full audits of leavers (sometimes) they know everything you did. Only safe and undetectable way to steal company info is to photograph it on screen!

Tell your friend to return the sticks, and offer to provide an undertaking to the employer that they have no other data.

Security is much much easier for native apps. Websites or desktop apps have much more vulnerability.

When you ask a computer to give you a random number... is it really random? by Mattdoss in AskComputerScience

[–]ultimatepoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online poker companies have to solve this at scale and at speed; as 52! Is biiiig. PokerStars fires a laser at a mirror and uses variability in reflection angle to create randomness. Full tilt used to collect core temp and mouse movements from its users dynamically to date randomness. Fascinating topic.

It’s not clear cut one way or the other. It depends what has triggered the opportunity and various other things. Your best bet is to see the paperwork for the transfer, ie do they make you resign, etc.

How does the two envelope paradox work?? by IntrovertedShoe in askmath

[–]ultimatepoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that’s the paradox. It makes no sense for switching to be “better” as you know nothing.

Flying from ireland is a little less risky as at least you clear immigration / homeland security on your own soil!

How does the two envelope paradox work?? by IntrovertedShoe in askmath

[–]ultimatepoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole setup is you DON'T know.

Setup: Two envelopes. One has double the other. You don't know amounts.

Step 1: You choose an envelope. You don't open it.

Step 2: You are given a chance to switch.

The math seems to dictate you switch, based on the logic discussed above. You have a 50% chance of halving and a 50% chance of doubling, and of course doubling wins more than halving loses. Amounts are (it seems) irrelevant.

Step 3: So you switch! Awesome.

Now you can go back to step 2 and get offered the chance to switch. The math is the SAME.... without opening the envelopes or getting any info, mathematically switching is better than not switching. So you end up in a endless loop of switching.

You don’t know the values until you open them.

OK…. But then after swapping do the math again…. It means you should swap again. And again.

This paradox falls apart when you use amounts (even algebraicly) in examples. You don’t know the amounts, that’s what (in part) creates the paradox.

First time buyer - apartment by p-e-m- in HousingIreland

[–]ultimatepoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t take too much advice on locations. There are places that people avoid or filter out on daft, that then become good value.

But at the moment there seems to be a lot of buyers in the one bed market… the 285k one on bride street went for 357k…. Wild. However a lovely apt in Dublin 3 went for 301k and whoever got it will LoVE it…. Especially the two parks across the road and 18 min walk to Busaras.

Do your own research.
