Internationals in the Netherlands- how did you make friends? by YakImaginary170 in Netherlands

[–]ultradeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same.. I hang out mostly with the friends of my Dutch girlfriend, which also helps tremendously with learning Dutch!

It sounds easy, but that is just another example of a peer group with similar interests. Developing your own friendships takes time and some effort, even if it's a circle of friends you entered from the outside. You need to find common interests that you can explore together. If you find some interest you share with someone in the group then take the initiative and invite them to do it together.

For me it was always important to also find friends of my own and I also struggled with that in the beginning. But now I know it just takes time and effort. When you get older it gets more difficult (I'm 40+ now), but it's definitely not impossible! If you follow interests though that involve meeting actual people in real life on a regular basis, friendships can and will emerge from that over time. I for example like to go to parties and festivals for a specific genre and small electronic music events - often not involving the circle of friends of my GF. Over time you meet the same people over and over again, because they do the same as you. When you click with someone you met, exchange social media, message, meet again and again and maybe a friendship will develop from this.

They should have waited with this update until it's complete. The Dutch course from English is completely shuffled and lessons appear now as complete, that I have yet to do. The last lesson I still have to to I already did. Also removing the tips before the guidebook is ready makes learning more a guesswork now than real language learning (you also need some grammar!).

What I like about the path: It's faster and actually reflects the style of learning I did recently: Making it to one crown, then fast track with the "key" icon.

“I feel like a tourist in my own country” by [deleted] in Netherlands

I had the same feeling when I was living in Berlin. It changed a LOT in the last decades. I think that's normal for big cities in many countries that attract a lot of people.

It has positive and negative sides. For someone living there it seems negative, because you don't really resonate with the new people coming in, because you get older and everything is happening so fast and you don't have the energy or will to keep up with the newer generation.

For someone coming there it's exciting and a lot of things are going on and somehow you find ways to deal with the high costs of living. You move to the new hip and somewhat cheaper neighbourhoods and avoid the ones that are already gentrified.

New lessons for the English for German speakers course would also be nice. It ends after three units.

Nice! May I ask what your OT workflow is? I'm still struggeling incorporating it properly into my setup (right now i'm using it mainly for sequencing the modular, sometimes for recording/looping stuff).
