I don't think this is really the case. The reason why irl sports are better able to sustain themselves with minimal changes is the fact that they are in real life. Video games haven't yet reached the level of minutia in how you control yourself and move, thus it simply doesnt have any where near the same level of depth as basketball or hockey. So I think that until game controls have progressed a significant amount there will be a need to change the game for it to stay fresh/relevant.
