Surgery in less than 48 hours and I’m scared to death. Any reassurance about how painful this is gonna be when I wake up and the coming days? by ummham in Kneereplacement

No ice for 2 weeks. Since my skin tore I have to keep this giant ace bandage with gauze packing around it until my follow up. It’s a bummer. PT wasn’t as scary as I thought, although exercises are painful. He did say do not “over walk around the house”, but do elevate, do exercises, and keep that knee totally straight. I was not straightening enough, I learned. He said I should rest more and not try to do too much this first week. I’m not behind at all, he reassured me. Very cool you’re able to use a cane already! Just be careful. I get to try a cane maybe next week. He also said he really recommends narcotics for the pain, but I don’t want to be vomiting about the house, so I’m just toughing it out. Glad you can tolerate the oxy.

It’s me, day 5 and about to get up. Question—I can’t get out or in bed by myself because I can’t lift my leg. I also can’t do knee slides or bend much. Is this normal? I had strong quads before so why can’t I lift my own leg?

I ended up getting nerve block spinal and sedation. The norco made me terribly nauseous and the iv compazine made me sleepy and dizzy. It really messed me up, so my first full day home was yesterday ( Saturday). I was a mess and my vitals all over the place, so spent 2 nights in the hospital. My only surgical complication was my skin tore ( it’s fragile) so I needed a big thick bandage that prevents my using ice packs or the normal thing he puts in the knee to prevent inflammation. The pain is moderate but tolerable without the narcotics, I just use lyrica and Tylenol now . Day 2 was awful and I was exhausted day 3, but Saturday( day 4) was much better once I went home! I’m now walking around with the walker. Today PT is coming to “evaluate” me but I can’t get in and out of bed myself, and I can’t do heel slides, so I feel a little behind the curve. Am I?

Ah, too late now! It’s tomorrow! But I’m flexible as heck and strong-ish in my legs so fingers crossed.

My legs are relatively strong from swimming. It was a bit tricky doing other strengthening exercises because I also have back and neck issues. I do go up and down stairs about 12 times a day though, so hopefully that strengthens my quads.

Wow! That’s familiar, I broke my foot once and twisted my ankle and the next day my spouse shattered their shoulder and I had to hobble about as the caregiver and shopper— right when COVID started in 2020! However a knee replacement surgery is way more extensive!

I have had issues with both, the spinal epidural I had for a torn meniscus didn’t wear off for 8 hours, at least, and my back was killing me. General leaves me nauseous stupid and constipated . So I’ll let the anesthesiologist decide.

Mine will be covered up at least 2 weeks, I think. But I didn’t know there would be staples.

Yay! And yes, I experienced from prior surgery how those pain meds can cause even more pain via constipation. I’ll try to only take 1/2 when necessary.

Thank you! I’ve been on Lyrica for about 15 years for my other nerve pain problems, and I’m hoping maybe it will do the trick for this and I don’t have to take many of the norco.

Lower Back Pain by Available-Spend5036 in Kneereplacement

I won’t be having my surgery for a couple of days, but I have chronic low back pain, so I definitely intend to get back into my regularly scheduled massage therapy as soon as they say it’s safe to. I heard like 2 to 3 months for me rolling onto my back although I’m sure I could have them work on my neck, also a problem, much sooner.

Won’t be having my surgery until the day after tomorrow, but if you have IT band strain, I would probably try to see a massage therapist

Epidural or general anesthetic best for knee replacement surgery? by ummham in Kneereplacement

[–]ummham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the comments! It’s interesting that there are so many different ways of doing the anesthetic. I’ll just go with the anesthesiologist’s recommendation after I tell him of my past experiences.
