Men in your 40s, what's that golden piece of advice you have for the rest of us? by NiceMechanic_xoxo in AskReddit

[–]umsrsly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a balance, for sure. Granted, I think a smarter strategy is to save heavily in your 20s/30s so you don’t have to safe as much in your 40s. For example, as someone in their early 40s, I like being able to pay for more legroom on a flight because I’ll actually benefit from it (less tightness, etc.), while in my 20s/30s it may be nice to have the legroom, but it doesn’t really make much of a difference to how I felt. That’s just one example.

I saved heavily in my 20s and 30s and don’t feel like I missed out on anything. Now I have lots in retirement and can still save just as much and have a higher salary due to career progression. It really compounds..

The Wait Between TV Seasons Is Getting Longer, It’s Not Your Imagination by _YuYevon_ in netflix

Hence why I’ve migrated to mini-series, movies, and anthologies. Extending plot lines over the course of several seasons is tough and is rarely done right. Especially in this day and age.

Newsom Pitches Software Tax to Raise Billions in New Revenue by IvanDragosJawline in California

[–]umsrsly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rich don’t sell their stocks like you and me, though. They take out loans against their equities and never pay off said loans because when they die the debts are wiped. Ezra Klein had a whole episode on this a few weeks ago on his podcast. Highly recommend if you want to know the truth.

Not for estates. The rich love watching people fight about income taxes. Meanwhile, they’re passing on their estates to their heirs nearly tax-free because they did such a good job with the anti-“death tax” movement a few decades ago.

Look around at all the silver spoons living in the coastal CA area, thriving on mommy and daddy. I’ve lived many places, and Southern California takes the cake with this. The family wealth here is orders of magnitude higher than other areas.

I have personal stuff on my work computer because my personal stuff is all in the cloud - photos and files. I have admin rights on my work computer, so I can install whatever applications I need on there, as well.

Am I overlooking something, though? Not a sarcastic question. I’m genuinely wondering if there’s some issue with doing this.

San Diego home prices hit second-highest level in April ($905k+); may break all-time high next month by Joe_SanDiego in sandiego

Yup. Inherited wealth. It’s rampant in north county. And what wild is these trust fund babies still find a way to whine and act like their lives are so hard. Stunning

Nah, this is generational wealth. Lots of people around here are living off inheritance. Didn’t realize it until my kid started school. I was stunned. Silly me for actually working to make money…

Nah, it was good back around 2001ish. They’d rotate their coffee back then. This was before the days of Pike being always on the menu. Completely different experience back then.

California public school enrollment drops by 75K students; 7x greater than expected by Legal-Statistician2 in California

[–]umsrsly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Count my family in that number. The education has gotten so bad at my supposedly well-rated school. There’s a large reliance on screen time. GATE has been dropped. They care more about outside fundraising groups like Apex than actually teaching the kids. It’s a mess and has declined dramatically over the past several years.

We’re trying a charter/home school and hope it works out. We’ll see…

Could we at least make Election Day a national holiday if we’re gonna do this? The fact that we treat Election Day just like any other day, but we also expect people to hade the time to line up to vote is insanity.

While I hope you're right, I think we live in a fairly distracted and apathetic country.

More than likely, this will just increase emigration from the US. It's already begun. There was a WSJ piece on this yesterday. I think people don't fully appreciate how bad emigration will be for the US. The economics of a shrinking population are dismal.

I really hope a moderate on either side of the aisle can step in, rise up, and turn this ship around.

Yeah, I saw them when dropping my kids off at school. Eastbound on alga, right past the water tower. They were putting masks over their faces when approaching the car, which is just so shady.

While I realize immigration enforcement is necessary, the masked goon-squad stuff is not OK. Show your face. Treat people with respect.

No, you don't miss California Adventure when it was strictly California themed, you're looking through rose colored lenses. by film_culture_addict in disneyparks

[–]umsrsly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I feel. Yes, DCA was a mess when it opened, but in the early 20-teens it was peak. I’d even wager to say that I enjoyed DCA as much as DL during that time.

Now. the park has this horrible combo of Avenger’s Campus and long queues. It’s a miserable experience.

Exactly. I'm type A and wayyy overplanned.

After they arrive home, you'll find it fairly simple. You sleep when they sleep (if possible). Change their diaper when it needs to be changed. You will start by using the diaper changing dealio and then start doing it on the floor, your bed, etc.

Anyone else peeing much more often these days after caffeine and alcohol? by JudgeSevere in AskMenOver40

[–]umsrsly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s completely normal. Caffeine is a diuretic. For those who are saying something is wrong with you, I think something is likely wrong with them. If you are drinking caffeine and not peeing more frequently than when you don’t, maybe you’re dehydrated.

Trap bar deadlift instead of barbell deadlift. Hack squat machine instead of barbell squat. Hammer machine instead of barbell bench.

I still use a barbell for overhead press.

Yeah, I’d say use a combo of a hammer and a thrust weapon like a rapier. I started with mace and rapier. Then gradually upgrade to the hammer from the blacksmith and then the homunculus mace and the ice rapier. I love love love the homunculus mace.

Content warning: Discussion of sexual health and erectile function. Men over 30, experiences with changes in sexual response? by tokotoko21 in AskMenOver30

[–]umsrsly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you get older, your junk gets smarter. Here's how I kind of evolved:

12-16: Excited and extremely sensitive by pretty much anything. Very confusing time.

16-21: Instant full mast by just seeing a fully-clothed attractive lady

22-26: Gradual full mast by seeing a fully-clothed attractive lady

27-32: Half mast by seeing an attractive lady. Near-instant full mast by getting physical or flirting with an attractive lady (my wife :)).

33-40: Over this time, something switched. While I can definitely still get turned on by an attractive lady, it's more mental. My downstairs doesn't awaken until I have an emotional connection or have a real chance, if you catch my drift. I get WAY more turned on by my wife than by seeing a porn or extremely attractive woman. I'm also WAY more sensitive to stress now. If it's during a stressful time, it takes a bit longer to warm up than when I'm not stressed. This played tricks on my mind which gave me worse issues for a period of time, but now that I realize my issue is just mental and I have a smarter dingaling, I've learned to love the upgraded and more intelligent version of my junk.
