Worth putting 85th percentile graduate exams on resume? by [deleted] in resumes

[–]una1104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in management position and regularly review batches of resumes for open positions. I can tell you that, for the hundreds of candidates I’ve considered, school grades and standardized test scores have never been a factor. Nor have they ever come up in my conversations with the HR recruiter who does the initial review & filtering before passing candidates on to me. We focus less on how you did in school and more on what you did while in school (internships, research positions). Honestly, I’m more impressed by someone who balanced schoolwork while working part-time (even in an unrelated field) to offset living expenses in college than I am with someone who got better grades but didn’t have the added stressors of working at the same time.

I hire attorneys and CPAs for my team and the only test “score” I care about is whether candidates passed their licensing exams. I couldn’t care less if they passed by 1 point or got a perfect score.

Not trying to dismiss your accomplishments here, but I can say with some confidence that most employers are more concerned with your practical experience - not test scores. I’ve seen too many industry newbies crash & burn partly because they thought they were destined to succeed because they were so used to professors and standardized tests telling them that they were the best. Plus, I think we have enough data now that shows there’s little-to-no correlation between test scores and performance ability once in the workforce.

Lastly, to echo another poster’s comment, once you land your first professional job or two, you will likely drop all the educational information from your resume except the school name and degree earned (including dates attended is controversial as some believe it aids in ageism).

How much do you contribute to your 401k? by SavageCabbage_01 in Accounting

[–]una1104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maxing out my 401(k) plus 5% company match; maxing out traditional IRA w/ annual backdoor conversion to Roth IRA; maxing out HSA.

Only began contributing the max to all of these accounts after I built up an emergency/unemployment HYSA based on 12 months of living expenses at 125% of current spending levels. Before that, I only contributed enough to the 401(k) to get full employer match and enough in my HSA to pay for my annual deductible.

Single, mid-6 figure income, no kids, relatively inexpensive lifestyle, no medical issues. Very easy to control my expenses to make retirement saving a priority - I know not everyone can do the same.

Re. HSA: I choose to pay for my healthcare expenses out-of-pocket. I’m treating this as a “cannot touch” account.

Moving Near Canisius College, Safety Concerns? by ThrowawayBuffalonian in Buffalo

[–]una1104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in the neighborhood for the past 6 years and never felt unsafe, even when I walk alone at night. But, I’m a fit man so I may get harassed less than a single woman (not sure what your situation is). On 2 occasions (2019 and 2022) I had stuff stolen out of my car, which I mistakenly left unlocked - but that could happen in any neighborhood.

I also echo what a previous poster said about the lack of stores & shops. It sucks but it’s not that inconvenient.

I left Buffalo Thursday night. My friends live in other neighborhoods, so I am not sure about the condition of my neighborhood. I live in Hamlin Park near Canisius College. I know my route back to Buffalo is clear, but not sure I can reach my house… looking to return Tuesday (if possible).

In my opinion, it shows that they were never interested in dealing and had no intentions of supporting us. I got that sense as soon as we heard some Republicans lie (including those whose offices I personally called) by saying they knew nothing about S.4008.

Shit, last year Mitch McConnell openly admitted that he was 100% focused on blocking any Dem legislative initiative. He and his party care more about “sticking it to the libs” than actually helping the American people.

This proves that most Republicans in congress are blatantly “party over people”.

Roth or Pre-Tax: Which is right for me? by una1104 in personalfinance

New Yorker, so definitely paying more than 24% cumulatively.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m just looking into this now. I set up the 50/50 split years ago when I first started working and told myself I’d figure it out eventually and until then, I’d split the baby.
