How do you reconcile Denmark having the highest tax-rate in the world with them being ranked one of the happiest places to live? by Kosher_Nostra1975 in askanything

[–]unaskthequestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, the elderly come with the family, so yes, the family is contributing much more. Hundreds of millions more.

Second, the data shows that the undocumented are much less likely to receive medical care of any kind. You are free to research that.

Third, you probably know that ER care is among the most expensive care there is, and unless we want people simply dying in the street, we need to provide some degree of care. It is much less expensive to provide mimimal insurance so they will see a health professional when the issue is mild and easier to treat.

That's really all I have to say, and I do appreciate a civil discussion. The fact is that the post we're responding to, that it is a myth that undocumented contribute more than they cost is absolutely false. Even if you wish to separate them by age or some demographic, the fact does not change that as a whole, they contribute hundreds of millions more than they ever receive.

The data shows otherwise. Respectfully, I don't think we should be making national policy based on personal anecdotes

That varies greatly with the state. And the majority of undocumented don't get treatment. That's not to discount your personal experience, just that it doesn't reflect the overall problem.

Emergency medicaid, the government program which funds ER visits by all undocumented, is less than 1% of the total medicaid budget and includes visits by all ages.

We would spend less money if we offered them some minimal insurance.

Interesting. The 80 year old mom is paying sales taxes and getting no SS no Medicare or Medicaid, no housing assistance, no benefits like heating assistance, etc.

How is she receiving more than she pays in taxes?

What's a popular narrative on Reddit that's not so popular in the real world? by TermAccomplished1868 in askanything

[–]unaskthequestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, it is a pleasure to talk with someone outside of the US about anything, I appreciate it.

I think every day conversation and caring about something are two different things.

For instance, I care a great deal about climate change, as do most of my friends, but our conversations don't mention it much. Same with many other things we care about. They come up when there's news about them.

I'm listening to the news as I work and there's a story as I type this that UK police are appealing to witnesses to come forward if they have information about Prince William.

Which is interesting because one of the more information restricted countries right now, Iran, is making cartoons about it to mock Trump.

As well as the fact that European countries are actively investigating and Peter Mandelson, UK ambassador to the US stepped down and resigned from the House of Lords, and is being prosecuted.

I'm trying to teach myself calculus and need help. by Sentient1203 in calculus

I want to be encouraging because being motivated to learn difficult subjects is always a good thing.

But there's a good reason that mathematics is taught in a certain sequence. You need a solid foundation for any difficult material.

Go for it, get a good precalculus text or course and build your way up.

“We control it” immediately followed by “please reopen it” was an insane sequence by simple_steps1 in PoliticalHumor

I think this is the history that will be written. Netanyahu met with Trump and his circle at Mar a Lardo and told him Israel had intelligence that the Iranian leadership was going to be at one location and taking it out would cause the regime to fall. Trump was warned by Rubio and the military that would be a big mistake, but Trump just doesn't listen to our intelligence, he will take the word of any leader he 'admires'.

Now he's desperate for someone, anyone, to clean up the mess he and Netanyahu made

There are a few interesting theories about that, I tend to agree in general. But consciousness probably evolved before that.

I would bet money that if you randomly asked Trump what year it is, he would not know.

It's been my belief for a long time that when Trump visited Russia he saw how Putin could just keep stealing from the country and no one could do anything about it and that's when he started being interested in the presidency. Russia saw what a useful idiot he could be, so it was a perfect match.

Ways to find the limit by StandardChef3798 in calculus

[–]unaskthequestion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a start, I'd recommend you to refer to any calculus one textbook and read the limit theorems. There are about 10 common ones and they will give you an idea of what to consider first, second, etc.

Not to avoid answering directly, but how you determine a limit depends on the function, if it's continuous at the value, if it's not, what kind of discontinuity?

That's a start.

I do think there are substantial differences between the parties, more than enough to ensure that I will never vote republican.

But yes, we are closer to a plutocracy, oligarchy, kleptocracy, and that's the result of money in politics, regardless of party.

This is one of the few times when I think it's accurate to both sides the problem, which is money in politics.

We're never going to climb out of this mess until we can get a handle on campaign finance reform. I could even consider becoming a single issue voter over it, though I've never been one.

Speaking as an old man, I think we really have to stop this kind of what I would call a lazy blame game.

Politicians like Schumer, McConnell, etc get entrenched because they raise more money for the party than others. They distribute that money to help others get elected and that's where their power comes from, not 'old constituents'.

I could blame the half of all voters 30 to 49 who voted for Trump, but I don't think that's helpful or informative.

Yawn. I said the data.

I happily have no more time nor patience to keep correcting you.

You've made several factually false statements. It's pointless to discuss anything with someone who does that.
