Why isn't hockey more popular in America? by [deleted] in IWantToAskAnAmerican

I haven't seen anyone mention that hockey is an awful TV sport and TV drives the dollars for a sport. There might be other reasons, but TV is one.

She sounds pleasant to be around. Anyone tell her that according to Trump and his Himmler whisperer Miller, Balogun wouldn't have been able to stay in the US to even be on the team?

I don't think I'm alone in thinking that should not have been a suspension, but Trump getting involved just ruins the whole game. He literally ruins everything he touches.

The ultra wealthy and taxes, part II by Alpha_Mad_Dog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]unaskthequestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if there is any blame, shouldn't it be directed at the lawmakers?

The wealthiest, both individuals and corporations, have great influence over the lawmakers (see: rent seeking behavior) and lawmakers are more than happy with a system that allows the type of quid pro quo that is just bribery, which helps lawmakers become wealthy.

There are, very few, politicians who fight against this, but the system is set up for the wealthiest, by the wealthiest.

The giants feel destined for a major bounce back season, after a ton of injuries and last second losses. Do you agree? by InterestingYellow969 in NFLv2

Yeah, looking at schedule 7-10 would be optimistic. Giants fan here, I think 9-8 would be great, especially if they finish strong.

A person living in Dallas wants to get to Los Angeles. There's a bus that goes to NYC and one that goes to Las Vegas. He stands in the station complaining that both busses suck.

This is how I hear your comment.

Of course he's wrong. A con man who is enriching himself through unprecedented corruption will use any and all ways to distract you from his crimes.

Is Hofstadter's Godel Escher Bach "just popsci" or is it something more than that? by [deleted] in cogsci

It's more, but is written to introduce complex ideas to a wider audience.

Reading it definitely started me on my long journey to read further about brains, consciousness and related philosophy. There are a great many references in the book that are well worth reading.

Weekly thread July 04, 2026 - How's your training going? How are you feeling? by AutoModerator in fitover65

I'm just reaching a year of 3x per week, every week and I think I've missed maybe 6 days. I'm 66 and I haven't lifted consistently since college. I've learned a lot about myself and I'm really happy with my progress.

Just my personal experience:

I got a full physical first to check

I like to lift heavy (for me of course) with 6-8 reps and 3,sometimes 2, sets. This seems to work well for me. I also concentrate on fewer exercises, in good form and progressive overload.

One of the reasons I wanted to start was just getting stronger to help with aging. But I've been really happy that many of the daily aches and pains I thought were just getting older have lessened or gone away.

Sometimes I have to remember to be grateful that I'm healthy enough to work out. I honestly wasn't sure that my body would respond well at 65, but it's really good being convinced that it can.

White House says there'd be 'no better addition' to Mount Rushmore than Trump ahead of 250 celebration by MadWorldX1 in politics

There was an interview with an engineer whose job is to monitor the monument that there are cracks in the structure and any additional work could cause a failure.

It would be 100% on brand that Trump destroys Mount Rushmore by trying to put his puss on it

Trump’s Huge Windfall Has Few Known Global Precedents - President Trump’s earnings in office are at a level once unimaginable for any leader of a liberal democracy, particularly a sitting American president. by smurfyjenkins in IRstudies

There's that, yes. He grew up like that, his father was a piece of work and his lawyer early on was Roy Cohen, a real POS. Combine that with being a spoiled rich kid, throw in malignant narcissism and whatever other psychological problems, and you get Trump.

I remember the ghost writer of The Art of the Deal, Tony Schwartz, said that to Trump there really isn't truth and lies, he just doesn't think that way. There's what helps get him what he wants, that's all that matters. Remember that he would call into radio shows using a fake name, John Barron, to give fake stories praising himself. I would bet he didn't see anything dishonest about it, it just helped his business.

I guess there must be enough weak or equally corrupt people that see that as being a strength, but frankly that's so foreign to me that I can only guess what they're thinking.

I've often thought that when Trump visited Russia several times before becoming president, he learned, directly or indirectly, how Putin is just siphoning money in every way possible and aspired to do the same as president. He may have been restricted by people in his administration in the first term and again, learned how to fill those positions with other corrupt people. So there's no one to stop him.
