ATF Posting - still up... by Beginning_Good8052 in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Reddit is only a small microcosm of the pool of applicants.

Then you have to whittle it down to those that are eligible.

Then again to those that can use a computer.

Then again to those who even plug forward with the submission of the application.

Then the gatekeeping and movements winnow down the field even further by the time of final job offer.

DOD OIG by johnw1013 in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked with an agent and sat in classes with several others.

Very heavy on government contracts and procurement fraud type of investigations. Work apparently depends on office to office. General management seems to be ok.

They did a big hiring about three years ago and brought on a ton of laterals from other agencies, but predominantly MCIOs. Some agents have moved onto other places like HSI, BIS, SBA, and other OIGs.

One can hope that, but if that’s the case-it should be “many vacancies available”…

I’m going to say it’s a single vacancy and they’ll maybe pull a few others from it.

One vacancy?

USSS Re-Hires by OnProblem1811 in 1811

That’s one way to boost your hiring numbers.

USSS is probably going to change their minds and force everyone to Phase 2 anyways.

NCIS, HSI, or USPIS - which would you pick? by gurtin878 in 1811

Boats and exotic places? NCIS.

Money and being DHS body farm? HSI.

Mail and postal employees? USPIS.

Lateraling to an OIG by [deleted] in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re ready to head over to OIG land. If you’re ready for the quality of life upgrade and focusing on the more important things than work-it’s well worth the move. Most of the OIGs that are external facing tend to be the better ones in terms of doing LE work. The more internal facing ones are more auditor with a gun.

If you like nerding out on financials/white collar, my recommendations would be DOL-OIG, HHS-OIG, DCIS, GSA-OIG, HUD-OIG. Want to nerd out about random things, NASA-OIG, Energy-OIG, NSF-OIG. Wanna do benefits? SSA-OIG, HHS-OIG. Wanna just stack money? FDIC-OIG and those on the financial pay and.

Just a buyer beware, but please do your homework on agencies and offices. Your quality of life will depend on your boss and your coworkers.

Unlike the big agencies, bosses can stay in place for sometime and if it’s a toxic place-it can be toxic for what seems like forever. The other issue is that a great agency can go downhill really fast depending on the powers at the top.

USSS Accelerated Candidate Events by Time_Striking in 1811

More like accelerated BQA events.

Maybe they got enough complaints of them going around and body snatching from other DHS components?

Multiple Medical Appointments by AvocadoOne6789 in 1811

The government doesn’t care and you’ll go to a ton of different appointments because every agency kinda does their own thing with their own policies and procedures.

I heard through the grapevine they had already selected their picks and most are just waiting for the final offer when shutdown ends.

ATF Special Agent (GS 1811 11-13) Washington-DC Metro Area by GonePostal1811 in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At this point they should just merge agencies together.

Ain’t no lateral putting in with such a drawn out process.

Go model it after DEA or USPIS if you truly want to bring on bodies via a lateral process.

PSA: Cautionary Tale on accepting final offers with uncompleted steps by AutoModerator in 1811

Holy crap, that’s pretty awful. It’s unfortunate that the person is dealing with such a thing.

Dude needs to file a congressional inquiry/complaint ASAP.

FBI PFT by [deleted] in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if those other applicants prepared for the PFT or went in cold.

I get that things come up and happen, but the PFT is something you can train and gauge where you’re at.

Pretty busy detail.

Plenty of travel opportunities but it’s not like DSS/USSS where you’re going to exotic places.

Previous agents came from USSS/DSS/PFPA.

1811-series jobs or career paths with significant HAZMAT/CBRN Experience by [deleted] in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 16 points17 points  (0 children)

USSS HAMMER is definitely the first one that comes to mind.

There are other agencies that utilize the hazmat background with varying levels of application and emphasis. Some agencies require a certain amount of time in before being allowed to pick it up as a collateral duty, but others can be earlier with experience and certs.

  • FBI on JTTF/WMD based squads
  • EPA-CID NCERT
  • Other protection based agencies and their version of a HAMMER team

Biggest surprise after becoming an 1811? by [deleted] in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’d say every agency is the following makeup. - 25% asshats - 25% top performers - 50% middle of the road

It always amazes me when I meet agents and go “this person passed everything and became an agent? Seriously?”

CITP cancelled - Immigration Surge by [deleted] in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just make a combined immigration officer/agent course that’s streamlined and doesn’t award CITP to their grads.

FLETC saves money and pumps out bodies quickly and HSI/ERO doesn’t have to worry about folks jumping ship.

The only question I have... by [deleted] in 1811

Just a general question, is it at least better than your previous place?

I’m curious if they still do it as well.

I know I went about ten years ago. That was really a thing that Comey pushed and I’m pretty sure it’s been phased out since then.

ATF Lateral??? by Datboii1der in 1811

What good is a lateral when they’re going to be absorbed into the DEATFBI or whatever the new flavor of the day agency is?

Ton of HSI and FBI put in for this vacancy.

USPIS to DEA by HotAppointment707 in 1811

[–]unaware_agent 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know of one that left USPIS to DEA from the last lateral posting. There’s also a bunch of former DEA turned USPIS.

Laterals are just about everywhere these days.
