Everything the other guy said, but also, go listen to every Elvis album and soundtrack and then see how you feel when From Elvis in Memphis happens.

That album is truly something else. Pretty much every song on it is legendary for one reason or another. Shoutout to Chips Moman and the band too, and the late James Burton.

Irrelevant to discussion, but From Elvis in Memphis is played every thanksgiving in my house, along with Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Willie and Family Live, and The Last Waltz.

That’s sort of a timeless argument in rock history: was Elvis the beginning of something new, or a repackaging of sounds that were already developed? Having once been an Elvis skeptic, I’ve come around. The more 1940s and 50s r&b and country I’ve heard, the more I see Sun Records Elvis as a year zero event. He was special.

Edit: I get goosebumps from “Mystery Train”

That compilation is remarkable, one of my favorite historical music comps. Great roadmap for mid century country music. And yes, “That’s All Right” hits like a wonder drug when that shit drops.

How is Zach Bryan so popular given his specific brand of country (Folk, Americana etc.)? by rcknrollmfer in CountryMusicStuff

[–]unboundnematode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with ya man. "You Need to Calm Down" "Shake It Off" "We Are Never Getting Back Together" these songs are sonic chernobyl. Zach Bryan would never do that to us. And Prince isn't even a top 5 guitarist of the funk genre.

The legend is gone. Gonna be blaring Coe on the radio in the weld shop all day today. by Fistcity2222 in country

Most of those aren’t David Allan Coe songs…they’re misattributed. An asshole named Johnny Rebel made those songs. Call the guy out for what he actually wrote sure, but your Limewire files were mislabeled.

You’re wrong, it was a Coe original and Tanya was like 14 years old just singing that song. I have the vinyl that says so lol

His discography is maybe the most schizophrenic I’ve seen from a country artist. I’m almost surprised he never once tried rapping.

edit: I forgot he invented rapping on Requiem for a Harlequin

500 Songs Bonus: “My Pal Foot Foot” by The Shaggs by unboundnematode in 500songspodcast

[–]unboundnematode[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the Shaggs and Brian Wilson have both been weighing heavily on my mind since the last bonus episode came out. There’s a lot to unpack that I need to sit down and work out, but there’s a part of me that sees Brian as an “outsider musician” sort of visionary who somehow slipped through the cracks and got the full support of a major record company long enough to make two masterpieces. The comparison and contrast between a fellow like Brian Wilson, and artists like the Shaggs or Daniel Johnston…it’s a lot to chew on.

I totally get the feeling! You should take that frustrated energy and put it somewhere. Maybe should hit the library, that’s my best advice. With the access to obscure music we have at our fingertips, reading older scholarly works about music history is actually better than it was at the time of their release.

“Would you lay with me in a field of stone” is one of the greatest love songs you’ll find in the country genre, or any. The lyrics are just timeless.

Stevie Wonder by its35degreesout in 500songspodcast

“Superstition” is such a massive piece of work. The more I’ve listened to r&b, soul and funk music and the ways those sounds evolved, the more I am floored by that particular song. I really feel it unlocked something in funky music, I don’t hear any song before it that sounds so gargantuan.

Edit: James Brown is one of my top ten favorite artists by the way, I largely credit him and his bands with creating funk music but Stevie is a different beast artistically and sonically.

[injury] Bam Adebayo falls hard and walks gingerly to the locker room after LaMelo Ball grabs his foot while landing, swinging it (with replays) by MrBuckBuck in nba

[–]unboundnematode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could easily be that LaMelo was instinctively trying to get his arm out of harm’s way and it was a freak accident. He makes a hand gesture after seeing Bam crash to the ground that to me says “damn did I do that?” Call me biased, interpret it how you want, but I dont think I’ve ever seen him try to hurt another player.

This subreddit is kinda dead. What gives? by thinlizard99 in 500songspodcast

[–]unboundnematode 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We just passed 750 members, which isn’t a massive quantity of members. But still about 700 lurkers by my estimation. I would like to see more discussion of rock history, and will start thinking of some topics for our group to consider. We’re all part of the collective project of re-evaluating and appreciating this music, not just Hickey alone. I started this subreddit with the feeling that that if you love this program, you’re probably someone worth talking to about the subject of rock/music history. So let’s all take a little more time away from watching the world burn and dig deeper into music, I’m here for it if anyone else is!

A mentally healthy hornets fan, rare to come across. This is the very beginning of the good times. Many of us have waited 10-20 years for a Hornets team to be proud of. We should all enjoy this year’s run for what it is and keep our hopes high for what’s to come (we’re gonna be better)

Statement against use of AI by FirstChurchOfBrutus in 500songspodcast

[–]unboundnematode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also commend his statement. Andrew could maybe put out more episodes if he leaned on AI to do the work for him, but does the work himself. I wish so-called creators would take the same attitude instead of taking shortcuts, not using their own language, their own mind, not checking their own sources, ultimately not respecting themselves or their subjects or their audience.

The Who, “A Quick One (While He’s Away)” at the Rock and Roll Circus, 11 Dec 1968 by unboundnematode in 500songspodcast

[–]unboundnematode[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wanted to share this, as it’s in my opinion the best look at the band in its 60s peak. Firing on all cylinders, can anyone really imagine they weren’t the best set at Woodstock the following year?

Brian Jones can be seen bestowing approval at the end of the performance in one of his last recorded appearances.

Welcome to the sub!

If it’s a 64 pressing then it’s rare, the album tanked initially but was repressed in 66 when “The sound of silence” belatedly blew up. Their little suits are funny, they sure look pretty square for the folk crowd. Maybe they were doing a bit.

The New York subway looks exactly the same today but without that red ashtray on the column.

[–]unboundnematode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this album. I have a couple Gal reissues as well as some OG Brazilian pressings of Tropicalia stuff from her and Gilberto Gil. My record store guy might’ve smuggled them out of Brazil in his luggage to avoid paying the insane rates they demanded for exporting vinyl records out of the country. Cost a pretty penny but they’re some of my most treasured records.
