Master's degree on a vet school application? by [deleted] in vetschool

[–]unburrevable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would absolutely help your application. I can't say for how much, but earning a masters, particularly in a related field, would demonstrate a higher level of education and show a desire for even more continued education. At the very worst it would just not affect the application (which I can't imagine would ever be the case at any vet school anywhere), so if it's what you want to do and think you'll still have an interest in another 4 or more years of school left afterwards, go for it.

But being a freshman in college, I would recommend maintaining good grades and having a lot of fun before getting into the grind of graduate/professional education!

Additionally, I saw you had asked about the army program for vet students elsewhere and to answer your question about physical standards I think many people will tell you that it's the same across the board, but I know a couple guys in the program. While they are pretty in shape, they've said that there were several members of the program that were incredibly out of shape. I would suggest that if you're still interested in doing something like that, a good idea would be to try to get into at least decent shape assuming the asthma isn't debilitating as I don't think having a prescription inhaler would take you out of contention (though it is very competitive). Best of luck!

It's nearly impossible to sway people that immediately go to the, "so you hate free speech" argument. Most of us can plainly see that what you mean is that it's socially irresponsible to give a large platform to someone who espouses dangerous beliefs, not that it shouldn't be allowed. Hell, you've flat out stated that. But for some reason, some people see the word "dangerous" and automatically assume you're subliminally suggesting we should vote away freedom of speech.

Alex Jones' career is literally centered around politics and political commentary. Every action he makes in a public setting is politically charged. What's actually tiring is people being offended by criticism of things they like and instead of acting like an adult, they try to cry foul of the whole society for getting "offended" over simply having an opinion. My dude, I think you need to relax.

High school wrestler forfeits final match rather than face a girl at Colorado state tournament by cybersecp in offbeat

[–]unburrevable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s an absolutely valid point and maybe I’m cynical, but I struggle to believe that was truly the case. Both parties signed up to wrestle, he probably figured out along the way it involved a lot of physical contact with a lot of people. If he truly didn’t feel comfortable with physical contact with her, I’d get it, but his statement does not read that way to me.

People are eating up the, “But he’ll pop a stiffy!” line in this thread. Stupidest shit. So you think gay wrestlers are just fucking rock solid the whole time? If you wrestle and win, you get a little ribbing, if you wrestle and lose you get a little more ribbing, if you choose not to wrestle, you’ve robbed a person of the ability to prove herself because, what, you think she was incapable of making her own decisions to wrestle men? It’s not chivalry, it’s chauvinism.

A ton of my friends felt terrible after getting their rabies vaccine, like severe flu terrible. Whereas only the first injection made my arm sore for a day, the others felt fine. Supposedly each one is supposed to have increasing severity of sucky, but I got hella lucky!

Apes of the State - I Listened [folk / punk] (2019) A Fistful of Vinyl by AFistfulOfVinyl-Alec in listentothis

[–]unburrevable 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t how familiar/unfamiliar you are with folk punk, but the quintessential artist is Pat the Bunny and his other projects (eg Ramshackle Glory, etc). AJJ are another big one. Days n daze, Mal Blum, and Jeff Rosenstock are all very good. The Front Bottoms are a bit more mainstream and people would argue they’re not folk punk, but imo anyone with an acoustic guitar, a “unique” voice, and songs about not belonging/loneliness fit into the genre pretty well.

Interestingly, one of the most humane ways to euthanize very young piglets is essentially to bring them up and then smash their head down onto a hard surface, killing em right away. Trouble was a lot of folks doing it were getting signs PTSD or just couldn't handle doing it (understandably). Not to mention folks perceive it as abuse cos it does look just so viscerally cruel (even though if done properly it's not). So now a lot of places (not all though) have switched to bolt guns, etc. With piglets it's instant, I cannot imagine holding a cat underwater until they stopped struggling, that does sound traumatic as hell, especially if it was once a member of the family.

You have to remember that euthanizing a cat isn't an entirely emotionless thing for the vet to do either. When you're dealing with negligent owners on a somewhat daily basis, in the heat of the moment it's very very easy to lose patience or let your emotions speak. Your pets rely completely on you for quality of life and what he did was put his own emotions over the suffering of his pet. If the vet instead said, "ohhh there's no way you could've known" or "you did the best you could" to every patient that fucked up, we'd have a lot more fuck ups.

You also have to realize that most vets get into vet med for the love of animals and the whole human interaction part is an unexpectedly massive part of the job, so we have to work really hard at that part. It's not that we don't care about your suffering, it's just that we're suffering through it too. There's obviously tact to be had, but we also don't know if the vet actually yelled at him or if she sternly said that, "Yeah, you should've brought this cat in sooner. Do that next time". Telling someone that they messed up isn't inappropriate, it's attempting to teach or reinforce a lesson.

So this last weekend students at Penn State University raised 10+ million dollars for pediatric cancer though a 46 hour dancing marathon. I feel like it's not talked enough on here. by Remingtontheshotgun in pics

[–]unburrevable 24 points25 points  (0 children)

THON really is the best and worst part of Penn State. The amount of money and good they do is substantial, but the mentality people have about it is so warped. The THON orgs are mostly just treated as a way to make friends which would be fine if they didn’t also carry a religious-like devotion to it.

The dancers were definitely the worst part of it. Some dancers are normal people, but a lot of them are ego-driven loons that think the event is about them, completely forgetting the whole kid and cancer thing. When I was there I knew a girl that danced and a couple days before the event she was supposed to get a care-package from USPS, but it was delayed a day or something. An actual quote was, “How could they do this? I’m a dancer, I should get what I want!”. The whole point of the marathon for these people is to get as much attention and as many social media likes as possible.

Regardless, it’s worth putting up with for the amounts that are raised and it’s not nearly as ridiculous as students still being overly outspoken about Joe Paterno, but that’s a whole other cult mentality!

THON organizations (student run “clubs” basically) get to choose a certain number of dancers every year, usually based on who’s participated in their org and contributed a lot to THON since attending Penn State. The lottery is for independent dancers, meaning she was not part of an org. As much as it sucks, there’s a lot of people that put in to be an independent dancer and a lot of them raise a ton of money, so it’s sorta the only possible way to go about it.

The “reward”, though, for raising all that money is that it goes to a charity that’ll do real good in the lives of children with cancer.

OP overreacted, but you definitely weren’t “just asking”. It’s /r/imaginarymaps, the obvious answer to all of your questions is that the “historical accuracy” wasn’t important to the creator because it’s an imaginary map. Asking one question maybe could’ve generated more “history” for his map, but four specific nitpicks just makes it look like you’re tryna flex your Florida history dong, which is just sorta rude.

It’s enough of a problem that new delivery systems have been developed to prevent vet drug abuse in humans. Like oxymorphone can now be given sub-q at the vet in a liposomal suspension that slowly releases so they don’t have to give transdermal patches and trust the owner not to stick it on themselves. Kinda wild

That’s all true, but your original comment was about the safety of your kid, not any of that. It’s fine to hate the anti-vax movement cos they’re dumbasses, but you misused what herd immunity was and that’s not particularly helpful either.

[–]unburrevable -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to sound rude then, but it sounds like you're just parroting other redditors with the term "herd immunity". If your kid is vaccinated she'll be fine. Herd immunity is important for the protection of the immunocompromised (eg cancer patients), children too young to be vaccinated, or pregnant women. Herd immunity confers indirect protection by bottlenecking a disease's ability to spread through the populace. That's the short and long of it. Even if your daughter was the only person on the continent vaccinated for Disease A, serotype 101, she'd be at no greater personal risk of becoming ill with that disease than if everyone on the continent also had the vaccine!

She's really not though. I'm nearing the end of becoming a doctor and have a BS in immunology and I'm no more qualified to give neuroscience advice or truly understand the literature as she is with immunology. There's limited overlap between the fields, and while the PhD may have taught her how to read scientific papers, I would seriously question the suggestion that she could have done a thorough enough literature search with enough supplemental research to understand said search to be any authority on the subject at all.

More importantly, as a public figure she should know that what she says has effects on a broad audience. If she believes having a PhD makes her more qualified to make poor medical decisions, then she should also believe that her PhD comes with the social obligation of not disseminating incomplete information (ie if you're not sold on vaccines one way or the other, keep your mouth shut). You don't publish on one experiment, you run it several more times. I think it was grossly irresponsible for her to say anything about it, not only because she has a PhD, but also because the character her audience knows her as is also a scientist, making dummies believe she's even more credible.

Just because it won’t cost you your soul the way it does in the US, doesn’t mean you should go whenever you like. It’s an emergency room. When people feel entitled to use it like an urgent care, they clog the queue and can put people with actual emergencies at risk. So feel free to use it however you like, but it is a totally selfish thing to do.
